Parts
- H13/9008 headlight bulb × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket equivalent
Preparation
- Ensure headlights have been off for at least 10 minutes to cool
- Open and secure hood in upright position
- Identify which headlight bulb requires replacement (driver or passenger side)
- Verify replacement bulb is correct H13/9008 type for low/high beam application
Procedure
- 1Remove headlight bezel retaining screwsLocate the four Torx T15 screws securing the chrome headlight bezel ring around the headlight lens. Remove all four screws and carefully pull the bezel away from the fender, being careful not to scratch the paint. Set bezel and screws aside in a safe location.
- 2Remove headlight housing retaining ringWith the bezel removed, locate the black plastic retaining ring that secures the headlight housing to the mounting bucket. Rotate the retaining ring counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it releases from its bayonet-style lock tabs. Pull the ring forward and set aside.
- 3Pull headlight housing forwardCarefully pull the entire headlight housing straight forward out of the mounting bucket approximately 4-6 inches to access the rear of the housing. Do not pull too far or disconnect any wiring yet. Support the housing with one hand to prevent strain on the wiring harness.
- 4Disconnect bulb electrical connectorLocate the H13 bulb electrical connector at the rear of the headlight housing. Press down on the release tab while pulling the connector straight back away from the bulb socket to disconnect it. The connector should separate with moderate force.
- 5Remove bulb retaining collarLocate the wire spring retaining collar that holds the bulb in the reflector housing. Press the collar tab inward toward the center and rotate it counterclockwise to unhook it from the housing. Swing the collar out of the way to release the bulb.
- 6Remove failed bulbCarefully pull the old H13 bulb straight out of the headlight reflector housing. Inspect the bulb base and socket for any signs of corrosion, melting, or damage. If damage is present, the entire headlight housing may require replacement.
- 7Install new bulbPut on nitrile gloves or use a clean cloth to handle the new bulb. Without touching the glass envelope, align the bulb tabs with the slots in the reflector housing and insert the bulb straight in until it seats fully against the housing. Ensure the bulb is fully seated and oriented correctly.
- 8Secure bulb retaining collarSwing the wire spring retaining collar back over the bulb base and rotate it clockwise while pressing outward until it locks into the housing tabs. Verify the collar is fully engaged and the bulb cannot move.
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorPush the H13 electrical connector straight onto the bulb terminals until it clicks and locks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and secured.
- 10Test bulb operationBefore reinstalling the housing, turn the ignition to the ON position and test both low and high beam operation to confirm the new bulb functions correctly. Turn off lights before proceeding.
- 11Reinstall headlight housingCarefully push the headlight housing straight back into the mounting bucket, ensuring the housing seats fully and sits flush with the fender. Align the tabs on the housing with the slots in the bucket.
- 12Install retaining ring and bezelPlace the black plastic retaining ring over the headlight housing and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into the bayonet tabs. Position the chrome bezel over the headlight and install the four Torx T15 screws, tightening them evenly in a cross pattern to avoid distorting the bezel.
Reassembly
- Ensure all four bezel screws are snug but do not overtighten as this may crack the plastic housing
- Verify the headlight housing sits flush with no gaps between the bezel and fender
- Clean headlight lens with glass cleaner if fingerprints or dirt are present
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify low beam operates correctly
- Test high beam operation and verify proper function
- Check that headlight beam pattern is centered and at proper height; adjust if necessary using adjustment screws on rear of housing
- Verify no warning lights appear on instrument cluster
- Visually inspect that bezel is properly seated with even gaps around entire perimeter
