Replace both headlight bulbs on a 2012-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK with 3.6L V6 engine. This procedure involves accessing the headlight assemblies from under the hood without removing the entire housing.

Warnings

Allow headlights to cool for at least 15 minutes before beginning work to prevent burns from hot bulbs
Do not touch the glass envelope of halogen bulbs with bare fingers as oils will cause premature failure and hot spots
ℹ️Headlight aiming may require adjustment after bulb replacement if assemblies are disturbed

Tools required

Nitrile gloves (for handling halogen bulbs)Essential
Flathead screwdriver
Flashlight or work light

Parts

  • H13/9008 headlight bulb × 2 — Mopar 68211320AA or equivalent H13/9008

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off engine
  2. Turn headlight switch to OFF position
  3. Allow headlights to cool if recently used (minimum 15 minutes)
  4. Open and secure hood
  5. Put on nitrile gloves before handling new bulbs

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access driver side headlight assembly
Locate the headlight bulb access cover on the back of the driver side headlight assembly behind the grille area. The circular dust cover is visible from the engine bay looking toward the front of the vehicle near the fender.
  2. 2
Remove driver side bulb dust cover
Rotate the rubber dust cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight back off the headlight housing. Set the dust cover aside in a clean location.
  3. 3
    Disconnect driver side bulb connector
Grasp the electrical connector at the base of the bulb and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself. If connector is tight, gently wiggle while pulling.
  4. 4
Remove driver side bulb retaining ring
Locate the metal wire retaining clip that secures the bulb. Press the spring clip inward toward the bulb and rotate it counterclockwise to release from the locking tabs. Swing the retaining clip out of the way.
  5. 5
    Extract driver side bulb
Pull the H13 bulb straight out of the headlight housing. Note the orientation of the bulb base alignment tabs for installation reference. Inspect the socket for corrosion or damage.
If bulb is broken, carefully remove all glass fragments from housing before installing new bulb
  6. 6
    Install new driver side bulb
Remove new H13 bulb from packaging using gloved hands. Align the three tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight housing and insert the bulb straight in until it seats completely. Ensure bulb is fully seated against the housing.
  7. 7
Secure driver side bulb retaining ring
Swing the wire retaining clip back over the bulb base and rotate clockwise to engage the locking tabs. Ensure the clip fully secures the bulb and prevents it from moving.
  8. 8
    Reconnect driver side bulb connector
Push the electrical connector straight onto the bulb terminals until it clicks into place. Gently tug to verify secure connection.
  9. 9
    Reinstall driver side dust cover
Align the dust cover with the housing and press it on. Rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn to lock it in place. Ensure a complete seal around the perimeter.
  10. 10
    Replace passenger side headlight bulb
Repeat steps 1 through 9 for the passenger side headlight assembly. The passenger side access is similar but may have slightly less clearance due to the air intake system. Work carefully around any nearby components.

Reassembly

  1. Verify both dust covers are fully seated and locked in place
  2. Ensure no tools or parts are left in the engine bay
  3. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
  • Activate headlights and verify both low beams illuminate properly
  • Switch to high beams and verify both high beams function correctly
  • Check that both headlights produce even, bright light output with no flickering
  • If light output appears dim or uneven between sides, verify bulb is fully seated and connector is secure
  • Test headlight aiming on a flat surface or wall and adjust if necessary using headlight aim adjustment screws
