Parts

  • Headlight switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Allow vehicle to sit for at least 2 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
  4. Open driver's door and keep it open throughout procedure for lighting and access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Open hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during switch removal. Loosen the terminal bolt and move cable away from battery post, ensuring it cannot accidentally contact the terminal.
Always disconnect negative terminal first to prevent short circuits
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove lower instrument panel trim
Using a flat blade trim tool, carefully pry the lower instrument panel trim cover from the left side of the steering column. Start at the bottom edge and work around the perimeter. There are multiple plastic retaining clips - use care not to break them. Once clips are released, pull trim panel away from dash.
  3. 3
    Remove knee bolster
Locate and remove the knee bolster panel below the steering column. Remove the Phillips head screws securing the panel (typically 2-3 screws). Gently pull the panel down and away from the dash to release any remaining clips. Set panel aside in a safe location.
  4. 4
    Access headlight switch mounting screws
With the knee bolster removed, you now have access to the back of the instrument panel. Locate the headlight switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. The switch is mounted to a bracket with two screws visible from behind.
  5. 5
    Disconnect electrical connector
Reach behind the instrument panel and locate the electrical connector on the back of the headlight switch. Depress the locking tab on the connector while pulling it straight back away from the switch. If connector is difficult to access, you may need to remove the switch mounting screws first to gain additional clearance.
Do not pull on wires - only pull on the connector body to avoid damaging wiring
  6. 6
    Remove switch mounting screws
Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the two screws securing the headlight switch to the instrument panel bracket. Support the switch with your other hand to prevent it from falling once screws are removed.
    Torque spec
    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove headlight switch assembly
With mounting screws removed and electrical connector disconnected, carefully pull the headlight switch assembly straight out from the instrument panel. Maneuver the switch through the opening, being careful not to scratch surrounding trim or damage the switch shaft.
  8. 8
    Install new headlight switch
Position the new headlight switch assembly into the instrument panel opening. Align the switch shaft with the opening in the trim panel face. Push the switch into position, ensuring it sits flush against the mounting bracket.
  9. 9
    Install mounting screws
Install the two Phillips head mounting screws through the bracket and into the switch assembly. Start both screws by hand to ensure proper thread engagement, then tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can crack the switch housing.

    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the back of the headlight switch until you hear and feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  11. 11
    Reinstall knee bolster
Position the knee bolster panel back into place below the steering column. Align all mounting holes and press firmly to engage any retaining clips. Install the Phillips head screws and tighten securely, but do not overtighten plastic mounting points.
  12. 12
    Reinstall lower instrument panel trim
Align the lower instrument panel trim cover with the dash opening. Starting at one edge, press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Ensure trim is fully seated and gaps are even around all edges.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery negative terminal
Return to the engine compartment and reconnect the negative battery terminal to the battery post. Tighten the terminal bolt to specification using a torque wrench.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim panels are fully seated and all clips are engaged before testing
  2. Verify headlight switch knob rotates smoothly through all positions without binding

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to start)
  • Rotate headlight switch through all positions: OFF, parking lights, and headlights - verify each position functions correctly
  • Test headlight dimmer function if equipped
  • Verify instrument panel illumination adjusts properly with dimmer control
  • Check that dome light override function works if switch is equipped with this feature
  • Re-initialize power windows if necessary by holding each window switch down for 2 seconds after window is fully closed
  • Reset radio presets and clock as needed
