This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the dashboard-mounted speaker(s) in a 2012-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK. The dash speakers are typically located in the upper dashboard near the windshield.
Warnings
⚠Avoid using excessive force on plastic trim pieces as they become brittle with age and UV exposure
ℹ️Some models may have slightly different speaker grille retention methods; inspect before prying

Plastic trim removal tool setEssential
Torx T15 driverEssential
Socket set with ratchet
Flathead screwdriver (wrapped in tape)
Torque wrench (5-20 Nm range)
Parts
- Dash speaker (left or right as needed) × 1 — OEM Mopar or aftermarket 3.5-4 inch speaker
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn ignition off
- Allow dashboard to cool if vehicle has been in direct sunlight (plastic becomes more brittle when hot)
- Identify which dash speaker needs replacement (left or right side of upper dashboard)
- Ensure replacement speaker matches impedance and size specifications (typically 4-ohm, 3.5-4 inch diameter)
Procedure
- 1Access the speaker grilleLocate the speaker grille on the top of the dashboard near the windshield. The grille is a small rectangular or oval cover held by clips. On JK Wranglers, the dash speakers are positioned at the far left and right edges of the upper dash surface.
- 2Remove the speaker grilleUsing a plastic trim removal tool, carefully pry up the speaker grille starting from the rear edge (closest to windshield). Work around the perimeter gently to release the retaining clips. The grille typically has 2-4 clips. Lift the grille away once all clips are released.⚠Apply gentle, even pressure to avoid breaking the grille clips or cracking the dashboard surface
- 3Remove speaker mounting screwsWith the grille removed, you will see the speaker secured by 2-3 Torx screws (typically T15). Remove all mounting screws and set them aside. Note the screw locations if they vary in length.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 4Extract the speakerCarefully lift the speaker upward from the mounting location. There may be limited clearance due to the dashboard structure. Tilt or angle the speaker as needed to clear the opening without forcing it.
- 5Disconnect the speaker connectorLocate the electrical connector on the back of the speaker. Press the release tab (if present) and pull the connector straight off the speaker terminals. Note the polarity orientation if the connector is not keyed.
- 6Prepare the new speakerRemove the new speaker from packaging and verify it matches the original in size and mounting hole pattern. If installing an aftermarket speaker, ensure adapter brackets or harnesses are properly attached before installation.
- 7Connect the new speakerConnect the electrical connector to the new speaker terminals, ensuring correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative). The connector should click into place if equipped with a locking tab. Verify the connection is secure.
- 8Test speaker functionBefore fully securing the speaker, turn the ignition to ACC or ON position and test the speaker by adjusting the audio balance/fade settings to isolate that specific speaker. Verify sound output is clear and proper.
- 9Install the speaker into mounting locationPosition the new speaker into the dashboard opening, ensuring the mounting holes align with the screw bosses in the dash. The speaker should sit flush or slightly recessed. Verify no wires are pinched.
- 10Secure the speaker with mounting screwsInstall the Torx mounting screws through the speaker and into the dashboard mounting points. Tighten screws in a cross pattern to 12.0 Nm (9.0 lb-ft) to ensure even pressure. Do not overtighten as this can crack the plastic mounting bosses.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall the speaker grilleAlign the speaker grille over the speaker opening, matching the clip locations to the receptacles in the dashboard. Press firmly around the perimeter until all clips engage with an audible snap. Ensure the grille sits flush with the dashboard surface.
Reassembly
- Verify the speaker grille is fully seated and does not rattle or have gaps
- Check that no tools or hardware were left in the dashboard cavity
- If both speakers were replaced, verify left/right channels are correctly wired
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON and test audio system through all speakers
- Adjust balance and fade controls to isolate the replaced speaker and confirm clear sound output
- Test at various volume levels to ensure no rattling or distortion from loose mounting
- Verify the speaker grille is secure and does not vibrate during playback
- Inspect the grille alignment and ensure it matches the opposite side aesthetically
