Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind front wheels.
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently driven.
- Relieve fuel system pressure if vehicle has been recently driven to minimize vapor buildup.
- Raise rear of vehicle and support securely on jack stands.
- Remove rear passenger-side wheel for improved access.
Procedure
- 1Access the charcoal canisterThe charcoal canister is located in front of the fuel tank, on the passenger side of the vehicle. Remove the plastic splash shield or undertray panels if present to gain clear access to the canister area. You may need to remove multiple fasteners to fully expose the canister.
- 2Disconnect vapor lines from canisterIdentify all vapor lines connected to the charcoal canister (typically 2-3 lines). Press the release tabs on each quick-connect fitting while pulling the line away from the canister. If lines are stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully depress the internal locking tabs. Mark or photograph line positions for correct reassembly.⚠Quick-connect fittings can break easily. Do not use excessive force or pry against the canister nipples.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector for the canister vent valve (typically mounted on top or side of canister). Press the locking tab and pull connector straight away from the valve. Move wiring harness aside to provide clearance for canister removal.

- 5Remove charcoal canisterLower the canister and bracket assembly from the vehicle. If the canister is attached to the bracket with separate bolts, remove those bolts and separate the canister from the bracket. Inspect the bracket for damage or corrosion and replace if necessary.
- 6Inspect vapor lines and fittingsExamine all vapor line quick-connect fittings and seals for cracks, damage, or deterioration. Check vapor lines for kinks, cracks, or blockages. Replace any damaged seals or lines before installing the new canister.
- 7Install new charcoal canister to bracketIf the bracket was separated, attach the new charcoal canister to the mounting bracket. Ensure the canister is oriented correctly with vapor line connections accessible and vent valve positioned properly.

Reassembly

Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle. Listen for abnormal hissing or vacuum leaks from the canister area.
- Check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the EVAP system using an OBD-II scanner. Clear any pre-existing codes and verify none return.
- Perform an EVAP system leak test if scanner has that capability, or drive vehicle through several drive cycles to allow the EVAP monitor to complete.
- Visually inspect all connections one final time to confirm no leaks or loose fittings.
