Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake.
  2. Place wheel chocks behind front wheels.
  3. Allow engine to cool completely if recently driven.
  4. Relieve fuel system pressure if vehicle has been recently driven to minimize vapor buildup.
  5. Raise rear of vehicle and support securely on jack stands.
  6. Remove rear passenger-side wheel for improved access.

    Access the charcoal canister
    The charcoal canister is located in front of the fuel tank, on the passenger side of the vehicle. Remove the plastic splash shield or undertray panels if present to gain clear access to the canister area. You may need to remove multiple fasteners to fully expose the canister.

    Disconnect vapor lines from canister
    Identify all vapor lines connected to the charcoal canister (typically 2-3 lines). Press the release tabs on each quick-connect fitting while pulling the line away from the canister. If lines are stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully depress the internal locking tabs. Mark or photograph line positions for correct reassembly.
    Quick-connect fittings can break easily. Do not use excessive force or pry against the canister nipples.

    Disconnect electrical connector
    Locate the electrical connector for the canister vent valve (typically mounted on top or side of canister). Press the locking tab and pull connector straight away from the valve. Move wiring harness aside to provide clearance for canister removal.

    Remove canister mounting bracket
    Remove the two mounting bolts securing the canister bracket to the vehicle underbody using a 12mm socket. Support the canister with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.

    Lower the canister and bracket assembly from the vehicle. If the canister is attached to the bracket with separate bolts, remove those bolts and separate the canister from the bracket. Inspect the bracket for damage or corrosion and replace if necessary.

    Examine all vapor line quick-connect fittings and seals for cracks, damage, or deterioration. Check vapor lines for kinks, cracks, or blockages. Replace any damaged seals or lines before installing the new canister.

    Install new charcoal canister to bracket
    If the bracket was separated, attach the new charcoal canister to the mounting bracket. Ensure the canister is oriented correctly with vapor line connections accessible and vent valve positioned properly.

    Install canister assembly to vehicle
    Lift the canister and bracket assembly into position under the vehicle. Align mounting holes with the vehicle underbody. Install mounting bolts and tighten to specification using a torque wrench.

    Reconnect vapor lines

    Reinstall any splash shields or undertray panels removed during disassembly. Reinstall the rear passenger-side wheel and tighten lug nuts to factory specification. Lower the vehicle from jack stands.

Reassembly

  1. Double-check all vapor line connections are fully seated and locked.
  2. Verify electrical connector is securely attached to vent valve.
  3. Ensure no tools or parts were left in the work area before lowering vehicle.

Verification
