Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and ensure front wheels are pointed straight ahead
- Turn ignition off and remove key from ignition
- Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait minimum 15 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Lower steering column to lowest position and telescope fully out for access
- Set parking brake and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coversUsing T20 Torx bit, remove the two screws securing the lower steering column cover. Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing the retaining clips. Remove the upper steering column cover by releasing the clips on both sides and lifting upward. Set covers aside in a safe location to prevent damage.
- 2Disconnect diagnostic connectorLocate the 6-pin diagnostic connector on the left side of the steering column near the instrument cluster. Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the connector. This connector is used for steering angle sensor communication.
- 3Remove knee bolster panelUsing 8mm socket, remove the four bolts securing the driver's knee bolster panel below the steering column. Carefully pull the panel forward and disconnect any electrical connectors for lights or sensors. Remove panel completely to access steering column mounting area.
- 4Locate and access steering angle sensorThe steering angle sensor is located on the steering column shaft below the steering wheel, integrated into a ring-shaped module. Identify the sensor electrical connector with a gray or black housing on the sensor body. Note the orientation of the sensor relative to the steering shaft for proper reinstallation.
- 5Disconnect steering angle sensor electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the steering angle sensor electrical connector and carefully pull to disconnect. The connector may be tight due to age and location. Use a flat-blade tool if necessary to assist with releasing the locking tab, but avoid damaging the connector housing.
- 6Remove steering angle sensor mounting hardwareUsing T30 Torx bit, remove the three mounting screws securing the steering angle sensor to the steering column. The screws are evenly spaced around the sensor ring. Keep screws organized as they may have thread-locking compound applied.
- 7Remove steering angle sensorCarefully slide the steering angle sensor unit off the steering shaft. The sensor fits over the shaft and may require gentle wiggling to release. Do not force or twist excessively. Inspect the sensor mounting surface on the steering shaft for debris or damage and clean if necessary with a lint-free cloth.⚠Do not rotate the steering wheel or allow the steering shaft to turn once the sensor is removed. This will cause loss of calibration and potential clock spring damage.
- 8Install new steering angle sensorAlign the new steering angle sensor with the steering shaft, ensuring the sensor is oriented correctly with the flat side or alignment key matching the shaft. Slide the sensor onto the shaft until it seats fully against the mounting surface. Verify the sensor sits flush and is not cocked or misaligned.

Verification
- Start engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster (ESP, ABS, steering warning lights should be off)
- Using diagnostic tool, verify steering angle sensor is reading 0 degrees with wheels straight ahead (tolerance +/- 3 degrees)
- Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock slowly and verify sensor reading changes smoothly from approximately -720 to +720 degrees
- Test drive vehicle and verify ESP, traction control, and stability systems function properly during turns and lane changes
- Verify no fault codes are present in steering angle sensor, ESP, ABS, or related systems using diagnostic scan tool
