Sunroof Motor

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the sunroof motor on a 2007 Ram 3500 with power sunroof.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
3. Close sunroof fully if motor is still functional - if not, manually close using emergency procedure in owner's manual
4. Clean sunroof area and overhead console to prevent debris from falling into mechanism
5. Protect interior seats and surfaces with drop cloths

Procedure

   Remove overhead console
   Use trim panel removal tool to carefully pry down the overhead console at the rear edge. Disconnect electrical connectors for dome lights, sunroof switch, and any other accessories. Remove console completely and set aside in safe location.

   Remove sunroof switch assembly
   Locate the sunroof switch in the overhead console housing. Press release tabs on sides of switch module and pull switch downward to disconnect from wiring harness. Set switch aside.

   Access sunroof headliner panel
   Locate the headliner panel covering the sunroof mechanism. Remove the fasteners securing the headliner access panel (verify quantity and type by inspection; aftermarket sunroofs vary).    Mark cable positions
   Before disconnecting any cables, use masking tape or marker to mark the exact position of sunroof cables on their spools and the motor housing. This ensures proper reassembly timing. Take photos for reference if possible.

   Locate the electrical connector on the sunroof motor assembly. Press release tab and pull connector straight off motor. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage.

   Release sunroof cables from motor
   Identify cable attachment points on motor drive mechanism. Remove cable retaining clips by carefully prying with flathead screwdriver. Slowly unwind cables from motor spools while maintaining reference marks made earlier. Support cables to prevent them from retracting into guides.

   Remove sunroof motor mounting fasteners

   Carefully extract sunroof motor from mounting location, maneuvering around any wiring harnesses or structural supports. Note orientation of motor for proper installation of replacement unit.

   Install new sunroof motor
   Position new sunroof motor in mounting location matching original orientation. Align mounting holes with track assembly. Install mounting fasteners hand-tight first, then tighten in star pattern to ensure even seating. Verify motor sits flush against mounting surface.

    Reconnect sunroof cables
    Wind sunroof cables onto new motor spools, aligning with reference marks made during disassembly. Ensure cables seat properly in their grooves and install retaining clips. Verify equal cable tension on both sides of sunroof mechanism.

    Connect electrical and test
    Reconnect electrical connector to sunroof motor ensuring positive click. Temporarily reconnect battery negative terminal. Test sunroof operation through full range of motion - tilt, slide open, and close. Listen for unusual noises indicating binding or misalignment. Disconnect battery again before completing reassembly.

    Reinstall headliner access panel
    Position headliner access panel back into place. Reinstall the original access panel fasteners and tighten securely without over-tightening to avoid cracking plastic. Ensure panel sits flush with surrounding headliner.

    Reinstall overhead console
    Reconnect all electrical connectors for dome lights, sunroof switch, and accessories. Align overhead console with mounting points and press firmly until retaining clips engage. Verify all clips are fully seated.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect battery negative terminal and tighten securely
2. Perform sunroof initialization procedure if required - typically cycle sunroof full open and closed 2-3 times
3. Test all overhead console functions including dome lights and switches
4. Check sunroof seal alignment and adjust if necessary to prevent wind noise or water leaks

Verification

• Operate sunroof through complete range: fully closed, vent tilt, fully open, and return to closed position
• Verify sunroof stops at proper positions without binding or hesitation
• Check that sunroof closes flush with roof panel with even gaps on all sides
• Test sunroof express open/close function if equipped
• Inspect for any abnormal noises during operation
• Verify overhead console lights and all switches function properly
• Check that headliner panels are secure with no rattles or loose trim
