Sunroof Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the sunroof switch assembly in the overhead console of a 2007 Ram 3500.

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on level ground and turn off the ignition
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
3. Open the sunroof if possible to allow easier access to the overhead console area
4. Ensure interior dome lights are off to prevent draining the battery during repair

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove overhead console lens
   Using a trim panel removal tool or small flathead screwdriver wrapped in a soft cloth, carefully pry the lens cover away from the overhead console. Start at one end and work your way around the perimeter. The lens is held by spring clips and should release with gentle pressure.

   Remove map light bulbs
   Remove the map light bulbs from their sockets by gently pulling them straight out. This prevents damage to the bulbs and provides better access to the console mounting screws.

   Remove overhead console mounting screws
   Locate and remove the Phillips head screws securing the overhead console to the headliner. There are typically 2-4 screws depending on the console configuration. Keep these screws organized for reassembly.

   Lower overhead console
   Carefully lower the overhead console housing from the headliner. Allow it to hang by the wiring harnesses. Do not pull forcefully as the wiring harnesses have limited slack.

   Disconnect wiring harness from sunroof switch
   Locate the electrical connector on the back of the sunroof switch assembly. Press the release tab on the connector and carefully pull the connector straight back to disconnect it from the switch.

   Remove sunroof switch from console
   The sunroof switch is typically held in the console housing by retaining clips or tabs. Press the release tabs on the sides of the switch and push it out from the front of the console. Note the orientation of the switch for proper installation of the replacement.

   Install new sunroof switch
   Take the new sunroof switch and align it with the opening in the overhead console. Ensure the switch is oriented correctly with the open/close indicators in the proper position. Press firmly until the retaining clips engage and the switch is secure in the console housing.

   Reconnect wiring harness
   Connect the electrical harness to the back of the new sunroof switch. Push the connector in until you hear or feel a distinct click, indicating the locking tab has engaged properly.

   Test switch function
   Before reinstalling the console, ensure your hands and tools are clear of any airbag components, then reconnect the negative battery cable and test the sunroof switch operation. Verify that the sunroof opens, closes, tilts, and that all switch positions function correctly. If the sunroof does not operate, disconnect the battery again before checking the wiring connection and switch orientation.

    Reinstall overhead console
    Once functionality is confirmed, disconnect the battery again. Position the overhead console back into the headliner opening and align the screw holes. Install the Phillips head screws and tighten them snugly but do not overtighten to avoid cracking the plastic console housing.

    Reinstall map light bulbs and lens
    Insert the map light bulbs back into their sockets. Align the lens cover with the overhead console and press firmly around all edges until all spring clips engage and the lens is seated flush against the console.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all wiring harnesses are properly routed and not pinched between the console and headliner
2. Verify the overhead console lens is securely clipped in place with no gaps
3. Reconnect the negative battery cable

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position and test all sunroof switch functions including open, close, tilt up, and tilt down
• Verify the sunroof operates smoothly in all directions without binding or stopping prematurely
• Check that map lights and other overhead console functions still operate correctly
• Ensure there are no unusual noises from the sunroof motor and that the switch illumination works properly if equipped
