This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a faulty seat heater element in a 2022 Rivian EDV 500, requiring removal of seat upholstery and replacement of the heating mat.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the 12V battery and wait 15 minutes before beginning work to allow capacitors to discharge and prevent airbag deployment
⚠️Never probe or damage the airbag circuit during seat work - improper handling can cause deployment and serious injury
⚠Electric vehicle high voltage systems are present - do not disconnect any orange cables or connectors
⚠Test the new heater element resistance before installation to avoid repeating this procedure
ℹ️Mark the orientation of all connectors and hog ring positions before disassembly for proper reassembly

Parts
- Seat heater element assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification for specific seat position
- Hog rings × 20 — Stainless steel upholstery hog rings
- Electrical connector seal × 1 — Use OEM specification if damaged
- Double-sided adhesive tape × 1 — High-temperature automotive grade
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure ignition is off and key fob is at least 15 feet away from vehicle
- Open driver's door to access 12V battery disconnect switch in fuse panel under steering column
- Disconnect 12V battery using battery disconnect switch and wait 15 minutes
- Photograph seat upholstery attachment points and connector routing for reference
- Move affected seat to full forward position for rear access, then full rearward for front access as needed
Procedure
- 1Verify heater element failureUsing the multimeter, test the seat heater element resistance at the connector under the seat. Disconnect the heater element connector and measure resistance between the two terminals. A functioning heater should read between 2-6 ohms. An open circuit (infinite resistance) or short circuit (zero resistance) indicates a faulty element. Document the reading.
- 2Remove seat mounting boltsUsing the 13mm socket, remove the four seat track mounting bolts (two front, two rear). Support the seat to prevent tipping. Carefully tilt the seat backward to access the electrical connectors underneath. Keep track of any spacers or washers on the mounting bolts.
- 3Disconnect seat electrical connectorsLocate all electrical connectors under the seat including heater element, occupancy sensor, and seatbelt buckle connections. Press the release tabs and disconnect each connector. Note the connector positions and routing. If the seat has memory or lumbar adjustment, disconnect those connectors as well. Remove the seat from the vehicle.
- 4Remove seat back panel and headrestRemove the headrest by pressing the release buttons at the base of the headrest guides and pulling upward. Using the T30 Torx driver, remove the plastic panel on the rear of the seat back. This panel is typically secured by 4-6 screws. Carefully pull the panel away, noting any clips that may be present.
- 5Remove seat cushion side shieldsUsing trim removal tools, carefully pry the plastic side shields from both sides of the seat cushion. These are secured by clips and may require gentle manipulation. Work slowly to avoid breaking the clips. Set the shields aside in a clean area.
- 6Release seat upholstery hog ringsUsing the hog ring removal tool, locate and remove all hog rings securing the seat upholstery to the seat frame. Start at the front edge of the cushion and work around the perimeter. On the EDV 500, there are typically 15-20 hog rings per cushion. Place removed hog rings in a container as they may be reusable if not damaged. Mark or photograph the hog ring positions for reassembly.
- 7Remove seat cushion upholsteryCarefully peel back the seat cushion upholstery from the foam padding. Work slowly to avoid tearing the material. If adhesive is present, use a heat gun on low setting to soften it. The heater element is laminated between the foam and upholstery or embedded in the foam. Disconnect the heater element wire routing from any clips or channels in the seat frame.
- 8Remove faulty heater elementLocate the heater element mat between the foam and upholstery. It may be adhered with double-sided tape or integrated into a fabric layer. Carefully separate the old heater element from the foam and upholstery. If adhesive is strong, use heat gun carefully to soften without damaging upholstery. Note the exact position and orientation of the element for new installation.
- 9Prepare and test new heater elementBefore installation, test the new heater element with the multimeter to confirm proper resistance (2-6 ohms). Clean the foam surface where the new element will be installed using a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol if needed. Allow to dry completely. Verify the new element matches the dimensions and connector type of the original.
- 10Install new heater elementPosition the new heater element on the seat foam in the exact location of the original, ensuring the heating wires are not twisted or kinked. The connector should route to the same exit point as the original. Apply high-temperature double-sided adhesive tape to secure the element to the foam if not pre-applied. Press firmly to ensure good adhesion across the entire element surface.
- 11Reinstall seat upholsteryCarefully stretch the seat upholstery back over the foam and new heater element, ensuring no wrinkles or bunching occurs over the heating area. Route the heater element wire through the original path in the seat frame. Align the upholstery edges with the seat frame attachment points.
- 12Secure upholstery with hog ringsUsing hog ring pliers, install new or reusable hog rings at all marked positions around the seat cushion perimeter. Ensure even tension on the upholstery - it should be taut but not overstretched. Work from the center outward to each side to maintain proper alignment. Verify the upholstery sits evenly with no gaps or loose areas.
- 13Reinstall seat componentsReinstall the seat cushion side shields by aligning the clips and pressing firmly until they snap into place. Reinstall the seat back panel using the T30 Torx driver and reinstall the headrest by inserting into the guides until it clicks. Verify all panels are secure and properly aligned.
- 14Reinstall seat in vehicleCarefully lift the seat into the vehicle and position over the mounting points. Reconnect all electrical connectors under the seat in their original locations: heater element, occupancy sensor, seatbelt buckle, and any other disconnected connectors. Ensure connectors are fully seated with audible clicks.
- 15Secure seat mounting boltsAlign the seat tracks with the floor mounting points. Install all four mounting bolts with any original spacers or washers. Hand-tighten first to ensure proper alignment, then tighten securely with the 13mm socket. Verify the seat slides smoothly on its tracks and all positions lock properly.
Reassembly
- Reconnect the 12V battery using the battery disconnect switch under the steering column
- Wait for vehicle systems to initialize (approximately 2 minutes)
- Ensure all seat position sensors and occupancy sensor are functioning - check the instrument cluster for any warnings
- If airbag or seatbelt warning lights appear, turn ignition off and verify all connectors are fully seated before proceeding
Verification
- Turn the ignition to ON position and activate the seat heater using the climate controls
- Allow 2-3 minutes for the seat to warm up and verify heat is being generated evenly across the seating surface
- Check that the seat heater indicator light illuminates on the control panel
- Test all seat heater levels (low, medium, high if equipped) to ensure proper operation
- Verify no airbag, seatbelt, or occupancy sensor warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
- Test seat adjustment functions (forward/back, recline) to ensure no interference with installed components
- Inspect upholstery for proper fit with no wrinkles or bunching over the heater area
- Using an infrared thermometer after 5 minutes of operation, verify seat surface temperature reaches approximately 95-105°F on highest setting
