Turn Signal Bulb - Rear

Replace the rear turn signal bulb on a 2022 Rivian EDV 500 by accessing the tail lamp assembly from inside the cargo area.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key fob from vehicle interior
3. Open rear cargo doors to access interior trim panels
4. Clear cargo area of all items for workspace
5. Identify which side (left or right) requires bulb replacement
6. Allow tail lamp assembly to cool if vehicle was recently operated

Procedure

   Access interior cargo panel
   Open the rear cargo door on the side requiring service. Locate the interior cargo trim panel that covers the tail lamp assembly area. This panel is typically on the rear corner of the cargo compartment.

   Remove cargo area trim fasteners
   Using the trim panel removal tool, carefully pry out the plastic push-pin fasteners securing the cargo trim panel. Start from the bottom edge and work upward. There are typically 6-8 fasteners along the perimeter. Store fasteners in a container to prevent loss.

   Remove cargo trim panel
   Gently pull the trim panel away from the body, checking for any remaining clips or fasteners. Disconnect any electrical connectors for cargo lights or accessories if present. Set the panel aside in a safe location where it will not be damaged.

   Locate tail lamp assembly mounting
   With the trim panel removed, locate the rear of the tail lamp assembly. Identify the mounting nuts or bolts (typically three 10mm nuts) that secure the tail lamp housing to the body structure. Note the location of the wiring harness connector.

   Disconnect tail lamp electrical connector
   Locate the main electrical connector for the tail lamp assembly. Press the release tab and carefully pull the connector straight out from the lamp assembly socket. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.

   Remove tail lamp assembly mounting fasteners
   Using a 10mm socket and ratchet, remove the mounting nuts securing the tail lamp assembly to the body. Support the lamp assembly from the exterior if possible to prevent it from falling. Keep all mounting hardware together for reinstallation.

   Extract tail lamp assembly
   Carefully pull the tail lamp assembly straight back from the exterior of the vehicle. The assembly may have alignment pins that require gentle rocking to release. Once free, bring the assembly into the cargo area for bulb access.

   Access turn signal bulb socket
   On the back of the tail lamp assembly, locate the turn signal bulb socket. It is typically marked with an amber lens indicator or labeled diagram. The socket is accessed by rotating it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn.

   Remove turn signal bulb
   Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out from the lamp housing. Remove the old bulb from the socket by either pulling it straight out (wedge base) or pressing in and rotating counterclockwise (bayonet base). Avoid touching the new bulb glass with bare fingers.

    Install new turn signal bulb
    Insert the new turn signal bulb into the socket, ensuring proper orientation. For bayonet-style bulbs, press in and rotate clockwise until it locks. For wedge-style bulbs, press firmly into the socket until fully seated.

    Test bulb operation before reassembly
    Reconnect the tail lamp electrical connector temporarily. Have an assistant turn the ignition to ON and activate the turn signals to verify the new bulb operates correctly. If bulb does not illuminate, verify proper installation and socket condition.

    Reinstall tail lamp assembly
    Position the tail lamp assembly back into the body opening, aligning the mounting studs with their corresponding holes. Ensure any seals or gaskets are properly positioned. Press the assembly firmly into place until it seats flush with the body.

    Secure tail lamp mounting fasteners
    Install the mounting nuts onto the studs and hand-tighten. Using the 10mm socket, tighten the nuts in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure distribution. Tighten firmly but do not overtighten as this may crack the lamp housing.

    Reconnect electrical and reinstall trim
    Ensure the main electrical connector is fully seated and locked. Position the cargo trim panel back into place, ensuring all clips align with their mounting points. Press firmly around the perimeter to engage the clips, then install the push-pin fasteners.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trim panel fasteners are fully seated and secure
2. Verify the tail lamp assembly is flush with the body and properly aligned
3. Reconnect any cargo area accessory electrical connectors that were disconnected
4. Close the cargo door and inspect exterior lamp alignment

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position and activate turn signals to verify proper operation on both sides
• Check that all turn signal functions work correctly including hazard lights
• Visually inspect the exterior to ensure proper lamp alignment and seal
• Verify no error messages appear on the instrument cluster
• Confirm the cargo trim panel is secure with no loose fasteners or rattles
