Washer Reservoir

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the windshield washer reservoir on a 2022 Rivian EDV 500 electric delivery van.

Fluids

• Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal
3. Allow vehicle systems to power down completely (wait 2 minutes)
4. Turn front wheels fully to the right for better access to left wheel well
5. Place fluid drain pan under left front wheel well area

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove front left wheel
   Loosen the lug nuts on the front left wheel, then raise and support the vehicle on a jack stand. Remove the wheel completely to access the inner fender liner.

   Remove inner fender liner
   Using trim panel removal tools, carefully remove the plastic push clips securing the inner fender liner. There are approximately 8-10 clips along the perimeter. Fold the liner back or remove it completely to expose the washer reservoir mounted behind it.

   Disconnect washer pump electrical connector
   Locate the washer pump mounted on the bottom of the reservoir. Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull straight out to disconnect. Note the connector orientation for reinstallation.

   Disconnect washer hoses
   Locate the washer fluid hose connected to the pump outlet. Squeeze the hose clamp and slide it back, then pull the hose straight off the pump barb. Allow remaining fluid to drain into the pan. If equipped with headlight washers, disconnect that hose as well.

   Drain remaining washer fluid
   Remove the reservoir filler cap to vent the system. Tilt or manipulate the reservoir as much as possible while still mounted to drain maximum fluid into the pan through the disconnected hose port.

   Remove reservoir mounting fasteners
   Locate the two 10mm bolts securing the top of the reservoir to the body bracket. Remove these bolts completely. The reservoir may also have a lower mounting pin that sits in a rubber grommet.

   Remove washer pump from old reservoir
   If reusing the washer pump, rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight out from the reservoir. The pump has a sealing grommet that should come out with it. Inspect the grommet for damage.

   Extract reservoir from wheel well
   Carefully maneuver the reservoir out through the wheel well opening. You may need to rotate and angle it to clear the frame rails and suspension components. Have a towel ready to catch any remaining fluid.

   Install washer pump in new reservoir
   If installing a new reservoir, transfer the washer pump to the new unit. Insert the pump with its sealing grommet into the reservoir opening and rotate clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Ensure the grommet seats properly to prevent leaks.

    Position new reservoir
    Maneuver the new reservoir into the wheel well mounting location. Align the lower mounting pin with its grommet, then align the upper mounting holes with the body bracket.

    Install reservoir mounting fasteners
    Install the two 10mm mounting bolts through the upper bracket and thread them into the reservoir mounting ears. Tighten bolts snugly but do not overtighten as the reservoir is plastic. Ensure the lower pin is fully seated in its grommet.

    Reconnect washer hoses
    Push the washer fluid hose(s) firmly onto the pump outlet barb until fully seated. Slide the hose clamp(s) forward over the connection point to secure. Verify connections are tight.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Align the washer pump electrical connector and push it onto the pump terminals until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently pull to verify it is secure.

    Reinstall inner fender liner
    Position the inner fender liner back in place and secure with all original push clips. Ensure the liner is properly seated and not interfering with any moving suspension components or the tire.

    Reinstall wheel and reconnect battery
    Mount the front left wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts. Lower vehicle to the ground and torque lug nuts to specification in a star pattern. Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Verify all hose connections are secure and clamps are positioned correctly
3. Check that inner fender liner does not contact tire during full steering lock in both directions
4. Torque wheel lug nuts to Rivian specification (typically 150 ft-lbs for this vehicle class)

Verification

• Fill washer reservoir with 3.5 quarts of windshield washer fluid
• Turn ignition to ON position without starting (Ready mode)
• Activate windshield washers and verify fluid sprays properly from all nozzles
• Check for leaks at pump connections, hose connections, and reservoir seams
• Verify washer pump operates quietly without unusual noise
• Test wash/wipe function multiple times to ensure consistent operation
• Inspect wheel well area for any fluid drips after operation
