Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Open the front door to be serviced and support it in the open position
- Lower the door window fully using the manual door release procedures documented in service manual
- Protect surrounding interior surfaces with fender covers or soft towels to prevent scratching
Procedure
- 1Remove door pull handle coverUsing a trim removal tool, carefully pry up the small cover plate behind the door pull handle. Start at the rear edge and work forward. Remove the T20 Torx screw hidden beneath this cover.
- 2Remove door panel fastenersRemove all T25 Torx screws around the perimeter of the door panel (typically 6-8 screws). Remove the T30 Torx screw located inside the door pull handle recess. Keep all fasteners organized by location for reassembly.
- 3Disconnect door panel switchesGently pull the door panel away from the door frame starting at the bottom rear corner. Once you have 2-3 inches of clearance, reach behind and disconnect the electrical connectors for the window switches, mirror controls, and ambient lighting. Press the release tabs while pulling straight out on each connector.
- 4Remove door panelLift the door panel upward to disengage it from the upper door frame channel, then remove it completely from the vehicle. Set the panel aside on a protected surface with the interior side facing up to prevent scratching.
- 5Remove or fold back vapor barrierCarefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier starting at the area near the door latch mechanism. Only remove as much as necessary to access the lock actuator. If the adhesive is damaged, new vapor barrier tape will be needed during reassembly.
- 6Locate and access door lock actuatorUsing a work light, locate the door lock actuator assembly mounted to the door latch mechanism. It will be positioned inside the door cavity with an electrical connector and mechanical linkage rods attached. Note the position and routing of all linkage rods before removal.
- 7Disconnect actuator electrical connectorPress the release tab on the door lock actuator electrical connector and pull straight out to disconnect. The connector may be tight due to weatherproofing seals, so use steady pressure rather than excessive force.
- 8Disconnect actuator linkage rodsUsing needle nose pliers, carefully disconnect the plastic linkage rod clips from the actuator. There will typically be 2-3 linkage rods connecting the actuator to the door latch mechanism. Slide the clips along the rods to release them, and note their exact positioning for reassembly.
- 9Remove actuator mounting fastenersRemove the 10mm bolts or T30 Torx screws securing the actuator to the door structure (typically 2-3 fasteners). Support the actuator while removing the last fastener to prevent it from falling into the door cavity.
- 10Remove old actuatorCarefully maneuver the old actuator out through the service opening in the door frame. Be mindful of sharp metal edges inside the door. Inspect the actuator and linkage rods for damage or wear patterns that may indicate related issues.
- 11Install new actuatorPosition the new actuator into the door cavity and align it with the mounting holes. Install and hand-tighten the mounting fasteners, ensuring the actuator is properly seated against the door structure before final tightening. Tighten fasteners securely but do not overtighten into the door structure.
- 12Connect linkage rodsReconnect all linkage rods to the new actuator in the same configuration as the original. Ensure the plastic clips snap fully into place on each rod. Gently test each linkage rod by hand to confirm secure attachment and proper movement range.
- 13Connect electrical connectorPlug the electrical connector into the new actuator until you hear and feel a positive click indicating full engagement. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place.
Reassembly
- Reattach the vapor barrier, ensuring complete adhesion around all edges to maintain moisture seal. Replace any damaged sections with new vapor barrier tape
- Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors for switches, mirror controls, and lighting before positioning the panel
- Align the door panel with the upper door frame channel and slide downward to engage, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all panel clips
- Reinstall all T25 and T30 Torx screws in their original locations, tightening in a cross pattern to ensure even panel seating
- Reinstall the door pull handle cover and secure with the T20 Torx screw
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal
Verification
- With the battery reconnected, cycle the door lock multiple times using the key fob remote to verify proper lock and unlock operation
- Test the door lock using the interior door lock switch to confirm full functionality
- Attempt to open the door from both inside and outside to verify the latch mechanism operates correctly with the new actuator
