This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the horn assembly on a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 electric delivery van.

Warnings

Always disconnect the 12V battery before performing electrical work on electric vehicles to prevent short circuits and system faults
ℹ️The horn is located behind the front bumper fascia and requires partial removal of the front undercover for access
Do not force trim clips or fasteners; damaged clips may not secure components properly after reinstallation

Parts

  • Horn assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Horn bracket (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Push clips for undercover × 4 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn off vehicle and remove key fob from cabin
  3. Open hood and locate 12V accessory battery in front compartment
  4. Disconnect negative terminal on 12V battery and secure cable away from terminal
  5. Allow 5 minutes for vehicle systems to power down completely
  6. Ensure front wheels are chocked for safety

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access front undercover area
From underneath the front of the vehicle, locate the front undercover panel below the bumper. This plastic panel protects components and will need partial removal for horn access. Identify the push clips and fasteners securing the forward section of the undercover.
  2. 2
    Remove front undercover fasteners
Using the trim panel removal tool, carefully pry out the center pins of the push clips securing the front section of the undercover. There are typically 6-8 clips along the front edge. Once center pins are removed, pull the entire clip assembly out. Set all clips aside for reinstallation, replacing any damaged clips with new ones.
  3. 3
    Lower front undercover section
With fasteners removed, carefully lower the front section of the undercover to expose the area behind the bumper fascia. You may need to flex the panel slightly to clear mounting tabs. Support the panel so it doesn't hang on wiring harnesses or other components.
  4. 4
    Locate horn assembly
Use a shop light to locate the horn assembly mounted on a bracket behind the driver side of the front bumper beam, typically positioned near the center-left of the vehicle. The horn is a circular or disc-shaped component with a single electrical connector and mounting bolt.
  5. 5
    Disconnect horn electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the back of the horn. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight off the horn terminal. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If the connector is corroded or difficult to remove, apply contact cleaner and gently work it free.
  6. 6
    Remove horn mounting hardware
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the horn to its mounting bracket. On some EDV 500 models, this may be a Torx T20 fastener instead. Support the horn as you remove the last bit of the fastener so it doesn't drop.
  7. 7
    Remove horn from bracket
Slide the horn off the mounting bracket stud or tab. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage, cracks, or excessive corrosion. If the bracket is damaged, it should be replaced as it provides critical grounding for the horn circuit.
  8. 8
Inspect horn mounting point and wiring
Clean the mounting surface on the bracket with a wire brush to ensure good electrical ground contact. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for damage, corrosion, or burned contacts. Check that the connector locking tab is intact. If you have a multimeter, verify continuity to ground on the mounting bracket.
  9. 9
    Install new horn
Position the new horn onto the mounting bracket, aligning the mounting hole with the bracket stud or hole. Ensure the horn terminal is oriented for easy connector access and that no wiring will be pinched during installation.
  10. 10
    Secure horn mounting hardware
Install the mounting bolt or Torx fastener and tighten securely by hand using the 10mm socket or T20 driver. The horn must be firmly mounted to ensure proper grounding. Verify the horn doesn't rotate or move when pushed by hand.
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the horn terminal until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it's fully locked. Ensure no wires are stretched or routed where they could chafe against sharp edges.
  12. 12
    Reinstall front undercover
Raise the front undercover section back into position, aligning all mounting holes with the vehicle structure. Press each push clip through its hole, then push the center pin down until it's flush with the clip body to lock it in place. Verify the undercover is secure and properly seated along all edges.
  13. 13
    Reconnect 12V battery
Return to the front compartment and reconnect the negative terminal to the 12V accessory battery. Tighten the terminal clamp securely. The vehicle may take 30-60 seconds to initialize all systems after battery reconnection.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all undercover clips are fully seated and locked to prevent rattles or panel detachment at speed
  2. Verify no tools or parts were left in the front bumper area before closing the hood
  3. Double-check that all electrical connectors are fully locked and not under tension

Verification

  • With the vehicle powered on, press the horn button on the steering wheel to verify proper horn operation
  • Listen for a clear, loud horn sound without buzzing, clicking, or intermittent operation
  • Check that the horn activates immediately when pressed and stops cleanly when released
  • Verify no warning lights or fault codes appear on the instrument cluster after horn operation
  • Inspect the front undercover from underneath to ensure it's properly secured with no loose sections or gaps
  • Test the horn several times from both sides of the steering wheel if equipped with dual horn buttons
