Warnings

The 12V battery powers accessory systems including the washer pump. Always disconnect before working on electrical components.
ℹ️Washer fluid may spill during pump removal. Washer fluid is toxic if ingested and can damage paint if not cleaned promptly.
ℹ️Work in a well-ventilated area as washer fluid vapors can be irritating.

Parts

  • Windshield washer pump assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Washer pump grommet seal × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Hose clamps (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  3. Locate washer fluid reservoir in front driver-side area behind front bumper fascia
  4. Prepare drain pan and shop towels for fluid spillage
  5. Ensure work area lighting is adequate for confined space work

Procedure

  1. 1
Access front bumper and reservoir area
Remove front driver-side wheel well liner access panel using trim removal tools. Remove approximately 6-8 push-pin fasteners to fold back the wheel well liner for access to the washer reservoir. On the EDV 500, the reservoir is mounted behind the front fascia on the driver side.
  2. 2
    Drain washer fluid reservoir
Position drain pan beneath the reservoir area. Using needle-nose pliers, carefully squeeze the clamp on the lower washer fluid hose and slide it back from the pump outlet. Disconnect the hose and allow fluid to drain into the pan. If the reservoir is full, you may need to use a fluid transfer pump or siphon to remove fluid before disconnecting.
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connector
Locate the washer pump electrical connector on the pump body. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull straight out to disconnect. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage. If testing the old pump, use a multimeter to verify the pump receives approximately 12V when activated.
  4. 4
    Disconnect washer fluid delivery hose
Locate the upper delivery hose that runs from the pump to the windshield nozzles. Squeeze the hose clamp with pliers and slide it back along the hose. Carefully twist and pull the hose from the pump outlet fitting. Note the orientation and routing of the hose for reinstallation.
  5. 5
    Remove washer pump from reservoir
The washer pump is mounted in the reservoir tank with a grommet seal. Grasp the pump body firmly and rotate counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn while pulling outward. The pump should release from the grommet mount. If stuck, gently pry with a trim tool while rotating. Be careful not to crack the plastic reservoir tank.
  6. 6
    Inspect reservoir and grommet
With the pump removed, inspect the reservoir opening and grommet seal for cracks, deterioration, or debris. Clean the mounting area with a shop towel. Check inside the reservoir for sediment or debris that could clog the new pump. If the grommet is damaged, cracked, or compressed, replace it with a new one.
  7. 7
    Install new washer pump
If installing a new grommet, press it firmly into the reservoir mounting hole ensuring it seats completely. Lubricate the new pump body lightly with washer fluid. Align the pump with the grommet opening and push while rotating clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until the pump locks into place. Ensure the pump is fully seated and secure in the grommet.
  8. 8
    Reconnect delivery hoses
Connect the upper delivery hose to the pump outlet and slide the hose clamp into position approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the fitting. Ensure the hose is fully seated on the barbed fitting. Connect the lower inlet hose if it was removed, positioning the clamp similarly.
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the pump terminals until it clicks and locks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure. Ensure no wires are pinched or stressed.
  10. 10
    Refill and test system
Refill the washer fluid reservoir with approximately 3.5 quarts of windshield washer fluid, or to the full mark. Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal. Turn the vehicle to accessory mode and activate the washer system. Check for leaks at all connection points while the pump operates. Verify fluid sprays correctly from windshield nozzles.
  11. 11
    Reinstall wheel well liner
Once operation is verified and no leaks are present, reposition the wheel well liner access panel. Install all push-pin fasteners in their original locations, ensuring the liner is properly seated and secure.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all hose clamps are properly positioned and tight to prevent leaks
  2. Verify electrical connector is fully locked and sealed
  3. Check that wheel well liner is properly secured with all fasteners installed
  4. Wipe up any spilled washer fluid from painted surfaces immediately to prevent damage

Verification

  • Activate washer system and verify strong, consistent spray pattern from all nozzles
  • Listen for abnormal pump noise which may indicate air in the system or improper installation
  • Check all connection points for leaks while pump is running and immediately after
  • Verify reservoir fluid level drops appropriately when washers are operated
  • Test washer operation multiple times to ensure pump primes properly and delivers fluid consistently
  • Inspect wheel well area for any fluid drips after test cycles are complete
