Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

Balance all four tires on a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 to eliminate vibration and ensure even tire wear on this electric delivery vehicle.

Warnings

⚠️This electric vehicle is extremely heavy (9000+ lbs GVWR). Ensure jack stands are rated appropriately and positioned on designated lift points only.
Never rely solely on the jack to support the vehicle. Always use properly rated jack stands.
The EDV 500 uses high-voltage battery systems. Avoid contact with orange high-voltage cables during wheel service.
ℹ️EDV 500 wheel lug nut torque specification must be verified in service manual as database does not contain this specification. Typical commercial EV spec is 130-150 ft-lbs.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level, solid surface and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure vehicle is in Park mode and powered off completely
  3. Chock wheels that will remain on ground during service
  4. Locate and identify proper jacking points per Rivian EDV service manual
  5. Verify wheel balancer is calibrated and tire mounting machine is operational
  6. Record current tire pressures and note any existing balance weights for reference
  7. Loosen all lug nuts 1/4 turn while wheels are still on ground

Procedure

  1. 1
Raise and secure front of vehicle
Position floor jack under front jacking point per service manual. Raise vehicle until front wheels are off ground. Place jack stands under designated lift points on front subframe. Lower vehicle onto jack stands and verify stability before proceeding.
  2. 2
    Remove front wheels
Remove lug nuts completely and set aside in clean location. Remove both front wheels and place on clean surface. Mark each wheel with position (LF, RF) using chalk or tape for proper reinstallation.
  3. 3
Raise and secure rear of vehicle
Raise front of vehicle slightly with jack, remove front jack stands, and lower front wheels back to ground. Move to rear and position jack under rear jacking point. Raise rear until wheels are clear. Install jack stands under rear lift points and lower vehicle onto stands.
  4. 4
    Remove rear wheels
Remove rear lug nuts and wheels. Mark wheels with position (LR, RR). Inspect all four wheels for damage, bends, or cracks while removed.
  5. 5
    Remove existing balance weights
Using wheel weight pliers or scraper, remove all existing balance weights from each wheel. Clean weight mounting areas on wheel rim thoroughly with wire brush and compressed air to ensure new weights will adhere properly.
  6. 6
    Mount first wheel on balancer
Select appropriate wheel centering cone for EDV 500 wheel bore. Mount wheel securely on balancer spindle. Enter wheel dimensions (diameter and width) into balancer computer. Lower hood and initiate spin cycle.
Ensure wheel is properly centered and secured before spinning to prevent damage to wheel or balancer.
  7. 7
    Apply balance weights
After balancer completes measurement, note indicated weight amounts and positions. Apply adhesive or clip-on weights at exact locations indicated on wheel rim. Verify weights are secure and properly seated.
  8. 8
    Verify balance
Re-spin wheel on balancer to verify balance is within acceptable tolerance (typically less than 0.25 oz residual imbalance). If out of tolerance, adjust weight placement and re-check. Repeat until proper balance is achieved.
  9. 9
    Balance remaining three wheels
Repeat steps 6-8 for each remaining wheel. Maintain wheel position marking to ensure correct reinstallation. Document final balance readings for each wheel position for service records.
  10. 10
Inspect and prepare tires for reinstallation
Check tire pressure on all four tires and adjust to specification on door jamb placard (typically 60-70 PSI for commercial EDV). Inspect valve stems for damage and replace caps if worn. Clean wheel mounting surfaces on hubs with wire brush.
  11. 11
    Reinstall rear wheels
Mount rear wheels (LR and RR) to their original positions. Thread all lug nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading. Using star pattern, tighten lug nuts snug but not to final torque while vehicle is on jack stands.
  12. 12
Lower rear and reinstall front wheels
Raise rear slightly with jack, remove jack stands, and lower vehicle to ground. Move to front, raise vehicle, remove jack stands, and mount front wheels (LF and RF) to original positions. Hand-thread lug nuts and snug in star pattern.
  13. 13
Torque all lug nuts to specification
With all wheels on ground, use torque wrench to tighten all lug nuts to manufacturer specification in proper star pattern. Make at least two complete passes around each wheel to ensure even clamping force. Verify final torque on all lug nuts.
ℹ️Consult Rivian EDV service manual for exact lug nut torque specification. Typical specification for commercial electric vans is 130-150 ft-lbs.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all lug nuts are torqued to proper specification in star pattern
  2. Double-check that all wheels are mounted in their original positions
  3. Verify tire pressures match door jamb specification
  4. Replace any damaged or missing valve stem caps

Verification

  • Test drive vehicle at various speeds (25-65 mph) to verify vibration has been eliminated
  • Listen and feel for any unusual vibrations through steering wheel or seat
  • After 50-100 miles of driving, re-torque all lug nuts to specification
  • Verify all balance weights remain securely attached after test drive
  • Confirm tire pressures remain stable and no air leaks are present
