This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the horn assembly on a 2024 Rivian EDV 500, including electrical connector access and mounting hardware.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery before beginning work to prevent airbag deployment or electrical shorts
ℹ️The EDV 500 uses a dual-horn system; verify which horn requires replacement before ordering parts
⚠Do not activate horn button while horn is disconnected as this may set a fault code in the body control module

Parts
- Horn assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Horn mounting bracket (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure ignition is off and key fob is at least 15 feet away from vehicle
- Open hood and locate 12V auxiliary battery in front compartment
- Disconnect negative terminal on 12V auxiliary battery and wait 2 minutes for system discharge
- Identify horn location behind front bumper cover on driver side (low tone) and passenger side (high tone)
- Prepare clean workspace for removed trim panels
Procedure
- 1Access front bumper areaRemove the plastic access panel in the wheel well liner on the side requiring horn replacement. This provides access to the horn mounting area without removing the entire bumper cover. Use panel removal tool to release retaining clips starting from the rear edge and working forward.
- 2Locate horn assemblyIdentify the horn assembly mounted to the frame rail behind the bumper cover. The driver side horn (low tone) is mounted near the driver side crash bar, while the passenger side horn (high tone) is mounted symmetrically on the opposite side. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reassembly.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the horn electrical connector and pull firmly to disconnect. Inspect connector for corrosion or damage. If connector shows signs of water intrusion, apply dielectric grease during reassembly.
- 4Remove horn mounting fastenerUsing a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the horn to the mounting bracket on the frame rail. Support the horn with one hand while removing the fastener to prevent it from falling.
- 5Extract horn from vehicleCarefully maneuver the horn assembly out through the wheel well access opening. The horn may need to be rotated or angled to clear the bumper support structure and wiring harness routing clips.
- 6Inspect mounting bracket and wiringExamine the mounting bracket for damage, rust, or loose mounting to the frame rail. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing, cuts, or heat damage. Check that the connector pins are not bent or corroded. Replace any damaged components.
- 7Test new horn (optional)Before installation, temporarily reconnect the 12V battery and test the new horn by briefly touching the connector terminals to verify proper operation. This confirms the replacement part is functional before completing installation. Disconnect battery again before proceeding.
- 8Position new horn assemblyRoute the new horn through the wheel well access opening and align it with the mounting bracket on the frame rail. Ensure the electrical connector orientation matches the harness routing and that no wires are pinched or kinked.
- 9Secure horn to mounting bracketInstall the 10mm mounting bolt through the horn bracket and tighten firmly. The horn should be solidly mounted with no movement or vibration. Ensure proper ground contact between the horn mounting bracket and frame rail.
- 10Connect electrical harnessPush the electrical connector onto the horn terminal until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently pull on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Apply dielectric grease to the connector if operating in harsh environments.
- 11Reinstall wheel well liner panelPosition the wheel well access panel and press firmly to engage all retaining clips. Verify all clips are fully seated and the panel is flush with surrounding surfaces. Replace any damaged clips with new ones from the trim clip assortment.
- 12Reconnect auxiliary batteryReconnect the negative terminal on the 12V auxiliary battery and tighten securely. The vehicle systems will perform a brief initialization when power is restored.
Reassembly
- Verify all wheel well liner panels are properly secured with all clips engaged
- Ensure no tools or parts were left in the bumper cavity or wheel well area
- Check that wiring harness is properly routed and secured away from moving components and heat sources
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify no warning lights related to vehicle safety systems appear on instrument cluster
- Press horn button on steering wheel briefly to confirm horn operates with proper tone and volume
- If dual-horn system, verify both high and low tone horns sound together when activated
- Perform a visual inspection under the vehicle to confirm no loose parts or fasteners
- Clear any diagnostic trouble codes related to horn circuit using Rivian service software if necessary
- Test horn operation several times to ensure consistent performance
