Parts

  • Windshield washer pump × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Washer pump grommet seal × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Hose clamps (if damaged) × 2 — Worm gear style, 12-20mm

Fluids

  • Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground with parking brake engaged and ignition off
  2. Allow vehicle to sit for at least 5 minutes to ensure all systems are powered down
  3. Open the front cargo hood (frunk) fully and secure with the prop if necessary
  4. Place drain pan and towels under the work area to catch spilled washer fluid
  5. Have replacement parts ready and inspect the new washer pump for proper fit and connection type

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the washer fluid reservoir
The washer fluid reservoir is located in the driver's side front compartment behind the frunk liner. Remove the plastic push clips securing the front inner fender liner or access panel using the trim removal tool. On the EDV 500, the reservoir is accessed from the driver's side wheel well area or through a service panel in the frunk. Fold back or remove the liner to expose the reservoir and pump assembly.
  2. 2
    Drain the washer fluid reservoir
Position the drain pan beneath the reservoir. Locate the drain hose at the bottom of the reservoir (small diameter hose with a cap or plug). Remove the drain cap or disconnect the hose to allow fluid to drain completely into the pan. If no drain is present, use a fluid transfer pump to remove as much fluid as possible through the filler neck. Save clean fluid for reuse if desired.
  3. 3
    Disconnect the electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the washer pump motor, typically at the bottom or side of the reservoir. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the pump terminals. On Rivian vehicles, this is usually a 2-pin weatherpack-style connector. Ensure you do not pull on the wires themselves.
  4. 4
    Disconnect the outlet hose
Identify the outlet hose that runs from the pump to the windshield washer nozzles. If equipped with a hose clamp, use needle nose pliers to squeeze and slide the clamp back away from the pump fitting. Pull the hose straight off the pump outlet barb. Some residual fluid will drain from the hose, so have towels ready.
  5. 5
Remove the washer pump from reservoir
The washer pump is typically press-fit into a grommet in the reservoir. Grasp the pump body firmly and twist counterclockwise while pulling outward to break the seal. The pump should release from the grommet with moderate force. If stuck, carefully use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry around the edge of the grommet, being careful not to damage the reservoir.
  6. 6
Inspect and clean the mounting location
Remove the old grommet from the reservoir if it remains in place. Inspect the reservoir opening for cracks, debris, or damage. Clean the mounting surface with a shop towel and remove any dirt or old sealant. Check the inside of the reservoir for debris that could clog the new pump and clean if necessary.
  7. 7
    Install the new pump grommet
Take the new grommet seal and press it into the reservoir opening. Ensure it seats fully and evenly in the mounting hole. The grommet should be flush with the reservoir surface. Applying a small amount of soapy water to the grommet can ease installation and prevent tearing.
  8. 8
    Install the new washer pump
Lubricate the pump inlet with a drop of washer fluid or soapy water. Align the pump with the grommet opening and press firmly while twisting clockwise. Push until the pump body seats fully against the grommet and the pump cannot be easily pulled out. Verify the pump is oriented correctly with the outlet pointing toward the hose routing path.
  9. 9
    Reconnect the outlet hose
Push the outlet hose firmly onto the pump outlet barb until it bottoms out. Slide the hose clamp into position approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the hose, over the barbed fitting. If the original clamp is damaged, replace it with a new worm-gear style clamp and tighten securely by hand.
  10. 10
    Reconnect the electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the pump terminals and push straight on until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place. Ensure no wires are pinched or strained.
  11. 11
    Refill the washer fluid reservoir
Using a funnel, pour windshield washer fluid into the reservoir through the filler neck. Fill to the full line, approximately 3.5 quarts capacity. Do not overfill. Use fluid appropriate for the climate conditions.
  12. 12
    Test the washer pump operation
Turn the vehicle ignition to ON position (do not start motors). Activate the windshield washer system using the stalk control. Verify that fluid sprays properly from all nozzles and that the pump operates smoothly without unusual noise. Check for leaks at the pump connection points and hose fittings. Run the washer for 10-15 seconds to purge air from the lines.
  13. 13
    Reinstall access panels
Once operation is verified and no leaks are present, reinstall the inner fender liner or access panel. Secure all push clips and fasteners in their original locations. Ensure the panel is properly seated and does not interfere with any moving components.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all trim panels and fasteners are properly secured and flush with surrounding surfaces
  2. Wipe down any spilled washer fluid from painted surfaces to prevent streaking
  3. Check washer fluid level one final time and top off if needed
  4. Close the frunk and verify it latches securely

Verification

  • Activate the washer system multiple times and confirm strong, consistent spray pattern from all nozzles
  • Listen for normal pump operation with no grinding, whining, or unusual noises
  • Inspect all connection points for leaks while the pump is running
  • Verify the pump shuts off properly when the washer control is released
  • Check that washer fluid level remains stable after testing with no signs of leakage
  • Test both windshield washer functions (if equipped with multiple spray modes) to ensure full system operation
