Preparation

Procedure

   Remove the instrument cluster surround bezel. Remove upper dashboard trim screws (typically T25) accessible from above. Gently pull the bezel forward, being careful not to damage the digital display connections. Disconnect any ambient lighting or sensor connectors behind the bezel.
   ⚠The digital instrument cluster is sensitive to impact. Support the bezel carefully and do not allow it to hang by wiring harnesses

   Access HVAC Control Module Area
   Remove the HVAC control module faceplate by removing retaining screws and carefully pulling the assembly forward. Disconnect the main electrical connector from the back of the control module. This provides access to the ductwork behind the dashboard.

   Locate Blend Door Actuator
   Using a work light, identify the blend door actuator location on the HVAC housing. In the EDV 500, the actuator is typically located on the driver's side of the HVAC box, accessible from below the instrument panel area. It is a small rectangular motorized unit with a gear mechanism visible on one end and an electrical connector.

   Disconnect Actuator Electrical Connector
   Press the locking tab on the blend door actuator electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the actuator. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Note the connector orientation and any alignment features for reinstallation.

   Remove Actuator Mounting Fasteners
   Remove the actuator mounting screws (typically two or three small bolts or screws) securing the actuator to the HVAC housing. These may be Phillips head or Torx fasteners. Keep track of any spacers or washers under the fastener heads. Use extensions as needed to reach fasteners in tight spaces.

   Remove Old Blend Door Actuator
   Gently pull the actuator away from the HVAC housing. The actuator shaft may be engaged with the blend door mechanism, so a slight twisting motion while pulling may be necessary. Do not force it. Inspect the blend door linkage through the opening to ensure it is not damaged or binding.
   ⚠If the actuator does not release easily, verify all fasteners are removed and check for hidden clips. Forcing the actuator can break the blend door mechanism inside the HVAC box

   Inspect Blend Door Operation
   With the actuator removed, manually move the blend door shaft to verify smooth operation throughout its full range of motion. The door should move freely without binding or excessive resistance. If binding is present, the blend door itself may be damaged and will require HVAC box disassembly.

    Install New Blend Door Actuator
    Position the new actuator onto the blend door shaft, ensuring the actuator gear properly engages with the door linkage. The actuator should seat flush against the HVAC housing. Align mounting holes and install mounting fasteners finger-tight initially. Verify proper engagement before fully tightening fasteners in a cross pattern to prevent binding.

    Reconnect Electrical Connector
    Connect the electrical connector to the new blend door actuator, ensuring it clicks into place and the locking tab engages fully. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector body.

    Perform Initial Function Test
    Temporarily reconnect the 12V battery. Power on the vehicle and access the HVAC system. Cycle through temperature settings from full cold to full hot, listening for smooth actuator operation without clicking, grinding, or hesitation. If abnormal sounds are present, recheck actuator installation before proceeding.

    Using a Rivian-compatible diagnostic scan tool, perform HVAC actuator calibration procedure.     Reinstall Dashboard Components
    Disconnect 12V battery again for safety. Reinstall all dashboard components in reverse order of removal: HVAC control module assembly, instrument cluster bezel, center console trim, and lower dashboard panel. Ensure all electrical connectors are properly seated and all trim clips are fully engaged. Replace any broken clips with new ones.

    Final System Verification
    Reconnect 12V battery. Power on vehicle and perform complete HVAC function test. Verify proper airflow temperature control at all temperature settings, proper airflow direction at all vent positions, and smooth operation without unusual noises. Test in both manual and automatic climate control modes if equipped.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trim panels are properly aligned before pressing clips into place to avoid stress cracks
2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before final assembly
3. Check that no tools or fasteners were left in the dashboard cavity
4. Confirm all dashboard controls and switches function properly after reassembly

Verification

• Start vehicle and set HVAC to maximum cold with fan on high. Verify cold air is produced within 30 seconds
• Set HVAC to maximum hot. Verify warm/hot air is produced as vehicle warms up or from battery/motor heat
• Cycle temperature control through full range and listen for smooth actuator operation without clicking or binding
• Verify no HVAC-related diagnostic trouble codes are present using scan tool
• Test airflow direction controls to ensure blend door operation does not affect mode door function
• Verify all dashboard trim panels are secure with no rattles or gaps
