This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the combination switch (turn signal/wiper stalk assembly) on the steering column of a 2025 Rivian EDV 500.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the 12V battery and wait at least 2 minutes before beginning work to prevent airbag deployment and electrical system damage
⚠The combination switch contains electronic components sensitive to static discharge. Ground yourself before handling internal connectors
⚠Do not force steering column covers or clips as they are easily damaged. Use proper trim removal tools
ℹ️This vehicle may require an OEM scan tool to clear fault codes and recalibrate steering angle sensor after combination switch replacement

Parts
- Combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure high voltage system is in service mode (if applicable for your work)
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes minimum
- Set steering wheel to centered position
- Lower steering column to lowest position and telescope fully out for access
- Gather all necessary tools and replacement parts
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverUsing trim removal tools, carefully release the lower steering column cover retaining clips. There are typically 3-4 clips around the perimeter. Pull the lower cover down and away from the column, being mindful of any wire harnesses that may be clipped to it.
- 2Remove upper steering column coverLocate the T20 Torx screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2 screws at the bottom edge). Remove these screws and lift the upper cover up and off the steering column. Set aside with hardware.
- 3Identify combination switch mountingWith covers removed, locate the combination switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. Identify the electrical connectors (typically 2-3 multi-pin connectors) and the mounting bracket secured with T25 Torx screws.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorsUsing the appropriate electrical connector release tool, depress the locking tabs on each connector attached to the combination switch. There are typically two main connectors: one for turn signals/hazards and one for wiper/washer controls. Carefully pull connectors straight back to avoid pin damage. Note connector orientations for reassembly.
- 5Remove combination switch mounting screwsUsing a T25 Torx driver, remove the two mounting screws securing the combination switch bracket to the steering column housing. Support the switch assembly while removing the final screw to prevent it from falling.
- 6Remove combination switch assemblyCarefully slide the combination switch assembly straight back away from the steering column. It should separate from the column shaft without excessive force. If resistance is felt, verify all mounting screws and any additional clips are released.
- 7Inspect steering column and connectorsBefore installing the new switch, inspect the steering column mounting points for any damage or debris. Check all electrical connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or damage. Clean connector terminals with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
- 8Install new combination switch assemblyPosition the new combination switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning the mounting bracket holes with the column housing threaded inserts. Ensure the switch actuator properly engages with the column shaft mechanism. Slide forward until fully seated.
- 9Install mounting screwsInsert and hand-tighten both T25 Torx mounting screws. Tighten screws in an alternating pattern to ensure even seating. Tighten firmly but do not over-torque the plastic housing threads.
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect each electrical connector to the combination switch, ensuring proper orientation and alignment. Press firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 11Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover over the column and align it properly. Install the T20 Torx screws and tighten securely. Snap the lower cover into place, ensuring all retaining clips engage properly and the cover is flush around its perimeter.
- 12Reconnect 12V batteryReconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal. The vehicle may require a few moments to initialize electrical systems.
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column covers are properly seated and all clips engaged
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the steering column area
- Check that combination switch stalks move freely through all positions without binding
Verification
- Power on the vehicle to accessory mode and test all combination switch functions: left/right turn signals, high/low beams, flash-to-pass, windshield wipers (all speeds), windshield washer
- Verify turn signal self-cancellation operates correctly after steering wheel rotation
- Check instrument cluster for any new warning lights or fault codes related to the combination switch
- Test hazard lights function with button press
- If fault codes are present, use an OEM scan tool to clear codes and perform any required steering angle sensor calibration
- Conduct a brief test drive to verify all combination switch functions operate normally under driving conditions
