Parts
- Headlight switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Trim panel clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and ensure it is in Park mode
- Power off the vehicle completely using the center display
- Open the front trunk (frunk) to access the 12V battery compartment
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Ensure all tools and replacement parts are readily accessible
- Take photos of the dashboard area before disassembly for reference during reassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverLocate the lower steering column cover trim panel beneath the steering wheel. Use the trim removal tool to carefully release the retaining clips starting from the bottom edge. There are typically 4-6 clips securing this panel. Pull the panel downward and away from the column once all clips are released.
- 2Remove upper steering column coverLocate the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom of the upper steering column cover. Remove both screws and set aside. Grasp the upper cover and lift upward to disengage the clips at the rear of the cover. Carefully pull the cover toward the rear of the vehicle to clear the steering wheel adjustment lever.
- 3Remove driver side lower dash panelLocate the driver side lower dash panel to the left of the steering column. Remove the two T25 Torx screws securing the panel (one near the door jamb, one near the center). Use trim removal tools to release the remaining clips along the top edge of the panel. Carefully pull the panel away from the dash.
- 4Disconnect headlight switch electrical connectorLocate the headlight switch on the left side of the steering column. Identify the main electrical connector on the rear of the switch assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector while pulling it straight back away from the switch. If connector is difficult to access, use needle nose pliers to depress the locking tab.
- 5Remove headlight switch mounting fastenersLocate the two T20 Torx screws securing the headlight switch assembly to the steering column bracket. These are typically positioned at the top and bottom of the switch housing. Remove both screws completely and retain for installation of the new switch.
- 6Remove headlight switch assemblyWith the fasteners removed and connector disconnected, carefully pull the headlight switch assembly straight out from the steering column bracket. There may be a small alignment tab at the bottom of the switch that needs to clear the bracket opening. Note the orientation of the switch for proper installation of the replacement.
- 7Inspect and clean connectorExamine the electrical connector and wiring harness for any signs of corrosion, damage, or burnt contacts. If contacts appear dirty or oxidized, spray with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry completely. Check connector pins for proper alignment and tension. If using a multimeter, verify continuity on key circuits before installing new switch.
- 8Install new headlight switch assemblyPosition the new headlight switch assembly with the correct orientation, aligning the bottom tab with the slot in the steering column bracket. Push the switch firmly into position ensuring it seats completely flush against the bracket. Install the two T20 Torx mounting screws and tighten securely by hand until snug (do not overtighten plastic housing).
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the rear of the new headlight switch assembly, ensuring the connector is properly oriented with the keying feature. Push the connector firmly onto the switch until you hear and feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked.
- 10Reinstall dash panels and column coversReinstall the driver side lower dash panel by aligning the clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage, then install the two T25 Torx screws. Position the upper steering column cover over the column, engaging the rear clips first, then pressing down until all clips snap into place. Install the two T20 Torx screws. Finally, install the lower steering column cover by aligning the clips and pressing upward until all clips engage.
- 11Reconnect 12V batteryReturn to the frunk and reconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery. Ensure the terminal is clean and the connection is tight. Close the frunk.
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are properly seated with no gaps or misalignment
- Ensure all Torx screws are present and tightened appropriately
- Check that no tools or parts were left in the dash cavity
- Confirm all electrical connectors are fully locked and secured
Verification
- Power on the vehicle using the center display
- Test the headlight switch through all positions: off, parking lights, low beams, high beams, and auto mode if equipped
- Verify that all headlight functions operate correctly including turn signal stalk functions if integrated
- Check for any warning messages on the instrument cluster related to exterior lighting
- Test the headlight switch with the vehicle in both Park and Drive modes to ensure proper operation
- Exit the vehicle and visually confirm all exterior lights respond correctly to switch positions
- If equipped, verify automatic headlight operation by covering the ambient light sensor on the dash
