Replace a single rear brake rotor on a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Dual Motor. The Cybertruck uses large rear rotors with an integrated parking brake function in the caliper; service-mode release via the touchscreen is required before disassembly.

Warnings

⚠️The Cybertruck uses a 48V low-voltage architecture, NOT 12V. Use only 48V-rated tools and chargers on the LV system. Do not attempt to jump or charge it as a 12V battery.
⚠️Do not touch, cut, or pierce any orange high-voltage cable. The Cybertruck HV battery is 800V — contact is lethal.
The electric parking brake (EPB) is integrated into the rear caliper. It MUST be placed in service/transport mode via the touchscreen before retracting the rear caliper pistons. Forcing the piston without service mode can damage the EPB actuator.
Stainless steel exoskeleton panels scratch and dent more easily than they appear. Protect fender edges with covers; do not lean tools or rotors against bodywork.
Air suspension: enter Jack Mode via the touchscreen before lifting. Failure to do so may cause the suspension to attempt to re-level while on stands.

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the low-voltage battery. NOTE: Cybertruck uses a 48V LV system — locate the manufacturer-specified LV disconnect point and follow the proper 48V isolation procedure (do not treat as a standard 12V battery).
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Before powering down: on the touchscreen, enable Jack Mode (Service > Suspension) so the air suspension does not re-level on stands.
  7. Before powering down: enable Brake Service Mode / Transport Mode on the touchscreen to retract the electric parking brake actuator on the rear calipers.
  8. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts a quarter turn while the vehicle is still on the ground.

    With the EPB in service mode, gently retract the caliper pistons using a piston compression tool. Do NOT force the pistons — if they will not retract, stop and re-verify Brake Service Mode is active. Forcing them can destroy the EPB drive.
    Never use a C-clamp aggressively on an EPB-equipped rear caliper without service mode active.

    Remove caliper slide pin bolts
    Remove the two caliper guide/slide pin bolts securing the caliper body to the bracket. Support the caliper — do not let it hang by the brake hose or by the EPB wiring harness.

    Suspend caliper and remove pads
    Lift the caliper off the bracket and suspend it from a suspension component using a caliper hanger. Remove the brake pads from the bracket and inspect for wear; replace as a set if near service limit.
    Do not stress the EPB electrical harness — disconnect it at the inline connector if needed for slack rather than letting it bear caliper weight.

    Remove the two caliper bracket bolts that secure the bracket to the rear knuckle. These are high-torque fasteners; use a breaker bar. Set the bracket aside and inspect for cracks or corrosion.

    Remove the rotor retaining set screw from the rotor hat. If the screw is corroded or stripped, apply penetrating oil and use an impact driver — do not strike the rotor or hub with excessive force.

    Remove rotor
    Pull the rotor straight off the hub. If seized, thread two bolts evenly into the threaded jacking holes in the rotor hat (if equipped) to push the rotor off. Do NOT strike the rotor face with a steel hammer near the hub bearing or wheel speed sensor.
    Avoid contacting the wheel speed sensor / tone ring during rotor removal.

    Clean hub face
    Wire-brush the hub mounting face until it is clean, flat, and free of corrosion. Any rust or debris between the hub and rotor hat will cause runout and brake pulsation. Apply a very thin film of anti-seize ONLY to the center hub pilot — never on the friction surface or the flat mating face.

    Install new rotor
    Wipe the friction surfaces of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove shipping oil. Install the rotor onto the hub and secure with the rotor set screw.

    Inspect bracket bolt threads. Apply medium-strength threadlocker if specified by the service manual. Reinstall the caliper bracket to the knuckle and torque the bracket bolts.

    Install pads and caliper
    Install brake pads (with abutment clips/shims as removed) into the bracket. Lubricate the slide pins with silicone brake grease, slide the caliper over the pads, and install the slide pin bolts.

    Reconnect EPB harness (if disconnected)
    Reconnect the EPB connector at the caliper and re-secure any harness clips to their original routing. Verify the harness is clear of the rotor and suspension travel.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the rear wheel. Snug lug nuts in a star pattern by hand.
  2. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  3. Final-torque the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern.
  4. Reconnect the 48V low-voltage battery using the proper Cybertruck procedure.
  5. Power the vehicle on. On the touchscreen, exit Brake Service Mode and exit Jack Mode.
  6. With the vehicle still stationary and in P, press the brake pedal firmly multiple times until pedal feel is firm — this seats the caliper pistons against the new pad/rotor.
  7. Cycle the EPB on and off several times via the touchscreen / shift stalk to confirm the rear caliper actuator engages and releases normally.

Verification

  • Confirm no brake-related alerts on the touchscreen (ABS, EPB, Brake System).
  • At very low speed in an empty area, perform several gentle stops from 5–10 mph to verify pedal feel and no pulling.
  • Bed-in the new rotor per the rotor manufacturer's procedure (typically a series of moderate decelerations from ~35 mph to ~5 mph, without coming to a complete stop, to deposit an even pad transfer layer).
  • After bed-in, recheck wheel lug torque in a star pattern.
  • Visually inspect for any brake fluid leakage at the caliper (none expected — no hydraulic line was opened).
