Replace the exterior door handle assembly on a 2024 Model S Long Range. Model S uses flush-mount auto-presenting handles; the door trim panel must be removed to access the handle assembly from inside the door.

Warnings

⚠️Do NOT touch or cut any orange cable inside the vehicle. Although this job is on the door, wiring harnesses can route near HV — if you see an orange cable, STOP.
Model S body panels are aluminum. Do not strike or pry aggressively against the door skin — it dents and creases easily and cannot be repaired with conventional steel-body techniques.
The 2021+ Model S uses auto-presenting handles with a motor, position sensor, and capacitive touch electronics. Disconnect the 12V battery before unplugging the handle connector to avoid module faults logged in the BCM.
Door is unlocked electronically — with the 12V disconnected, the door cannot be opened from outside. Open the door BEFORE disconnecting 12V, or use the manual interior release.
ℹ️Order the handle by VIN. Paint codes vary, and front vs. rear handles are not interchangeable.

Tools required

Plastic trim removal tools (non-marring)Essential
Torx bit set (T20/T25/T30)Essential
Metric socket setEssential
1/4" drive torque wrench (4–25 Nm range)Essential
Painter's tape (to protect paint at handle opening)Essential
Microfiber cloth and blue painter's tape for door panel protection
Small flashlight or headlamp
10mm wrench for 12V battery terminalEssential

Parts

  • Exterior door handle assembly (auto-presenting, color-matched to VIN) × 1 — Tesla Model S 2021+ refresh exterior handle — order by VIN for correct paint code and side (LH/RH, front/rear)
  • Door panel retaining clips (replacement set) × 1 — Generic door panel push-pin clips — replace any broken on removal

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Open the affected door and prop it open BEFORE disconnecting 12V (otherwise exterior handle will not present).
  4. Open the frunk and disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (negative terminal first) located under the nose cowl panel. Wait 2 minutes before continuing.
  5. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  6. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  7. Verify you have the correct replacement handle: side (LH/RH), position (front/rear), and paint code matching the VIN.
  8. Apply painter's tape around the handle perimeter on the exterior door skin to protect paint during removal.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove interior door trim panel
Using a non-marring plastic trim tool, gently pry the interior door trim panel free from its retaining clips around the perimeter. Start at the lower rear corner and work around. Lift the panel slightly to release it from the upper window seal lip. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors for the window switch, speaker, and ambient lighting before fully removing the panel.
Aluminum door — do not pry against the outer skin. Pry only against the inner door frame structure.
  2. 2
Remove vapor barrier / sound deadening
Carefully peel back the vapor barrier from the inner door, preserving the butyl adhesive bead so it can be re-seated. Fold and tape the barrier out of the way. Inspect for any loose wiring or harness retainers and note their original routing for reassembly.
  3. 3
Locate and access the exterior handle assembly
Looking through the large service opening in the inner door panel, locate the exterior handle assembly mounted to the outer door skin. Identify the electrical connector (handle motor + capacitive sensor), the latch linkage rod or cable, and the mounting fasteners that secure the handle assembly to the door.
  4. 4
    Disconnect handle wiring and linkage
Disconnect the electrical connector from the handle assembly by depressing the locking tab. Detach the lock/latch linkage rod from its retaining clip on the latch mechanism. Set the clip aside in a clean location.

    Lock Rod Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove handle mounting hardware
Support the exterior handle from outside the door with one hand (or have an assistant hold it). Through the inner door access opening, remove the handle assembly mounting bolts and any retention bracket bolts securing the handle to the outer skin. Note bolt locations and lengths.
Do not let the handle drop against the painted door skin once fasteners are removed.

    Bracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove exterior handle assembly
From outside the vehicle, carefully withdraw the handle assembly straight out of the door skin opening. Feed any pigtail harness through the door opening as you remove the assembly. Inspect the door skin opening seal/gasket for damage and replace if torn.
  7. 7
Transfer trim/cap if required and prep new handle
Compare the new handle to the original. If the replacement is supplied without an end cap, lock cylinder cover, or trim accent, transfer those parts from the original. Verify the presenting motor moves freely by hand and the capacitive sensor area is clean.

    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Install new handle assembly
Feed the new handle's harness pigtail into the door opening and seat the handle into the outer skin, ensuring the gasket sits flush around the entire perimeter. Hold the handle in place from outside while starting all mounting fasteners by hand to avoid cross-threading the captive nuts in the aluminum door structure.
Cross-threading into the aluminum door substructure can ruin the door — start every fastener by hand.
  9. 9
    Torque handle and bracket fasteners
Torque the handle mounting bolts and any bracket bolts to specification using a calibrated torque wrench. Confirm the handle sits flush with the door skin and is not cocked.

    Handle Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
    Bracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect linkage and electrical
Reattach the latch linkage rod to the latch and secure with its retaining clip. Reconnect the handle electrical connector until it clicks. Verify both are fully seated.
    Torque spec
    Lock Rod Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Re-seat vapor barrier
Press the vapor barrier back onto the butyl adhesive bead, ensuring a continuous seal. A poor seal here causes wind noise and water intrusion into the cabin.
  12. 12
    Reinstall door trim panel
Reconnect the window switch, speaker, and ambient light harness connectors. Hook the panel onto the upper window seal lip first, align all clip locations, then press firmly along the perimeter to seat each retaining clip. Reinstall any cover screws to the manufacturer-specified positions.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify door trim panel is fully seated — no gaps along upper or lower edges.
  2. Reconnect 12V battery (positive first, then negative). Torque battery terminals to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
  3. Close frunk.
  4. Allow vehicle to wake and complete its boot sequence (~30–60 seconds) before testing handle function.

Verification

  • Approach vehicle with paired key fob/phone key — exterior handle should auto-present within ~1 second of detection.
  • Touch the handle capacitive sensor area — door should unlock and open smoothly.
  • From inside, operate the electronic door release — door should open and handle should retract correctly after closing.
  • Lock the vehicle via the touchscreen and confirm the handle retracts flush.
  • Check the touchscreen for any door, BCM, or handle-related alerts. Clear any stored fault by allowing the car to cycle through sleep, or have a Tesla Service Center clear codes if persistent.
  • Drive at highway speed with windows up and listen for wind noise around the repaired door — indicates vapor barrier or handle gasket sealing issues.
  • Spray water around the handle perimeter and check inside the door for leaks before final trim reinstallation if water intrusion is suspected.
