Replacement of the front windshield wiper motor assembly on a 2024 Tesla Model S Plaid. The wiper motor and linkage are accessed by removing the cowl panel beneath the windshield after removing the wiper arms.
Warnings
⚠️Do NOT touch, cut, or pierce any orange high-voltage cable. If you encounter one, stop work immediately.
⚠Aluminum body panels — do not strike with a hammer or pry aggressively against painted edges. Damage is expensive and cannot be MIG-welded.
⚠Wiper arms are under spring tension and use a tapered shaft. Use a proper wiper arm puller — prying can bend the arm or crack the windshield.
⚠The 12V/16V battery is in the frunk under the nose cowl on Model S Plaid. Disconnect before working near any electrical connector to prevent ECU damage or wiper auto-park activation.
ℹ️Mark the wiper arm-to-windshield position with tape before removal so you can reinstall at the correct park position.

Parts
- Front wiper motor assembly (with linkage, if supplied as unit) × 1 — Manufacturer-specified Model S Plaid 2024 front wiper motor — verify by VIN
- Cowl panel clips/retainers (often single-use) × 1 — OEM cowl retainer clips as required
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Open the frunk and disconnect the low-voltage battery (12V AGM or 16V Li-ion located under the frunk nose cowl panel on 2024 Model S Plaid). Refer to architecture notes — verify which battery your VIN has before disconnecting.
- Do NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal. If you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Lift the wiper arms to the service position (Tesla touchscreen: Controls > Service > Wiper Service Mode) BEFORE disconnecting 12V if possible, or manually position arms after disconnection.
- Mark the resting position of each wiper arm on the windshield with low-tack tape.
- Have the replacement wiper motor assembly on hand and verify it matches the original by connector style and mounting pattern.
Procedure
- 1Place wipers in service positionUsing the touchscreen Service menu, select Wiper Service Mode to move the arms upright off the cowl. If the 12V is already disconnected, manually lift the arms after removing the retaining nut covers — but powered service mode is preferred.
- 2Remove wiper armsPry up the small plastic cap at the base of each wiper arm. Remove the retaining nut. Use a wiper arm puller to release the arm from the tapered splined shaft. Do not pry against the glass or paint. Set arms aside, keeping driver and passenger sides identified.⚠Never strike the wiper arm with a hammer — risk of cracking the windshield.
- 3Remove cowl panelRelease the cowl panel retainers along the base of the windshield using a plastic trim tool. The Model S cowl is multi-piece with rubber weather seal — work gently to avoid breaking clips. Disconnect the washer fluid hose at any inline connector before fully removing the panel. Lift the cowl panel away and store on a soft surface.⚠Aluminum hood and fender edges are easily scratched — protect with fender covers.
- 4Disconnect wiper motor electrical connectorLocate the wiper motor electrical connector on the motor housing. Release the locking tab and unplug. Inspect the connector for corrosion or damage.
- 5Remove wiper motor and linkage assemblyOn Model S, the wiper motor is typically supplied as an assembly with the linkage frame bolted to the body in the cowl tray. Remove the bracket/mounting bolts securing the linkage frame to the chassis. Support the assembly while removing the last bolt, then lift the entire motor-and-linkage out as a unit.Torque specBracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Transfer linkage if requiredIf the replacement part is motor-only (not a complete assembly), mark the linkage crank arm orientation relative to the motor output shaft, then remove the crank nut and separate the motor from the linkage. Transfer to the new motor in the SAME orientation — incorrect timing will cause the wipers to park in the wrong position or strike the A-pillar trim.⚠Wiper park position is determined by motor-to-linkage timing. Mismatched timing can drive the blades off the glass.
- 7Install new wiper motor assemblyPosition the new assembly into the cowl tray. Hand-start all mounting bolts before final tightening. Torque the bracket/mounting bolts to specification.Torque specBracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorPlug in the wiper motor connector until the lock tab clicks fully. Verify the connector is fully seated — a loose connector will throw a wiper fault on the touchscreen.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the cowl panel, reconnecting the washer hose before fully seating. Replace any damaged clips with new retainers.
- Reinstall the wiper arms onto the splined shafts, aligning to your tape marks. Install the retaining nuts and torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. Snap the plastic caps back over the nuts.
- Reconnect the 12V/16V low-voltage battery. Torque the battery terminal bolt to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft) — do not overtighten.
- Close the frunk and ensure the latch is fully engaged.
Verification
- Power on the vehicle and exit Wiper Service Mode if it is still active.
- Spray washer fluid and cycle wipers through Low, High, and Intermittent settings — confirm smooth sweep and proper park position below the cowl.
- Activate auto-wipers (if equipped) briefly with a wet windshield to confirm rain sensor command reaches the motor.
- Check for fault messages on the touchscreen (Controls > Service or alerts banner). No wiper-related alerts should be present.
- Verify wiper blades park fully below the cowl line and do not contact the A-pillar trim at the end of the sweep.
- Note: This is not a scheduled maintenance item, but while the cowl is open it is a good opportunity to inspect the cabin air filter — Tesla recommends replacement every 2 years (3 years on HEPA-equipped Model S with Bioweapon Defense Mode).
