Warnings

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery in the frunk (under the frunk liner, similar location to Model S). Remove the negative terminal first and isolate it.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Disable Falcon Wing door operation if working with rear doors open, or close and lock them before starting — accidental cycling is a common injury source on Model X service.
  7. Move the driver's seat fully rearward and tilt the steering column up/away to gain access under the dash.
  8. Have the replacement switch on hand and confirm it matches the original before removal.

    Locate the brake light switch
    Lie or kneel in the driver footwell with a headlamp. The brake light switch is mounted to the brake pedal support bracket above the brake pedal arm, with its plunger contacting a tab on the pedal. Identify the electrical connector and the body of the switch before disturbing anything.

    Confirm 12V is disconnected
    Before unplugging the switch, verify the 12V battery negative is still isolated. The brake switch circuit is low-voltage, but disconnecting/reconnecting under power can set persistent fault codes that require a Tesla service tool to clear.
    If you skipped the 12V disconnect, stop and do it now. Do not unplug the switch with the vehicle awake.

    Disconnect the electrical connector
    Release the connector lock tab on the brake light switch harness plug and gently pull the connector straight off. Do not pry on the wires. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or signs of overheating before installing the new switch.

    Remove the old switch
    Tesla brake light switches in this generation typically use a quarter-turn bayonet/twist-lock retention into the pedal bracket (not a threaded body with a locknut). With the brake pedal at rest, rotate the switch body counterclockwise approximately a quarter turn to unlock it, then withdraw it from the bracket. If the switch in your vehicle uses a different retention method, follow the manufacturer-specified procedure — do not force it.
    Do not depress the brake pedal hard against the switch during removal — bending the pedal bracket tab will cause incorrect plunger preload on the new switch.

    Inspect the pedal bracket and contact surface
    With the switch out, inspect the pedal-arm contact pad/tab the plunger rides against. It should be clean, flat, and undamaged. Verify the bracket mounting hole is not elongated or cracked.

    Install the new switch
    Without pre-depressing the plunger, insert the new switch into the bracket in the unlocked orientation. Most self-adjusting Tesla-style switches set their own plunger depth on first pedal cycle — do NOT manually extend or compress the plunger before install, as this destroys the auto-adjust feature and the switch will read incorrectly.
    If the new switch came with a shipping clip or pre-set plunger, leave it in place per the manufacturer's instructions until the switch is locked into the bracket.

    Lock the switch into position
    Rotate the switch body clockwise approximately a quarter turn into its locked position until you feel the bayonet detent engage. The switch should not rotate freely afterward and should sit flush against the bracket.

    Reconnect the electrical connector
    Push the harness connector straight onto the switch until the lock tab clicks fully home. Tug lightly to confirm engagement. A partially seated connector is the #1 cause of intermittent brake-light/regen faults after this job.

    Reconnect the 12V battery
    Reinstall the 12V negative terminal in the frunk. Torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. Reinstall any frunk liner or covers removed for access.

Reassembly

  1. Confirm no tools or fasteners are left in the driver footwell.
  2. Return the steering column and driver seat to the user's preferred position (or let the driver profile auto-restore).
  3. Close the frunk and verify it latches fully on both sides.

Verification

  • Wake the vehicle. Confirm no new alerts appear on the touchscreen related to brakes, cruise control, or Autopilot.
  • With the vehicle in P and a helper watching the rear, press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights illuminate immediately and extinguish promptly when released.
  • Confirm the brake pedal triggers the expected behavior on the touchscreen: shifting out of P requires brake pedal — verify P-to-D works normally.
  • Test regenerative braking behavior: while driving at low speed, lifting off the accelerator should produce normal regen, and pressing the brake should illuminate the brake lights without disabling regen unexpectedly.
  • Engage Traffic-Aware Cruise Control on a safe road and confirm a brake pedal tap cleanly cancels TACC (this is a direct function of brake light switch input).
  • Note: while you have the car in for service, check the brake fluid service interval — Tesla recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years regardless of mileage. If due, schedule that service.
