Replacement of an interior door handle (electronic switch assembly) on a 2024 Tesla Model X. On Model X, the front doors and rear Falcon Wing doors use electronic interior release switches rather than mechanical handles, so the door card must be removed and the switch module replaced as a unit.
Warnings
⚠️Falcon Wing doors are powered and can move under their own actuators even with the vehicle 'off.' Before working on a rear door, place the door in service/maintenance mode via the touchscreen and physically support it. A closing Falcon door can crush hands and arms.
⚠The interior release is electronic and tied into the BCM/door control module. Do NOT operate the exterior or interior release with the door card disconnected and the door closed — you may be unable to exit. Work with the door open or use the mechanical emergency release if equipped (front doors only).
⚠Aluminum body and soft interior trim — do not pry against painted surfaces or strike with a hammer. Use plastic tools only and tape pry points.
ℹ️Some Model X interior switch assemblies are paired/coded to the vehicle. After replacement, a configuration or relearn via Tesla service tooling may be required if the switch does not function. If so, the vehicle must go to a Tesla-certified technician.
Tools required
Plastic trim removal/pry tool setEssential
Torx bit set (T20/T25/T30)Essential
Phillips and flat-blade screwdrivers
1/4" drive torque wrench (2-25 Nm range)Essential
Painter's tape (to protect paint and trim edges)
Microfiber towel / soft work surface for door panel
Insulated gloves and safety glasses
Parts
- Interior door release switch / handle assembly (manufacturer-specified for 2024 Model X, correct side and door — front vs. Falcon rear) × 1 — OEM Tesla replacement — verify by VIN at parts counter
- Replacement plastic trim clips (door card retainers, often single-use) × 1 — OEM-equivalent door panel clip set
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage the parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery in the frunk (negative terminal first). See architecture notes — 12V is located in the frunk on Model X.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Before disconnecting 12V: open the affected door fully. If working on a Falcon Wing rear door, first place the vehicle/door in service mode via the touchscreen and ensure the door is fully open and supported so it cannot drop or actuate.
- Lower the window approximately 25 mm (1 inch) before disconnecting 12V — this gives clearance for the door card during removal.
- Lay out a clean padded surface to set the door card on; have a small parts tray for screws and clips.
Procedure
- 1Place door in service positionOpen the affected door fully. For a Falcon Wing rear door, confirm service/maintenance mode is enabled and the door is mechanically held open. Confirm 12V is disconnected before proceeding.⚠️Never work under an unsupported Falcon Wing door.
- 2Remove visible fasteners from door trimLocate and remove any visible Torx or Phillips screws on the door card, including those hidden behind small trim caps near the armrest pull pocket and behind the interior release bezel. Use a plastic pick to lift the trim caps without scratching the surface. Keep fasteners organized by location.
- 3Release the door card from the door shellStarting at a lower corner, insert a plastic pry tool between the door card and the metal door shell and gently release each retaining clip working around the perimeter. Do not pry against painted surfaces. Lift the door card upward to disengage the upper window-belt hook, then tilt the top of the panel away from the door.⚠Clips frequently break — have replacement clips on hand. Do not force; locate each clip before pulling.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorsWith the panel tilted out, reach behind and disconnect the wiring harness connectors feeding the interior release switch, window switch pack, courtesy/puddle lighting, speaker, and any tweeter or ambient lighting connectors present. Press the locking tab fully before pulling — do not pull on wires. Disconnect any Bowden/mechanical emergency release cable if present (front doors typically have a mechanical backup cable; route note its position before unhooking from the clip).⚠On front doors, note the routing and end-fitting orientation of the mechanical emergency release cable (if equipped) before unhooking. Incorrect reinstallation can disable the emergency release.
- 5Set the door card on a padded surfaceMove the door card to your prepared padded work surface, outer (visible) side up. Inspect all clips still attached to the panel; replace any that are broken or distorted.
- 6Remove the interior handle / release switch assemblyFrom the back side of the door card, remove the fasteners securing the interior release switch module to the panel. Release any retention tabs and lift the assembly out of the panel. Note the orientation of any guide pins or alignment ribs.Torque specHandle Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 7Compare and prep the new handle assemblyCompare the new interior release/handle assembly side-by-side with the removed unit: connector type and pinout, mounting boss locations, and any integrated trim. Confirm correct part for the specific door (front-left, front-right, rear-left Falcon, rear-right Falcon). Transfer any reusable trim or seals if the new part does not include them.ℹ️Front and rear (Falcon) interior release modules are NOT interchangeable. Verify before installation.
- 8Install the new handle assembly into the door cardSeat the new interior release/handle assembly into the door card, ensuring alignment pins are fully engaged and no wiring is pinched. Install the retaining screws and torque to specification.Torque specHandle Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect harness and reinstall the door cardReconnect all electrical connectors until each lock tab clicks. Re-hook the mechanical emergency release cable (if equipped) into its clip in the original orientation. Hang the door card on the upper belt hook first, then align lower clips to the door shell and press firmly at each clip location until each seats. Reinstall all fasteners removed in step 2. For any non-listed fasteners on the door card itself, torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.⚠Do not slam the door card into place — slap each clip individually to avoid breaking them.
- 10Reconnect 12V and exit service modeReconnect the 12V battery in the frunk (positive first, then negative). Close the frunk. If a Falcon door was placed in service mode, exit service mode via the touchscreen. Allow the vehicle to fully wake and the door modules to initialize before testing.
Reassembly
- Verify all door card clips are fully seated — run a finger around the perimeter feeling for any gaps between the panel and door shell.
- Confirm window switch, speaker, courtesy lighting, and ambient lighting all function before considering the job complete.
- Reinstall any trim caps over fasteners and confirm they sit flush.
- Wipe the panel with a microfiber towel to remove any handling marks.
Verification
- With the door open, press the interior electronic release — confirm an audible actuator/relay click and that the door latch releases.
- Close the door and, from inside the vehicle (window down, in case of fault), press the interior release — confirm the door opens normally.
- On Falcon Wing doors: cycle the door fully open and fully closed using both the interior switch and the touchscreen control. Verify obstacle detection still functions (gently obstruct travel) — this is the most common failure point on Model X service.
- Check the touchscreen for any new alerts related to door, BCM, or switch faults. If a relearn/configuration alert appears, the vehicle must be taken to a Tesla-certified technician with Toolbox access.
- Operate the window from the new switch (if integrated) including auto-up/auto-down; if window auto-functions are lost, perform the window initialization per the owner's manual (hold full-up and full-down positions).
- Note: this is not a scheduled-interval service item. However, while the door is open, this is a good time to inspect the cabin air filter service date — Tesla recommends cabin filter replacement every 2 years (every 3 years for HEPA-equipped Model X with bioweapon defense).
