Replace the exterior side mirror assembly on a 2024 Model X. The mirror is power-folding, heated, auto-dimming, and contains the side repeater camera used by Autopilot, requiring careful handling and reconnection.

Warnings

⚠️Falcon Wing doors are NOT involved in this job, but the front door opens differently than a typical car. Ensure the front door is fully open and stable before working at the mirror; do not lean against the door.
The side mirror houses an Autopilot camera and harness. Pulling the mirror away from the door without disconnecting the connector first can damage the camera ribbon and trigger Autopilot/Side Repeater faults.
Aluminum body panels — do not pry against the door skin with metal tools and never strike with a hammer. Use only plastic trim tools.
ℹ️After replacement, the side repeater camera may require recalibration via Tesla service tooling. If Autopilot blind-spot/lane features behave abnormally, schedule a service center calibration.
Power-folding/heated mirror connector pins are fine-pitch. Do not force; release the lock tab fully before unplugging.

Tools required

Plastic trim removal tools (non-marring)Essential
Torx bit set (T20/T25/T27)Essential
1/4" drive torque wrench (2–20 Nm range)Essential
Microfiber cloth and painter's tape (to protect glass and paint)
Helper or padded support to hold mirror during removal

Parts

  • Side mirror assembly (Model X 2024, correct side, color-matched, with camera) × 1 — Manufacturer-specified mirror assembly — confirm side, paint code, and camera/heating options match VIN
  • Replacement clips/fasteners for interior trim (if damaged on removal) × 1 — OEM trim clip set

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery in the frunk (remove frunk liner/cover as needed, loosen the negative terminal first). See architecture notes for location.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Disable mirror auto-fold in the touchscreen prior to powering down so the mirror is in the unfolded service position.
  7. Open the front door fully and protect the door card and window glass with painter's tape and a microfiber cloth.
  8. Verify the replacement mirror matches: side (LH/RH), paint code, heating, power-fold, auto-dim, and camera options.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the inner mirror trim
From inside the vehicle with the front door open, locate the triangular sail panel/trim at the front-upper corner of the door where the mirror attaches. Using a non-marring plastic trim tool, gently release the inner mirror trim cover. Work from the rear edge forward to avoid stressing the front clip.
Trim clips are brittle on cold days. Warm the area to room temperature before prying to reduce breakage.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the mirror harness
With the trim removed, locate the mirror's electrical connector(s) on the door side. Press the lock tab fully and pull the connector straight out — do not pull on the wires. There may be a single multi-pin connector or separate connectors for the camera and the mirror motor/heater; release each carefully.
The Autopilot side repeater camera shares this harness path. Avoid bending the camera leads sharply.
  3. 3
    Support the mirror
Have a helper support the mirror from outside, or tape a padded shim between the mirror base and the door to prevent it from dropping once fasteners are released. The assembly is heavier than it looks due to the motor, heater, and camera module.
  4. 4
    Remove the mirror mounting fasteners
From inside the door (now exposed by the removed trim), remove the mirror's mounting fasteners (typically three Torx bolts arranged in a triangular pattern around the mirror base studs). Keep the fasteners organized — they will be reused unless damaged.
Do not let the mirror hang by its harness when the last bolt is removed.
  5. 5
    Remove the mirror assembly
From outside, lift the mirror straight off the door's mounting studs/locating pin. Carefully feed the harness through the door grommet. Inspect the foam/rubber gasket between the mirror base and the door — if torn, replace it with the new mirror's gasket or an OEM equivalent.
  6. 6
    Prepare the new mirror
Compare the new mirror to the old one for fitment, gasket, harness length, and connector keying. Confirm the side repeater camera lens is clean and undamaged. Transfer the gasket if the new unit did not include one.
  7. 7
    Install the new mirror
Feed the new harness through the door grommet first, then seat the mirror's locating pin into the door. Hand-start all mounting fasteners before torquing any of them. Torque the mirror mounting fasteners to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
ℹ️Do not invent a torque value here — the verified database does not list a specific torque for the Model X mirror mount. Refer to current Tesla Service Manual.
  8. 8
    Reconnect the harness
Plug the connector(s) in fully until the lock tab clicks. Route the harness so it does not get pinched between the mirror base and the door. Confirm the grommet is seated to maintain water sealing.
A pinched harness inside the door will cause intermittent camera/mirror faults that are difficult to diagnose later.
  9. 9
    Reinstall interior trim
Align the inner mirror trim to its clips and press evenly until each clip seats. Replace any clips that broke during removal. Verify the trim sits flush with the door card and A-pillar.
  10. 10
    Reconnect 12V battery
In the frunk, reconnect the 12V battery (positive first, then negative). Torque the battery terminal hardware.
Do not overtighten the 12V terminal bolts — the posts are easily damaged.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Confirm all interior trim is fully seated with no gaps.
  2. Reinstall the frunk 12V cover/liner that was removed for battery access.
  3. Close the front door and verify the mirror clears the A-pillar and window when folding.
  4. Re-enable mirror auto-fold in the touchscreen if it was disabled.

Verification

  • Power on the vehicle. Confirm no warning messages on the touchscreen related to cameras, Autopilot, or side repeaters.
  • From the touchscreen Controls > Mirrors, cycle power-fold open/close several times — both mirrors should move smoothly and stop in identical positions.
  • Test mirror tilt adjustment in all four directions using the steering wheel scroll wheel.
  • If equipped, activate rear defrost / mirror heat and confirm the new mirror glass warms within a few minutes.
  • Open the Autopilot camera view (Service menu or Sentry/Dashcam viewer) and verify a clear, correctly oriented image from the side repeater camera on the replaced side.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm Blind Spot Monitoring / Lane Departure indicators behave normally on the replaced side. If Autopilot reports a calibration request or the camera image is misaligned, schedule camera recalibration at a Tesla service center.
  • Inspect after the next car wash or rain event for water intrusion at the mirror base — a sign of an improperly seated gasket or grommet.
