Replacement of a rear tail light assembly on a 2024 Tesla Model X. Access is gained through the rear hatch/liftgate trim and (for outer lamps) requires opening the falcon door area is not involved — the outer tail lights are body-mounted and the inner lights are liftgate-mounted.

Warnings

⚠️Do NOT touch any orange cabling encountered in the rear of the vehicle. The HV pack runs under the floor — if exposed orange wiring is visible, STOP.
Falcon doors: keep the key fob well away from the vehicle and ensure the falcon doors are fully closed and powered down before working at the rear quarter — unexpected door movement can cause injury or damage.
Aluminum body panels — do NOT pry against painted surfaces with metal tools, and never strike trim with a hammer. Use plastic trim tools only.
ℹ️The Model X liftgate is power-operated. Disable power liftgate via the touchscreen (Controls → Service) or rely on the 12V disconnect to prevent unintended actuation.
Tail light gaskets are single-use friendly — inspect and replace if torn to prevent water intrusion into the trunk well.

Tools required

Plastic trim removal tool setEssential
Torque wrench (1–15 Nm range)Essential
Metric socket set (8mm, 10mm)Essential
Phillips/Torx driver setEssential
Insulated gloves for 12V disconnect
Painter's tape (to protect paint at lamp edge)

Parts

  • Tail Light Assembly (LH or RH, body-mounted or liftgate-mounted as applicable) × 1 — Tesla Model X (Refresh) tail light — match by side and body/hatch position
  • Plastic retainer clips (in case any break during trim removal) × 4 — Generic OEM-spec push clips

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Open the frunk and disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (negative terminal first). The 12V battery is located in the frunk on Model X.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Confirm which tail light is being replaced (outer body-mounted vs. inner liftgate-mounted) — access procedure differs slightly.
  7. Open the rear liftgate manually after the 12V is disconnected; prop it securely as the powered struts will not hold actively.
  8. Lay a soft blanket or fender cover along the rear bumper edge to protect paint while the lamp is removed.

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove rear interior trim for access
From inside the cargo area (or inside the liftgate for inner lamps), use a plastic trim tool to release the access cover or trunk side trim panel that conceals the rear of the tail light assembly. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips. Set the panel aside.
Some trim panels have hidden fasteners under plastic plugs — do not force panels.
  2. 2
Remove access cover screws (if equipped)
If the rear of the tail light is protected by a service cover secured with screws, remove them and retain. These will be reinstalled to the manufacturer-specified torque.

    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Disconnect tail light wiring harness
Locate the electrical connector at the rear of the tail light assembly. Depress the locking tab and pull the connector straight off — do not pull on the wires. Inspect the connector and pins for corrosion or moisture.
ℹ️If the connector is stuck, do not force it — verify the lock tab is fully released.
  4. 4
Remove the chassis/ground bolt (if equipped)
If the lamp assembly has a dedicated ground strap or grounding bolt to the body/liftgate, remove it. Note the routing for reinstallation.
A poor ground will cause intermittent lamp faults and CAN-bus warnings on the touchscreen — clean the ground point before reinstalling.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove tail light mounting fasteners
Remove the tail light mounting bolts/nuts securing the assembly to the body or liftgate. Support the assembly with one hand as the last fastener is removed so it does not fall and damage the paint.
    Torque spec
    Tail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Withdraw the tail light assembly
Pull the assembly straight rearward to release any locating pins or rubber grommets from the body. Do not twist or pry — Tesla tail lights use precision-fit alignment pegs that can shear if forced. If resistant, recheck for hidden fasteners.
Aluminum body — do not strike or pry against the painted fender/quarter.
  7. 7
    Inspect gasket and mounting points
Inspect the foam/rubber gasket on the new (and old) assembly. Confirm no tears, and that all alignment pegs are intact. Clean the body mating surface of any debris or old adhesive.
  8. 8
    Install new tail light assembly
Align the new assembly's locating pegs with the body/liftgate grommets and press firmly until seated flush. Verify even gap with surrounding panels before tightening any fasteners.
ℹ️Panel gap must be even with the bumper and quarter/liftgate. If gap is off, the lamp is not fully seated — do not force fasteners to pull it in.
  9. 9
    Torque tail light mounting fasteners
Install and torque the tail light mounting bolts in a cross pattern to ensure even seating.
    Torque spec
    Tail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reinstall ground bolt (if applicable)
Reattach the grounding strap/bolt to the cleaned ground point and torque to spec. This is a CRITICAL fastener — a loose ground will cause lamp faults.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect wiring harness
Plug in the electrical connector until the lock tab clicks. Tug gently to confirm it is fully latched.
  12. 12
Reinstall access cover and interior trim
Reinstall the service cover screws to spec, then reinstall the interior trim panel, ensuring all clips fully seat. Replace any clips that broke during disassembly.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Confirm all interior trim is fully seated with no rattles.
  2. Close the liftgate manually and confirm latch engagement before powering the vehicle back up.
  3. Reconnect the 12V battery (negative terminal last) and torque the terminal hardware to spec.
  4. Close the frunk.

Verification

  • Power the vehicle on with the key fob and check the touchscreen for any lighting or CAN-bus alerts (e.g., 'Tail light fault').
  • Test all tail light functions: running lights (parking lights on), brake lights (press the brake pedal with the vehicle in P), turn signals (left and right), reverse lights (shift to R), and rear fog if equipped.
  • Have a helper confirm the dynamic turn signal sweep (if equipped) animates correctly across all LED segments — a partial sweep indicates an internal LED module fault in the new assembly.
  • Power-cycle the liftgate (if disabled in Service Mode) and confirm normal open/close operation.
  • Inspect panel gaps in daylight — the new lamp should sit flush with the bumper and quarter/liftgate with even gaps.
  • After a rain or car wash, recheck the trunk well for water intrusion — a leak indicates a damaged gasket or unseated assembly.
  • Note: while the vehicle is in for service, verify the cabin air filter (2-year interval, 3 years if HEPA-equipped) and brake fluid (2-year interval) service status, as these are commonly overlooked Tesla maintenance items.
