Removal and reinstallation of a front door interior trim panel (door card) on a 2024 Model X Plaid. The Model X uses falcon rear doors with a different procedure, so this guide covers the front door panel; rear falcon door trim service requires additional precautions due to the integrated sensors and actuators.
Warnings
⚠️On Model X, NEVER work on a falcon door panel with the door in motion or in an unsupported partially-open position. Disable the door via the touchscreen (Controls > Service) and disconnect the 12V battery before pulling the rear door card.
⚠The door contains a side-impact airbag and a tweeter/midrange speaker harness. Do not yank the panel off — wiring connectors and the airbag-adjacent trim must be released by hand.
⚠Door panel push-pin clips are one-time-use friendly. Plan on replacing any that crack or stay seated in the door shell when the panel comes off.
ℹ️The Model X aluminum door shell scratches and dents easily. Tape the door edge and never pry against bare metal — only against the panel itself with a plastic tool.

Parts
- Replacement door panel retaining clips (push-pin style) × 6 — OEM-spec door card clips — replace any that broke on removal
- Door panel moisture/vapor barrier butyl sealant (if barrier is disturbed) × 1 — OEM butyl rope sealant
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake via the touchscreen.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob/phone key carried away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Open the frunk and disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery negative terminal (frunk-mounted, similar position to Model S). Wait an additional 2 minutes before touching any door electronics so the airbag capacitors fully discharge.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal. If you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- If working on a rear falcon door: before disconnecting 12V, place the door in Service Mode via the touchscreen so it does not attempt to auto-close. Confirm the door is fully open and supported before powering down.
- Lower the window approximately 2–3 inches to take tension off the inner belt seal during panel removal, then power down.
- Lay a padded blanket on a clean bench or the floor nearby to receive the removed panel face-down.
Procedure
- 1Diagnostic check before disassemblyIf you are removing the door panel because of a symptom (window not sealing, speaker rattle, interior light failure, door switch not responding, or on a falcon door, sensor faults or actuator noise), first confirm the failure mode. Cycle the window, test each switch on the master switch pack, and on falcon doors listen for the cinch latch motor and verify the capacitive sensor strip on the door edge responds. Knowing the exact failure narrows what to inspect once the panel is off and prevents a second teardown.
- 2Remove the interior door pull / grab handle bezelUsing a wide plastic trim tool, gently pry up the trim insert at the bottom of the interior pull cup (the recessed handle area). It is retained by clips only. Lift it out to expose the screw(s) underneath the pull cup.
- 3Remove the screws hidden under the pull cup trimRemove the T20 Torx screws located in the bottom of the pull cup recess. These are the primary fasteners holding the lower portion of the door panel to the door shell. Set them aside in a labeled tray; they are short and easy to lose.Torque specDoor Panel Screws2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 4Release the switch pack / master window switch panelFrom inside the door pull, push up on the switch carrier from below using a plastic trim tool. The switch pack lifts up and out of the armrest as a module. Once free, rotate it to access the connector(s) on the underside and disconnect them by pressing the lock tab — do not pull on the wires. Set the switch pack aside.⚠Pry only against the switch carrier itself, not against the soft armrest leather/vegan leather, which marks easily.
- 5Check for and remove any additional perimeter screwsInspect the lower edge and trailing edge of the door panel for any additional Torx screws hidden behind small plug covers. If present, pop the cover with a narrow trim tool and remove the screws. These secure the lower rear corner of the panel to the inner door shell.Torque specDoor Panel Screws2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 6Release the panel push-pin clips around the perimeterStarting at the lower front corner of the panel, insert a wide plastic trim tool between the panel and the door shell and pull straight outward (toward you) to pop each push-pin clip. Work systematically: bottom edge first, then up the front (hinge-side) edge, then the rear edge. Do NOT pull on the top of the panel yet — it hooks over the inner belt molding. Listen and feel for each clip releasing; there are typically 6–9 clips around the perimeter.⚠If a clip resists, stop and reposition your tool directly behind that clip. Prying off-axis is what snaps clips and cracks the panel substrate.Torque specTrim Panel Clips2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 7Lift the panel up and off the inner belt moldingOnce all perimeter clips are released, grasp the panel by its lower edge and lift it straight upward about 1–2 inches. The top lip of the door card hooks behind the inner belt weatherstrip and must be lifted clear before the panel will come away from the door. Tilt the top of the panel toward you only slightly to clear the belt molding.
- 8Disconnect interior door release cable and remaining harnessesWith the panel held a few inches off the door, reach behind it and locate: (a) the interior electronic door release wiring/microswitch connector, (b) the courtesy/puddle lamp harness, (c) the tweeter speaker connector at the upper front corner, and (d) any ambient lighting connector along the armrest. Press each connector's lock tab and pull straight off. If a mechanical emergency-release cable is present at the front edge, rotate the cable end 90° in its retainer and slide it out of the latch lever.⚠Do not let the panel hang by any wire. Support its full weight while disconnecting.
- 9Set the panel face-down on the padded surfaceCarry the freed panel to your padded blanket and lay it face-down. Inspect the back of the panel: count the clip towers and confirm each clip is still attached to the panel (not stuck in the door shell). Any clips left behind in the door shell must be pulled out with needle-nose pliers and replaced — do not reuse cracked clips.
- 10Service the underlying component (job-dependent)With the panel off, complete whatever the underlying service requires (window regulator, speaker, door latch, actuator, falcon door sensor harness, vapor barrier reseal, etc.). If you peeled back the foam/plastic vapor barrier, plan to reseal it with fresh butyl on reassembly — a poorly sealed barrier causes water in the footwell and rattles. Torque any internal door-shell brackets you removed to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual for values not listed in the verified torque list.ℹ️If you are servicing a falcon door sensor or actuator (the most common Model X service item), label every connector with tape before disconnecting — there are multiple similar plugs in the rear door cavity.Torque specBracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)Sensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Replace damaged clips before reinstallingPress new push-pin clips into any tower on the back of the panel where the original clip is cracked, missing, or has lost its spring. The clips snap into the panel substrate from the back. Confirm every clip is square and seated before lifting the panel back to the door.Torque specTrim Panel Clips2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reseal the vapor/moisture barrier with fresh butyl rope sealant if it was disturbed. Any gap will cause water intrusion into the cabin.
- Reconnect all harnesses removed in Step 8 (door release, courtesy lamp, tweeter, ambient light). Confirm each connector clicks and locks.
- If a mechanical emergency-release cable was disconnected, reattach it to the latch lever and rotate the cable end into its retainer until it seats.
- Hook the top lip of the door panel over the inner belt molding first, aligning it along the full length of the window opening.
- Align each push-pin clip with its hole in the door shell. Press firmly with the heel of your hand directly over each clip until you hear/feel it snap home. Do not strike the panel with a fist or hammer — work clip-by-clip.
- Reinstall the screws under the pull cup and any perimeter screws. Torque to the Door Panel Screws spec (2.0 Nm / 1.5 lb-ft). These threads are into plastic carriers — overtightening will strip them.
- Reconnect the master switch pack harness, then press the switch carrier down into the armrest until it clicks flush.
- Reinstall the pull cup trim insert by aligning its clips and pressing it into place.
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal in the frunk. Close the frunk.
- If you serviced a falcon door, exit Service Mode on the touchscreen and allow the door to perform its self-calibration cycle before normal use.
Verification
- Cycle the window fully up and down. Confirm it seals against the upper weatherstrip with no whistle and that auto-up/auto-down still work (one-touch operation may require recalibration: hold the switch in the up position for 3 seconds after the window reaches the top).
- Test every switch on the master switch pack: all four windows (where applicable), mirror adjust, mirror fold, child lock.
- Press the interior electronic door release and confirm the door unlatches normally. Test the manual emergency release as well.
- Tap along the armrest, door pull, and lower panel with your knuckles and listen for rattles or loose-clip buzzing. A properly seated panel should sound solid everywhere.
- On a rear falcon door: command the door open and closed from the touchscreen and from the exterior handle. Confirm no obstruction-detection faults, no abnormal motor noise, and that the cinch latch fully pulls the door shut.
- Drive at 40+ mph on a smooth road with the audio off and listen for new wind noise from the door — an indicator that the top lip did not seat behind the belt molding correctly.
- Check the front footwell carpet for dampness after the next rain or car wash; a leak indicates the vapor barrier was not resealed properly.
