Replacement of the front windshield wiper motor and linkage assembly on a 2024 Model X Plaid. The wiper motor is mounted under the cowl panel at the base of the windshield and is typically serviced as a complete motor + linkage module.

Warnings

⚠️Falcon Wing doors: keep the key fob well away from the vehicle and ensure doors are fully closed and powered down before working at the cowl. Unintended door articulation can strike a technician working at the windshield base.
Aluminum body panels — do not strike cowl, fenders, or A-pillar trim with a hammer. Pry only at designed clip locations.
The wiper motor 'park' position must be set before removing the wiper arms. Cycle the wipers to park, then power down before removal, or you will misalign the sweep on reinstall.
ℹ️Park-assist and rain sensor wiring runs near the cowl on the refresh Model X. Do not pull on harnesses while removing the cowl trim.

Parts

  • Front wiper motor and linkage assembly × 1 — Tesla Model X (2021+ refresh) front wiper motor/linkage — refer to VIN-specific parts catalog
  • Cowl panel clips (replacement, as needed) × 6 — OEM-spec push-pin retainers

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery, located in the frunk (similar position to Model S). Remove frunk liner/cover as required to access the 12V terminal.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Before disconnecting 12V: turn the wipers on briefly via the touchscreen 'Service Mode' wiper test (or stalk control) and allow them to return to the parked position. This makes reinstallation alignment far easier.
  7. Open the frunk fully and secure it. Confirm Falcon Wing doors are closed and that the vehicle is fully powered down (no HVAC, no display) before working at the windshield base.
  8. Place a soft fender/cowl protector or microfiber towel along the base of the windshield to prevent scratching the glass and paint.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Mark and remove wiper arms
Lift the wiper arm cap covers and use a paint pen or tape to mark the resting position of each wiper arm against the windshield. Loosen the wiper arm retaining nut (do not fully remove yet). Use a wiper arm puller to break the arm free from the splined shaft, then remove the nut and lift the arms off. Tesla refresh Model X uses a single-blade asymmetric wiper — note its orientation.
Do NOT pry wiper arms off with a screwdriver — this will chip paint and crack the cowl. Use a proper puller.
  2. 2
    Remove cowl panel and weatherstrip
Carefully peel back the hood-to-cowl rubber weatherstrip. Release the cowl panel push-pin clips using a trim tool, working from one end to the other. Disconnect any washer hose or sensor connectors routed under the cowl, then lift the cowl panel away. Inspect clips for damage and replace any that are broken or fatigued.
  3. 3
Inspect cabin filter access (service interval note)
With the cowl removed, you have improved access to the HVAC intake area. While not part of this job, note that Tesla recommends cabin air filter replacement every 2 years (every 3 years for HEPA/Bioweapon Defense-equipped Model X). Mention to the customer if filters appear due.
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
Locate the wiper motor electrical connector on the motor housing. Release the locking tab and unplug the connector. Move the harness aside and secure it so it does not fall into the cowl cavity.
  5. 5
Remove wiper motor / linkage assembly mounting bolts
The wiper motor and linkage are mounted as a single module to the cowl crossmember with three bolts (typical configuration). Support the assembly with one hand and remove the mounting bolts. Note bolt locations and any ground straps attached to a mounting point — these must go back exactly where they came from.
ℹ️If a ground strap is attached at a mounting bolt, note its orientation. It must be reinstalled with clean metal-to-metal contact.

  6. 6
    Extract assembly from cowl tray
Tilt and maneuver the wiper motor and linkage assembly out of the cowl tray. The linkage may need to be rotated to clear the bulkhead studs. Do not force it — if it binds, recheck for hidden fasteners or trapped wiring.
  7. 7
Transfer hardware to new assembly (if applicable)
If the replacement is a bare motor only (not a complete module), transfer the linkage to the new motor following the manufacturer-specified alignment. Most refresh Model X replacements are supplied as a complete motor + linkage module — verify before disassembly.
Do not energize the new motor off-vehicle to 'test' it — this can move it out of the factory park position and cause a misaligned sweep.
  8. 8
Install new wiper motor / linkage assembly
Position the new assembly into the cowl tray, aligning to the mounting studs/holes. Reinstall the mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification in a cross pattern. Reattach any ground strap to its original location with clean contact surfaces.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Plug the wiper motor electrical connector in until the locking tab clicks. Verify the harness is routed away from any pinch points and is secured to its original retainers.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the cowl panel: seat all push-pin clips fully, reconnect any washer hose or sensor connectors that were detached, and reseat the hood-to-cowl weatherstrip.
  2. Temporarily reconnect the 12V battery (torque battery terminal bolts to spec) and briefly power on the vehicle to cycle the wipers to the park position. Power down again before installing the wiper arms — this guarantees correct sweep geometry.
  3. Install the wiper arm(s) onto the splined shaft aligned to the marks made during removal. Hand-thread the retaining nut, then torque the wiper arm nut to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
  4. Snap the wiper arm cap covers closed.
  5. Reconfirm 12V battery terminal torque and reinstall any frunk liner/cover removed for access.

Verification

  • With the vehicle awake, perform a full wiper cycle on low, high, and intermittent. Confirm both park position and full sweep extents match the pre-removal marks on the windshield.
  • Test the washer fluid spray and confirm wipers cycle correctly with the wash function.
  • Test single-wipe and auto/rain-sensing modes (refresh Model X uses camera-based auto wipers — verify the wipers respond to a manual stalk press; auto behavior may take a drive cycle to recalibrate).
  • Check for any wiper service alerts on the touchscreen.
  • Inspect the cowl panel seam to ensure all clips are seated and the weatherstrip is fully engaged — a poorly seated cowl will whistle at highway speed.
  • Confirm no warning lights or 12V-related alerts after battery reconnection.
