Replacement of an outer (body-mounted) tail light assembly on a 2024 Model X Plaid. The Model X uses both an outer (quarter panel) and inner (liftgate) tail lamp; this procedure covers the outer body-side unit, which is the most common service item.
Warnings
⚠️Do NOT touch or pierce any orange high-voltage cabling. The HV pack is floor-mounted and cabling routes near the rear of the vehicle.
⚠The Model X has a Falcon Wing rear door system with sensors and pinch-detection hardware. Keep the falcon doors CLOSED and powered down (12V disconnected) before working at the rear quarter to prevent unexpected actuation.
⚠The Model X body is largely aluminum. Do not strike panels with a hammer or pry against painted surfaces — use plastic trim tools and protect edges with tape or a soft cloth.
ℹ️Tail light assemblies on the refresh Model X are LED and not user-serviceable internally — replace as a complete unit.
⚠Disconnect the 12V battery before unplugging the tail light harness to avoid shorting the LED driver circuit.
Tools required
Trim panel removal tool set (plastic pry tools)Essential
Metric socket set (8mm, 10mm)Essential
Torx bit set
Calibrated torque wrench (2–15 Nm range)Essential
Soft work blanket or fender cover (to protect aluminum body panels)Essential
Nitrile gloves
Parts
- Outer tail light assembly (Model X 2022+ refresh, LH or RH as needed) × 1 — OEM Tesla replacement assembly — confirm side and refresh-generation fitment
- Replacement plastic retainers/clips (as needed if damaged on removal) × 1 — Generic trim retainer kit matching OEM spec
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Open the frunk and disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (frunk-mounted, similar to Model S). Follow the manufacturer-specified disconnect order.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Confirm the falcon wing doors are fully closed BEFORE disconnecting 12V; once 12V is removed they cannot be powered.
- Open the rear liftgate and prop it (manually — power assist will be inactive) to access the inner trim near the tail light.
- Lay a fender cover or soft blanket over the rear quarter to protect the aluminum paint surface.
- Identify which side (LH/RH) is being replaced and verify the new assembly matches the side and generation of the vehicle.
Procedure
- 1Access rear cargo area trimOpen the liftgate. Remove the rear cargo side trim panel on the affected side using plastic pry tools. Release retainer clips carefully; do not yank, as broken clips may rattle after reassembly.⚠Pry only at clip locations. Prying against painted aluminum can dent the inner panel.
- 2Expose tail light fastenersWith the cargo trim displaced, locate the manufacturer-specified mounting fasteners securing the outer tail light assembly to the body. The Model X refresh tail light is retained by fasteners accessed from inside the cargo area plus integrated locating pins at the outboard edge.
- 3Disconnect tail light electrical connectorLocate the wiring harness connector for the tail light. Press the locking tab and disconnect. Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or melted pins — a common failure mode that may have caused the original lamp issue.ℹ️If pins show heat damage, the harness side may also need repair — do not simply install a new lamp over a damaged connector.
- 4Remove tail light mounting fastenersRemove the tail light retaining bolts/nuts. Support the assembly with one hand as the last fastener is loosened — the lens is heavier than it looks and can fall and crack against the bumper cover.Torque specTail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 5Withdraw the assembly from the bodyPull the tail light straight rearward to disengage the locating pins from their grommets. Do not twist or pry against the painted quarter panel. If resistant, verify all fasteners are removed before applying force.⚠Aluminum body — do not strike with hammer or pry against painted surfaces.
- 6Inspect mounting points and grommetsInspect the locating pin grommets in the body for tears or missing rubber. Inspect the body seal channel for debris or water intrusion staining. Clean the mating surface with a lint-free cloth.
- 7Transfer any reusable hardwareIf the new assembly does not include locating pins or gaskets, transfer them from the old unit. Verify all gaskets seat properly to maintain the IP-rated seal against water intrusion into the cargo area.
- 8Install new tail light assemblyAlign the new assembly's locating pins with the body grommets and press evenly until seated flush with the surrounding body lines. Verify panel gap is consistent top-to-bottom against the liftgate and quarter panel before tightening fasteners.
- 9Torque tail light fastenersInstall retaining bolts hand-tight first, confirm alignment is still correct, then torque to specification using a calibrated torque wrench. Do not overtighten — the housing is plastic and will crack or distort the lens seal.Torque specTail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical harnessPlug the wiring harness connector into the new assembly until the locking tab clicks. Ensure the harness is routed back into its original retainer to prevent rattles or chafing against sheet metal.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the rear cargo side trim panel, ensuring all clips fully seat (listen for each click).
- Verify any displaced cargo floor trim or scuff plate is reseated.
- Reconnect the 12V battery in the frunk in the manufacturer-specified order and close the frunk.
- Allow the vehicle to wake up (insert key fob / open driver door) and let the system reinitialize for ~30 seconds before testing.
Verification
- With ignition active, test all tail light functions: running lights, brake lights (have an assistant press the brake), turn signals, reverse light (if integrated on this side), and rear fog if equipped.
- Check the touchscreen for any 'Lighting System' or rear lamp warnings — the LED driver self-reports failures on the refresh Model X.
- Engage Autopilot/AutoSteer briefly on a safe road or in a parking lot; rear blind spot and lane camera systems remain functional, but confirm no new warnings appear.
- Spray water along the upper edge of the new tail light and check inside the cargo trim cavity for leaks — water intrusion is the #1 reason a 'good' replacement fails again.
- Visually confirm panel gap between the tail light, liftgate, and quarter panel is uniform.
- Note: while in the rear of the vehicle, this is also a convenient time to verify cabin air filter age (Tesla recommends every 2 years, or 3 years for HEPA/Bioweapon Defense-equipped Model X) and confirm tire rotation interval (~6,250 mi).
