Replace the driver or passenger side mirror assembly on a 2024 Model Y. The mirror is a powered, heated, auto-dimming, power-folding unit with integrated turn signal and (depending on trim) blind-spot camera, requiring careful trim removal and connector handling.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery before unplugging the mirror harness. The mirror circuit shares wiring with the door module; live disconnects can set DTCs or damage the body controller.
Model Y body panels are partially aluminum. Never pry against painted surfaces with metal tools and never strike trim with a hammer.
Mirror glass on this vehicle is heated and (on most trims) auto-dimming with a fluid-filled electrochromic layer — do not flex, drop, or pry directly on the glass.
ℹ️If the vehicle is equipped with the blind-spot/side repeater camera in the mirror, calibration prompts may appear in the touchscreen after replacement. Do not perform a manual camera calibration unless directed by Tesla service documentation.
ℹ️Mirrors are side-specific and trim-specific. Confirm the replacement matches the original (heated, power-fold, auto-dim, camera, color code) before starting.

Tools required

Plastic trim/panel removal toolsEssential
Torx bit set (T-handle preferred)Essential
Metric socket set with extensionEssential
Torque wrench (1/4" drive, low range)Essential
Microfiber towels and painter's tape (to protect paint/glass)
Helper or padded support to hold mirror during removal

Parts

  • Side mirror assembly (color-matched, side-specific, correct trim — Premium vs. with blind-spot camera) × 1 — Manufacturer-specified Model Y side mirror — verify left/right and camera/non-camera variant before ordering
  • Replacement trim clips (in case originals break on removal) × 1 — OEM-equivalent door trim retainer clips

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (located behind/under the rear seat area on Model Y). Torque battery terminal hardware to spec on reinstall.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Open the affected front door fully and support it. Lay a clean towel along the top of the door card and along the A-pillar to prevent scratches.
  7. Manually fold the mirror inward only if it moves freely; do not force a power-fold mirror with the 12V disconnected if it resists.
  8. Verify the replacement mirror matches the original variant (side, color, camera/no-camera, heated, auto-dim, power-fold).

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove the interior mirror trim cover (sail panel / tweeter trim)
From inside the vehicle, gently release the small interior trim cover at the front-upper corner of the door (the triangular panel where the mirror meets the door frame). Use a plastic trim tool and pull straight inward to release the clips. Set the cover aside on a soft surface.
Clips are brittle; pull evenly. Have replacement clips on hand.
  2. 2
    Access the mirror mounting fasteners
With the inner trim cover removed, locate the mirror mounting fasteners and the electrical connector for the mirror harness. On Model Y the mirror is retained by manufacturer-specified fasteners through the door's inner sheet metal into the mirror base.
  3. 3
    Disconnect the mirror electrical connector
Release the locking tab on the mirror harness connector and unplug it. Inspect the pins for corrosion or bent terminals. Feed any retaining clip out of its holder so the harness can pass through the door cleanly when the mirror is removed.
Do not pull on the wires — release the lock tab and pull on the connector body only.
  4. 4
    Support the mirror externally
From outside the vehicle, support the mirror assembly with one hand (or have a helper hold it). The mirror is heavier than it looks, especially camera-equipped variants, and will drop free once the last fastener is removed.
  5. 5
    Remove the mirror mounting fasteners
While supporting the mirror, remove the manufacturer-specified mirror mounting fasteners from inside the door opening. Carefully pull the mirror outward away from the door, guiding the harness and grommet through the door body.
Do not let the mirror swing on the harness — this can damage the connector and door grommet.
  6. 6
Inspect the mounting surface and grommet
With the mirror off, inspect the door's mirror mounting boss for cracks, distortion, or moisture intrusion. Inspect the rubber grommet/seal that the harness passes through and replace if torn — water entry here will corrode the door module.
  7. 7
    Transfer color-matched cap if required
If the replacement mirror was supplied without a painted cap, transfer the original cap per the manufacturer's procedure for that mirror style. Refer to the Tesla Service Manual for cap removal — clip locations vary by build date.
ℹ️Caps are clipped, not screwed. Forcing them can crack the painted shell.
  8. 8
Position the new mirror and route the harness
Feed the new mirror's harness through the door opening and seat the grommet fully into the door sheet metal. Hold the mirror flush against the mounting boss, ensuring the gasket seats evenly with no pinched wiring.
  9. 9
Install and torque mirror mounting fasteners
Install the mirror mounting fasteners hand-tight first to align the assembly, then torque to the OEM specification — refer to the Tesla Service Manual. Do not exceed factory torque; the mounting boss is part of a stamped door panel and will deform if overtightened.
Torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. Do not substitute a generic value.
  10. 10
    Reconnect the mirror harness
Plug the mirror connector in until the lock tab clicks fully home. Seat the harness back into any retaining clip on the door inner panel.
  11. 11
    Reinstall the interior trim cover
Align the triangular interior trim cover and press it firmly into place until all clips seat. Verify it sits flush with the door card and weatherstrip.

Reassembly

  1. Confirm the mirror harness connector is fully latched and the grommet is seated to keep water out of the door.
  2. Verify all interior trim clips are fully seated — no gaps along the A-pillar edge.
  3. Reconnect the 12V battery, torquing the battery terminal bolts to spec (do not overtighten).
  4. Close the door gently and confirm the weatherstrip is undisturbed.

Verification

  • Power on the vehicle and test mirror functions from the touchscreen / steering wheel scroll: tilt up/down/left/right on both axes.
  • Test power fold (if equipped) — mirror should fold and unfold smoothly without binding or grinding.
  • Test heated mirror function (briefly enable rear defrost in cold conditions, or check via service screen) — glass should warm.
  • Test auto-dim function in low light conditions if equipped.
  • If equipped with a blind-spot/side camera, verify the camera feed appears correctly on the touchscreen during turn signal activation and lane changes. Image should be clear, level, and not mirrored or rotated.
  • Drive at low speed and confirm no wind whistle from the mirror base — indicates the gasket is seated properly.
  • Check for any new alerts on the touchscreen; clear codes only with manufacturer-approved diagnostic tools if persistent.
