Replace the windshield washer fluid pump on a 2024 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD. The pump is mounted to the side of the washer fluid reservoir, accessible from the front wheel well after removing the fender liner.
Warnings
⚠The washer reservoir on Model Y is large (~3.5 qt). If the reservoir is full, fluid will spill out of the pump port when the pump is removed. Drain to below the pump level or have a pan ready.
⚠Aluminum body panels and plastic fender liner clips are fragile. Do not pry hard against painted surfaces; use plastic trim tools only.
ℹ️Even though this is a low-voltage job, Model Y has HV components in the front compartment area. Do not route tools or fingers near any orange cabling.
⚠Disconnecting the 12V battery will reset window calibration, clock-related state, and may trigger a brief reboot. Re-calibrate windows after reconnection.

Parts
- Windshield washer fluid pump (Model 3/Y shared) × 1 — Manufacturer-specified washer pump for 2024 Model Y — single-outlet pump
- Washer pump grommet/seal × 1 — OEM rubber grommet — inspect and replace if torn
Fluids
- Windshield Washer Fluid (top off after job) — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place vehicle in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob carried away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. On 2024 Model Y, the 12V (Li-ion) battery is accessed under the front trunk floor area — refer to the Tesla Service Manual for exact location on your build.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Turn the steering wheel fully to the right (the washer reservoir and pump are on the front-left/driver side of US-spec Model Y — confirm side on your vehicle before proceeding) to gain wheel-well access.
- Place a drain pan under the front fender liner area to catch washer fluid spillage.
- Have replacement pump and grommet on hand before starting.
Procedure
- 1Lift and support the front of the vehicleUsing the manufacturer-specified jack pad locations, raise the front of the vehicle and place jack stands at the OEM lift points. Do not lift on battery pack edges or non-reinforced pinch welds.⚠Use only Tesla-specified jack pad pucks at the designated lift points to avoid pack/floor damage.
- 2Remove the front wheel (washer reservoir side)Remove the lug nuts and pull the front wheel on the side where the washer reservoir is located. This exposes the fender liner for removal.
- 3Remove the front fender linerUsing a plastic trim tool and the appropriate Torx driver, remove the push-pin retainers and screws securing the front fender liner. Carefully fold or fully remove the liner to expose the washer fluid reservoir and pump on the inboard side of the wheel well.ℹ️Plastic clips are commonly broken on removal — have a few spare push-pin retainers available.
- 4Locate and identify the washer pumpIdentify the washer pump installed in the lower side of the washer reservoir. It will have a single electrical connector and a fluid hose leading to the cowl/windshield jets. Confirm pump location and orientation before disconnecting anything.
- 5Disconnect the electrical connectorDepress the locking tab on the pump's electrical connector and gently pull it free. Do not yank on the wiring. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion before installing the new pump.
- 6Disconnect the washer hoseSqueeze the quick-connect tabs (or pull the friction-fit hose, depending on configuration) and detach the washer hose from the pump outlet. Be prepared for residual fluid in the line.
- 7Remove the pump from the reservoirPosition the drain pan directly below the pump. Grasp the pump body and pull straight outward with a slight twist to free it from the rubber grommet seal in the reservoir wall. Washer fluid will drain from the pump opening — allow it to flow into the pan until it stops.⚠Do not pry against the reservoir wall — the plastic can crack, requiring a much more involved reservoir replacement.
- 8Inspect and replace the grommetInspect the rubber grommet in the reservoir port. If it is torn, hardened, or distorted, replace it with a new OEM grommet. A bad grommet will cause slow leaks that mimic a failed pump.
- 9Install the new washer pumpLubricate the new grommet lightly with washer fluid (do not use petroleum-based grease — it will degrade rubber). Press the new pump straight into the grommet until it is fully seated. Ensure orientation matches the original (electrical connector and hose port positioned for original routing).
- 10Reconnect hose and electrical connectorReconnect the washer hose to the pump outlet and verify the quick-connect (if equipped) clicks home. Reconnect the electrical connector until the locking tab engages.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the front fender liner, replacing any broken push-pin clips. Reinstall all Torx fasteners — torque to OEM specification; refer to Tesla Service Manual.
- Reinstall the front wheel. Torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer-specified value (Model Y lug torque — refer to Tesla Service Manual; do not guess).
- Lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Top off the washer fluid reservoir with windshield washer fluid (capacity approximately 3.5 qt total — add only what was lost).
- Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. Torque the battery terminal bolts as listed.
- Close the front trunk and re-calibrate the windows by fully lowering and raising each one if any auto-up/auto-down behavior is lost after the battery reconnect.
Verification
- With the vehicle powered on, activate the washers from the stalk control. Confirm fluid sprays from both windshield jets within 1-2 seconds and at full pressure.
- Inspect under the fender liner area and around the pump grommet for any leaks after running the washers 3-4 times.
- Check the touchscreen for any 'low washer fluid' or related alerts and clear/verify they are gone.
- If equipped and used, verify rear washer (Model Y rear hatch) is also operating — note that the rear washer is fed by the same reservoir on Model Y.
- Note: Washer pump replacement is a wear-item repair, not a scheduled-maintenance item. While the front is open, this is a good opportunity to also check the cabin air filter (Tesla-recommended every 2 years) and brake fluid age (Tesla-recommended every 2 years), as those services are unrelated but commonly overdue.
