This procedure replaces the AC compressor clutch coil on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry with a 2.5L I4 engine without discharging the AC system.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. AC compressor and surrounding components may be extremely hot.
ℹ️This procedure does NOT require discharging the AC system. The refrigerant lines remain connected.
⚠Do not rotate the AC compressor pulley excessively with the clutch disconnected, as this may damage internal components.

Parts
- AC compressor clutch coil × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Snap ring (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely for at least 1 hour
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes
- Remove engine splash shield/undercover if equipped (multiple 10mm bolts)
- Raise and support vehicle on jack stands if additional clearance is needed
Procedure
- 1Remove serpentine beltLocate the serpentine belt tensioner on the right side of the engine. Using a 14mm socket on the tensioner bolt, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to release tension. Slide the belt off the AC compressor pulley first, then release tensioner and remove belt completely. Inspect belt for wear and replace if necessary.
- 2Disconnect clutch coil electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the AC compressor clutch coil. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the coil. If connector is difficult to access, use needle-nose pliers to carefully release the tab. Note the routing of the wire harness for reassembly.
- 3Remove clutch coil retaining snap ringUsing snap ring pliers, carefully expand and remove the snap ring that secures the clutch coil to the compressor housing. The snap ring is located in a groove on the compressor nose. Work carefully to avoid launching the snap ring. Inspect snap ring for damage or deformation and replace if necessary.
- 4Remove shim(s) behind clutch coilBehind the clutch coil, there are one or more thin metal shims that set the air gap for the clutch. Carefully remove these shims using a small flathead screwdriver or needle-nose pliers. Keep these shims in order and note their quantity and thickness, as they must be reinstalled in the same configuration unless you are adjusting clutch gap.
- 5Extract clutch coil from compressorGrasp the clutch coil firmly and pull it straight off the compressor nose. It may be tight due to the friction fit. If stuck, gently wiggle while pulling. Do not pry against the compressor housing. Once removed, inspect the mounting surface on the compressor for dirt, corrosion, or damage.
- 6Clean mounting surfacesUsing a wire brush or clean rag, thoroughly clean the compressor nose where the clutch coil mounts. Remove any dirt, oil residue, or corrosion. Ensure the snap ring groove is clean and free of debris. Clean the back of the pulley bearing area if accessible.
- 7Install new clutch coilPosition the new clutch coil over the compressor nose, ensuring the electrical connector port is oriented correctly for wire harness routing. Push the coil firmly onto the compressor until it seats completely against the mounting surface. The coil should slide on smoothly without binding.
- 8Reinstall shims in original configurationInstall the shims in the same order and quantity as removed. These shims are critical for proper clutch air gap. Push shims fully into position against the back of the clutch coil. Verify shims are seated flat and not cocked or bent.
- 9Install snap ringUsing snap ring pliers, compress the new or original snap ring and carefully install it into the groove on the compressor nose. Ensure the snap ring is fully seated in the groove all the way around its circumference. Tug gently on the clutch coil to verify it is secured by the snap ring.
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the clutch coil terminal until it clicks into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged. Route the wire harness as originally positioned, ensuring it will not contact the serpentine belt or moving pulley.
- 11Reinstall serpentine beltRoute the serpentine belt around all pulleys according to the belt routing diagram (typically on radiator support or underside of hood). Using a 14mm socket, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and slip the belt onto the final pulley. Release tensioner slowly to apply tension. Verify belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.
- 12Test clutch operationReconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and turn the AC system on to maximum cooling. The clutch should engage with an audible click and the center hub should begin rotating with the pulley. Turn AC off and verify the clutch disengages (center hub stops while pulley continues spinning).
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine splash shield/undercover if removed
- Lower vehicle from jack stands if raised
- Double-check all electrical connections are secure
- Verify serpentine belt is properly routed and tensioned
Verification
- Start engine and visually confirm serpentine belt is tracking properly on all pulleys
- Turn AC on and verify clutch engages immediately with audible click
- Listen for abnormal noises from compressor area during operation
- Verify AC system produces cold air after clutch engages
- Turn AC off and confirm clutch disengages (pulley spins but center hub stops)
- Check for proper air gap between clutch plate and pulley (should be 0.014-0.026 inches if measuring with feeler gauge)
- Cycle AC on and off several times to confirm reliable engagement and disengagement
