Preparation

  1. Verify vehicle is actually AWD-equipped (rare configuration) as standard Camry is FWD and has no rear axle seals
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Loosen rear wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
  4. Raise rear of vehicle and support securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight

    Expect 1-2 quarts of ATF to drain when axle is removed. Do not allow fluid to spill on brake components.

    Using seal puller or pick tool, carefully extract the old axle seal from the differential housing. Work around the perimeter of the seal to avoid damaging the housing bore. Note the installed depth and orientation of the old seal before removal.

    Lightly coat the outer diameter of the new seal with ATF. Position seal squarely in the bore with the seal lip facing inward toward the differential. Using seal driver or appropriately sized socket that contacts only the outer edge of the seal, drive seal into bore until it seats flush with the housing face. Tap evenly around perimeter to ensure square installation.
    Do not strike the seal face directly - only contact the outer metal ring to avoid damaging the sealing lip.

    Reinstall CV axle assembly
    Lightly coat the axle splines and seal contact surface with fresh ATF. Insert outer CV joint into rear hub assembly first, ensuring splines engage properly. Then align inner CV joint with differential flange. Install CV bolts finger-tight initially.

    Torque the six CV bolts to specification in a star pattern to ensure even clamping force on the joint. This prevents distortion and ensures proper sealing of the inner CV boot.

    Install and torque axle nut

    Never reuse old axle nut. Always use new cotter pin or re-stake the nut to prevent loosening.
