Parts
- Backup camera assembly × 1 — Toyota 86790-06010 or equivalent
- Camera mounting grommet/seal × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Wiring harness (if not pre-wired) × 1 — Toyota backup camera harness kit
- Trim clips (if damaged) × 4 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 90 seconds
- Open trunk and remove trunk liner panels to access reverse light wiring
- Verify display head unit is compatible with backup camera input (2015+ models typically have factory camera prep)
- Locate camera mounting location on trunk lid or rear bumper
Procedure
- 1Remove trunk trim panelsUsing trim removal tools, carefully pry out the rear trunk trim panel clips to access the trunk lid wiring area. Remove the upper trunk trim piece near the license plate area from inside the trunk. Set aside trim pieces and any clips for reinstallation.
- 2Drill camera mounting hole (if not pre-drilled)If vehicle was not factory-equipped, locate the camera mounting position centered above the license plate. Measure carefully and mark the center point. Drill a pilot hole, then enlarge to the diameter specified by camera manufacturer (typically 20-25mm). Deburr edges and apply rust preventative to bare metal.⚠Measure twice before drilling. Verify no wiring or components are behind drilling location from inside trunk.
- 3Install camera grommet and mount cameraInsert the rubber grommet into the drilled hole from the outside. Feed the camera wiring through the grommet from outside to inside the trunk. Secure the camera housing into the grommet, ensuring weatherseal is properly seated. If using mounting bolts, hand-tighten first to verify alignment.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 4Route camera wiring through trunkRoute the camera wiring harness along the driver side trunk channel, following existing wiring paths. Use zip ties to secure wiring to prevent rattling. Feed wiring through the trunk floor grommet into the passenger compartment, or follow the existing harness path toward the cabin.
- 5Connect to reverse light trigger wireLocate the reverse light wiring at the tail light assembly (white wire with red stripe for reverse positive). Tap into this wire to provide the trigger signal for the camera system. Solder or use a quality crimp connector, then seal with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape. Verify connection polarity with a multimeter if equipped.⚠Incorrect polarity or poor connections can cause camera malfunction or electrical shorts.
- 6Route video cable to head unitRun the video signal cable from the trunk area through the passenger side interior. Remove lower door sill trim and B-pillar trim as needed. Route cable beneath carpet along the rocker panel toward the dashboard. Keep video cable separated from power wires to minimize interference.
- 7Connect to display head unitRemove the center dashboard trim panel and radio/display unit mounting bolts to access rear connections. Locate the backup camera video input connector (typically yellow RCA or dedicated Toyota connector). Connect the camera video cable to the head unit. If installing aftermarket display, connect power, ground, and reverse trigger wires according to display manufacturer instructions.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Secure all ground connectionsEnsure camera ground wire is connected to a clean, bare metal ground point in the trunk area. Remove paint or rust from ground contact surface. Secure ground wire with appropriate bolt, ensuring tight metal-to-metal contact.ℹ️Poor ground connections are the most common cause of camera image quality issues or intermittent operation.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 9Reinstall display unit and dashboard trimSecure the head unit back into the dashboard using the original mounting bolts. Torque to specification. Reinstall center dashboard trim panels, ensuring all clips are properly seated and aligned.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the battery negative terminal. Start the vehicle and allow the head unit to initialize. Shift into reverse and verify camera image appears on display. Check for proper image orientation and clarity.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reinstall all trunk trim panels and verify clips are fully seated
- Replace any broken trim clips with new ones
- Ensure all wiring is secured and not pinched by trim panels
- Test trunk opening and closing to verify no interference with camera or wiring
Verification
- Start vehicle and shift into reverse - camera image should appear immediately on display
- Verify image is right-side-up and not mirrored incorrectly
- Check that guideline overlays appear if equipped with dynamic guidelines
- Verify camera switches off when shifting out of reverse
- Inspect exterior camera mounting for proper seal and alignment
- Test camera operation in various lighting conditions if possible
- Check for water intrusion into trunk area after car wash or rain
