This procedure covers removal and replacement of the combination switch (turn signal/wiper/cruise control stalk assembly) on the steering column of a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry with 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 90 seconds before beginning work to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge. Failure to do so may result in airbag deployment and serious injury.
Do not turn the ignition key or allow the steering wheel to rotate with the combination switch removed, as this may damage the airbag spiral cable.
Handle the combination switch carefully to avoid damaging the airbag spiral cable assembly on the steering column.
ℹ️Radio and clock settings will be lost when battery is disconnected. Have radio security code ready if applicable.

Parts

  • Combination switch assembly × 1 — 84310-06180 or equivalent OEM

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position and remove ignition key
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds for airbag system to discharge
  4. Adjust steering column to lowest tilt position for easier access
  5. Label or photograph all electrical connectors before disconnection

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal. Wait a minimum of 90 seconds before proceeding to allow the airbag system capacitors to fully discharge.

  2. 2
    Remove lower steering column covers
Locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the Phillips screws securing the lower cover (typically 2-3 screws). Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column and set aside. The upper cover may be removed at this stage or after the lower cover depending on screw accessibility.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove upper steering column covers
Remove the Phillips screws securing the upper steering column cover. Carefully separate the upper cover from the lower portion, being mindful of any clips or tabs. Once screws are removed, lift the upper cover up and away from the steering column. Set cover aside in a clean area.

    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Locate combination switch connectors
With the steering column covers removed, identify the electrical connectors for the combination switch on the left side of the steering column. There are typically two connectors: one larger connector for the main switch functions and one smaller connector. Note their positions and routing before disconnection.
ℹ️Taking a photo of connector positions and wire routing will aid in reassembly.
  5. 5
    Disconnect combination switch electrical connectors
Press the locking tab on each electrical connector and carefully pull the connectors straight away from the combination switch body. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If connectors are tight, use a small flat-head screwdriver to gently release the locking tab while pulling the connector housing.
Do not force connectors or pull on wires, as this may damage connector pins or wire terminals.
  6. 6
    Remove combination switch mounting screws
Locate the two Phillips screws securing the combination switch assembly to the steering column bracket (one upper, one lower). Remove both screws completely and retain them for reinstallation. The combination switch should now be free to remove from the column.
ℹ️Screws may be different lengths; note which position each came from.
  7. 7
Remove combination switch from steering column
Carefully slide the combination switch assembly away from the steering column, guiding the electrical connectors through any wire routing clips. Be extremely careful not to disturb or rotate the airbag spiral cable behind the steering wheel. Remove the switch completely and set aside.
Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate during this step, as it may damage the airbag spiral cable.
  8. 8
    Install new combination switch
Position the new combination switch onto the steering column mounting bracket, ensuring the switch body aligns properly with the mounting holes. Guide the electrical connectors through the appropriate routing clips. Install the two mounting screws finger-tight, then tighten evenly to ensure proper alignment before final torquing.
ℹ️Ensure the switch slides onto the column shaft smoothly without binding.
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect both electrical connectors to the combination switch, pressing firmly until you hear and feel each connector lock into place. Verify each connector is fully seated by gently pulling on the connector housing (not the wires). Route wiring through any clips to match original configuration.
ℹ️Ensure connector locking tabs engage completely to prevent intermittent electrical issues.
  10. 10
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover onto the column, aligning all mounting points and ensuring no wires are pinched. Install and torque the cover screws. Position the lower cover, again checking that no wires are trapped, and install the cover screws to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery negative terminal
Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery negative post. Torque the battery terminal bolt to specification. Ensure the connection is clean and tight.
Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts as this may damage the battery post or terminal.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify no wires are pinched between steering column covers
  3. Confirm steering wheel remains in straight-ahead position
  4. Reset radio presets and clock after battery reconnection

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify instrument cluster warning lights illuminate normally
  • Test turn signal operation in both left and right positions, verify indicator lights and external flashers work
  • Test high beam and low beam headlight switching with combination switch
  • Test windshield wiper all speeds (intermittent, low, high) and washer function
  • Test cruise control functions (set, resume, cancel) if equipped
  • Verify no airbag warning light remains illuminated after starting engine
  • Confirm all switch positions return to center/off properly without binding
  • Test that hazard lights function independently of turn signals
