This procedure covers cleaning fuel injectors on the 2012-2017 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine by removing the fuel rail and using a fuel injector cleaning kit.
Warnings
⚠️Fuel system is under pressure. Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines to prevent fuel spray and fire hazard.
⚠️Work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, flames, and heat sources. Fuel vapors are extremely flammable.
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting work. Hot engine components can cause burns.
⚠Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when working with fuel system components.
ℹ️This procedure cleans injectors in place. Severely clogged injectors may require professional ultrasonic cleaning or replacement.

Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on all four corners to release grommets
- Place shop towels around fuel line connections to catch residual fuel
- Relieve fuel system pressure by removing fuel pump relay (EFI MAIN relay in engine bay fuse box) and attempting to start engine until it fails to start
Procedure
- 1Disconnect fuel supply lineLocate the fuel supply line connection at the fuel rail on the driver's side of the engine. Use the appropriate fuel line disconnect tool to depress the locking tabs while pulling the fuel line straight off. Have shop towels ready to absorb residual fuel. Inspect the connection for damage.⚠Even after relieving pressure, some fuel will drain from the line. Keep towels ready.
- 2Disconnect injector electrical connectorsPress down on the locking tab of each of the four fuel injector connectors and pull straight up to disconnect. Move the wiring harness aside. Note the routing of the harness for reinstallation.
- 3Remove vacuum hoses and connectionsDisconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Disconnect the PCV hose from the valve cover if it interferes with fuel rail removal. Label connections if necessary for reinstallation.
- 4Remove fuel rail mounting boltsLocate the two fuel rail mounting bolts (one on each end of the fuel rail). Use a 12mm socket to remove both bolts completely. Keep bolts in a safe location for reinstallation.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 5Extract fuel rail with injectorsCarefully pull the fuel rail upward with a firm, even motion to remove it from the engine with all four injectors attached. The injectors will pull out of their ports in the intake manifold. Rock gently side-to-side if resistance is felt, but avoid using excessive force. Place the fuel rail assembly on a clean work surface.⚠Injector O-rings may stick in the manifold ports. Pull straight up to avoid tearing O-rings.
- 6Inspect injector O-rings and portsExamine the O-rings on each injector for cracks, hardening, or damage. Check the manifold injector ports for debris or carbon buildup. Clean ports with a non-metallic brush if necessary. Remove and discard old O-rings from injectors.
- 7Connect fuel injector cleaning kitFollow the fuel injector cleaning kit manufacturer's instructions to connect the cleaning system to the fuel rail. Typically, this involves attaching the kit's hose to the fuel rail inlet using the appropriate adapter and securing it. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks.ℹ️Do not reconnect the vehicle's fuel supply line during cleaning process.
- 8Run cleaning cyclePressurize the cleaning kit per manufacturer's instructions (typically 40-60 PSI). Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Reconnect the four injector electrical connectors. Start the engine and allow it to run on the cleaning solution until the canister is empty or the engine stalls (typically 15-20 minutes). The engine may run rough initially as carbon deposits break loose. Allow engine to cool after cleaning cycle completes.⚠Engine may idle rough or produce smoke during cleaning process. This is normal as deposits are removed.
- 9Disconnect cleaning kit and inspect injectorsDisconnect the negative battery terminal again. Remove the fuel injector cleaning kit from the fuel rail. Inspect each injector tip for cleanliness. Wipe down the fuel rail and injector bodies with a clean shop towel.
- 10Install new O-rings on injectorsLubricate new O-rings lightly with clean engine oil or gasoline. Install new upper and lower O-rings on each of the four fuel injectors, ensuring they are properly seated in their grooves. Do not reuse old O-rings.ℹ️Using new O-rings is critical to prevent fuel leaks and maintain proper injector sealing.
- 11Reinstall fuel rail assemblyAlign all four injectors with their respective ports in the intake manifold. Press down firmly and evenly on the fuel rail until all injectors are fully seated in the manifold. The rail should sit flush against its mounting surfaces. Install both fuel rail mounting bolts and torque to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect fuel line and electrical connectionsPush the fuel supply line onto the fuel rail connection until it clicks and locks into place. Tug gently to verify it is secure. Reconnect all four fuel injector electrical connectors until they click. Reconnect any vacuum hoses removed earlier.
- 13Check for fuel leaksReconnect the negative battery terminal. Reinstall the fuel pump relay (EFI MAIN). Turn the ignition key to ON position (without starting) for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat this 3-4 times to prime the fuel system. Inspect all fuel connections for leaks. If no leaks are observed, start the engine and recheck all connections while engine is running.⚠️Inspect carefully for fuel leaks before and during engine operation. Any fuel leak must be corrected immediately.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning grommets with studs and pressing down firmly at all four corners until seated
- Verify all tools and shop towels have been removed from engine bay
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify smooth idle
Verification
- Start engine and verify it idles smoothly without misfires or rough running
- Check for fuel odor or visible leaks around fuel rail and injector connections
- Verify no check engine light or fuel system codes are present
- Test drive vehicle to confirm improved throttle response and smooth acceleration
- Recheck fuel connections after test drive for any seepage
