This procedure covers the replacement of the fuel pressure regulator on the 2012-2017 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine, which controls fuel system pressure for proper engine operation.
Warnings
⚠️Gasoline is extremely flammable. Work in a well-ventilated area with no open flames, sparks, or heat sources. Have a fire extinguisher nearby.
⚠️Fuel system operates at high pressure (40-70 psi). Failure to properly relieve pressure can result in fuel spray causing injury or fire.
⚠Engine must be cold before beginning this procedure to prevent burns from hot components.
⚠Fuel vapor is toxic. Avoid prolonged inhalation and ensure adequate ventilation.

Parts
- Fuel pressure regulator × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Fuel pressure regulator O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Fuel line gaskets × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Ensure engine is completely cold (at least 2 hours after last operation)
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds for airbag system discharge
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on the four retention clips
- Place drain pan and shop towels under fuel rail area to catch residual fuel
Procedure
- 1Relieve fuel system pressureLocate the fuel pump relay in the engine compartment relay box (typically labeled EFI or FUEL PUMP). Remove the relay, then attempt to start the engine. The engine will start briefly then stall as pressure is relieved. Crank the engine for 3-5 additional seconds to ensure complete pressure relief. Turn ignition off and reinstall relay.⚠️Do not skip this step. Residual pressure in the fuel system can cause dangerous fuel spray.
- 2Verify zero fuel pressureAttach fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail test port (Schrader valve located on the fuel rail). Confirm pressure reads 0 psi. If pressure remains, repeat Step 1. Once confirmed, remove gauge and cap the test port.⚠Small amount of fuel will be released when connecting/disconnecting pressure gauge. Have shop towels ready.
- 3Disconnect fuel supply lineLocate the fuel supply line connection at the fuel rail. Use the appropriate size fuel line disconnect tool to depress the internal retaining tabs while pulling the line straight away from the rail. Inspect the connection for the O-ring seal and retain for comparison with replacement parts. Plug the open fuel line with a clean shop towel to prevent contamination.ℹ️Residual fuel will drain from the line. Ensure drain pan is positioned correctly.
- 4Remove fuel rail mounting boltsRemove the two 12mm fuel rail mounting bolts. Do not force the fuel rail off yet. The injectors create a tight seal in the intake manifold and require careful removal to prevent damage.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 5Remove fuel rail assemblyGently rock the fuel rail side-to-side while pulling upward evenly to break the injector seals from the intake manifold. Once free, lift the fuel rail with injectors still attached and position it to the side where you can access the fuel pressure regulator. Support the assembly to prevent strain on electrical connectors.⚠Do not pull on individual injectors or electrical connectors. Lift only by the fuel rail body.
- 6Disconnect regulator vacuum lineLocate the vacuum line connected to the top of the fuel pressure regulator. Pinch the clamp and slide it back along the hose, then pull the vacuum line straight off the regulator nipple. Inspect the line for cracks or deterioration.
- 7Remove fuel pressure regulatorRemove the two mounting screws securing the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel rail. Carefully pull the regulator straight out of the fuel rail. Note the orientation and position of the O-ring seal for proper installation of the replacement unit.ℹ️Residual fuel will be present in the regulator. Have shop towels ready.Torque specRegulator Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 8Prepare fuel rail for new regulatorClean the regulator mounting bore in the fuel rail with a clean, lint-free shop towel. Inspect for any debris, corrosion, or damage. Ensure the bore is completely dry before installing the new regulator.
- 9Install new fuel pressure regulatorLubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil or gasoline. Install the O-ring onto the new regulator ensuring it seats properly in the groove. Insert the regulator straight into the fuel rail bore, aligning the mounting screw holes. Install the two mounting screws and tighten to specification in a cross-pattern.⚠Do not over-tighten mounting screws as this can crack the regulator housing or strip the threads.Torque specRegulator Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect vacuum linePress the vacuum line firmly onto the regulator nipple until it seats completely. Slide the clamp into position approximately 5-10mm from the end of the nipple to secure the connection.
- 11Reinstall fuel rail assemblyInspect all four injector O-rings for damage and replace if necessary. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the injector O-rings. Align all four injectors with their respective ports in the intake manifold. Press down firmly and evenly on the fuel rail until all injectors are fully seated. Install the two fuel rail mounting bolts and tighten to specification.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect fuel supply lineRemove the shop towel from the fuel supply line. Install a new gasket on the fuel line fitting if equipped. Push the fuel line straight onto the fuel rail connection until you hear and feel a distinct click, indicating the internal tabs have engaged. Gently pull on the line to verify it is locked in place.ℹ️Connection must click audibly and be physically secure. A loose connection will cause fuel leaks and fire hazard.Torque specFuel Line25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 13Reconnect battery and prime fuel systemReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine) for 2 seconds, then OFF for 2 seconds. Repeat this cycle 4-5 times to allow the fuel pump to prime the system and build pressure. Inspect all connections for fuel leaks.⚠️Immediately wipe up any fuel leaks and do not start engine until leak source is identified and corrected.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by pressing down firmly on all four mounting points until clips engage
- Wipe up any spilled fuel and dispose of contaminated shop towels in an approved metal container
- Clear any diagnostic trouble codes from the ECU if check engine light is illuminated
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2-3 minutes while monitoring for fuel leaks at all connections
- Rev engine to 3000 RPM briefly and verify smooth operation with no hesitation or rough running
- Visually inspect all fuel connections, the regulator mounting area, and fuel rail for any signs of fuel seepage
- Connect fuel pressure gauge and verify system pressure is within specification (40-55 psi at idle for this engine)
- Test drive vehicle and verify normal acceleration and no fuel odor in cabin
- Re-inspect all connections after test drive for any delayed leaks
