Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold before beginning work

    Locate the two heater hoses on the passenger side firewall. These hoses run from the engine to the heater core pipes protruding through the firewall. Note their routing and orientation for reinstallation. Take a photo if necessary.

    Using hose clamp pliers or flathead screwdriver, loosen the hose clamp at the engine-side connection of the heater inlet hose (upper hose). Slide the clamp back along the hose away from the connection point. Twist the hose gently to break the seal, then pull it off the fitting. Have shop towels ready to catch residual coolant.

    Loosen the hose clamp at the firewall heater core pipe connection for the inlet hose. Twist and pull the hose to remove it from the heater core pipe. Allow any remaining coolant to drain into the pan.

    Loosen the hose clamp at the engine-side connection of the heater outlet hose (lower hose). This typically connects to the water pump or engine block. Slide the clamp back, twist the hose to break the seal, and remove it from the fitting.

    Remove outlet hose at firewall connection
    Loosen the hose clamp at the firewall heater core pipe connection for the outlet hose. Twist and remove the hose from the heater core pipe. Completely remove both old hoses from the vehicle.

    Clean connection surfaces
    Use a wire brush or razor blade to carefully clean any old rubber residue, corrosion, or debris from all four metal pipe/fitting surfaces (two engine-side, two firewall-side). Ensure surfaces are smooth and clean for proper seal with new hoses.

    Install new outlet hose
    Position new hose clamps on the new outlet hose (one at each end). Route the outlet hose following the same path as the original. Connect to the engine-side fitting first, ensuring the hose is fully seated over the barbed fitting. Connect the firewall end to the heater core pipe, ensuring full seating.

    Secure outlet hose clamps
    Position both hose clamps approximately 1/4 inch from the end of each hose connection. Tighten the clamps to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure clamps are positioned over the barbed section of each fitting.

    Install new inlet hose
    Position new hose clamps on the new inlet hose. Route the inlet hose following the original path, ensuring it does not contact any moving parts or sharp edges. Connect to the engine-side fitting first, then to the heater core pipe at the firewall, ensuring both ends are fully seated.

    Secure inlet hose clamps
    Position both hose clamps approximately 1/4 inch from the end of each hose connection. Tighten the clamps to specification using a torque wrench. Verify all four hose connections are secure and properly positioned.

    Close radiator drain and refill coolant
    Close and tighten the radiator drain plug to specification. Slowly fill the cooling system with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) through the radiator cap opening until coolant reaches the base of the filler neck. Also fill the coolant reservoir to the FULL line.

    Bleed cooling system
    Leave radiator cap off. Start the engine and allow it to idle with the heater set to maximum temperature and fan on high. Watch the coolant level in the radiator and add coolant as needed as air bleeds out of the system. Run until the engine reaches normal operating temperature and the upper radiator hose becomes hot.
    Stay clear of cooling fans which may engage automatically. Keep hands and tools away from fan blades and belts.

    Final coolant level adjustment
    With engine still running, verify hot air is blowing from heater vents. Top off radiator coolant to the base of the filler neck. Turn off engine and install radiator cap. Check coolant reservoir level and adjust to FULL line if necessary.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine splash shield if removed
  2. Verify all hose clamps are tight and properly positioned
  3. Wipe down all hose connections and surrounding areas to check for leaks

Verification

  • Inspect all four hose connections for coolant leaks with engine cold
  • Start engine and allow to reach operating temperature, monitoring for leaks
  • Verify hot air blows from heater vents at maximum temperature setting
