This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor on the 2012-2017 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Allow the engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burns from hot engine components.
ℹ️The MAP sensor is located on or near the intake manifold. Do not confuse it with the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor which is in the air intake tube.

Parts

  • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • MAP Sensor O-ring or seal (if separate) × 1 — Often included with sensor

Preparation

  1. Ensure the engine is cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Locate the MAP sensor on the intake manifold (typically on the firewall side of the engine)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen and remove the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts or setting diagnostic codes during the repair. Wait at least 3 minutes for capacitors to discharge.
  2. 2
    Access the MAP sensor
Remove any engine covers or plastic trim pieces if they obstruct access to the MAP sensor. The sensor is typically mounted directly to the intake manifold with a single screw or bolt. Note the sensor's orientation for proper reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the MAP sensor electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the sensor. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage.
  4. 4
    Remove MAP sensor mounting fastener
Using the appropriate socket, remove the screw or bolt securing the MAP sensor to the intake manifold. The sensor may be held by one or two fasteners depending on the specific mounting configuration.
    Torque spec
    MAP Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove MAP sensor from manifold
Gently twist and pull the MAP sensor straight out of the intake manifold. If the sensor is stuck, carefully wiggle it while pulling to break the seal. Inspect the O-ring or seal on the sensor port for damage or deterioration.
  6. 6
    Clean mounting surface
Use a clean shop towel to wipe away any dirt or debris from the MAP sensor port on the intake manifold. Do not allow any contamination to enter the manifold opening. Inspect the port for cracks or damage.
  7. 7
    Install new MAP sensor
Check that the new sensor has a fresh O-ring or seal installed. Align the sensor with the mounting hole and insert it straight into the manifold port. Ensure the sensor is fully seated and properly oriented to align mounting holes.
Do not force the sensor. It should slide in smoothly with gentle pressure. Forcing it may damage the sensor or manifold threads.
  8. 8
    Install and torque mounting fastener
Insert the mounting screw or bolt and hand-tighten first to ensure proper thread engagement. Using a torque wrench, tighten the fastener to the specified torque of 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft). Over-tightening can crack the sensor housing.
    Torque spec
    MAP Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the MAP sensor until you hear or feel a positive click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.
  10. 10
    Reinstall engine covers
Replace any engine covers or trim pieces that were removed for access. Ensure all clips and fasteners are properly secured.
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely with the 10mm socket. The vehicle may require a drive cycle to complete readiness monitors after sensor replacement.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify no tools or materials were left in the engine bay
  3. Double-check that all engine covers are properly reinstalled

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify it idles smoothly without rough running or stalling
  • Check that the Check Engine Light does not illuminate
  • Using an OBD-II scanner, verify no MAP sensor-related diagnostic codes are present (P0105-P0109)
  • Test drive the vehicle and confirm normal acceleration and performance
  • Monitor for proper boost/vacuum readings using a scan tool if available (typically 20-30 kPa at idle)
