Remove and replace the power steering pump pulley on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine using a pulley puller and installer tool.

Warnings

Allow engine to cool completely before starting work to avoid burns from hot components
Power steering fluid will spill when disconnecting lines. Have drain pan positioned and protect painted surfaces
ℹ️Do not use impact tools on pulley. The pulley and pump shaft can be damaged by improper installation or removal techniques

Parts

  • Power steering pump pulley × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Power steering pressure line O-ring × 1 — 90301-18003
  • Power steering return line O-ring × 1 — 90301-18003

Fluids

  • Toyota ATF Dexron III — 1 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool completely
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal
  4. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on clips
  5. Position drain pan under power steering pump area

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove serpentine belt
Use a 3/8" ratchet or serpentine belt tool in the tensioner square hole. Rotate tensioner counterclockwise to release tension and slip belt off power steering pump pulley. Release tensioner slowly and remove belt from engine.
  2. 2
    Disconnect power steering pressure line
Using a line wrench, loosen the pressure line fitting at the pump. Have drain pan ready to catch fluid. Once loose, unthread fitting completely and move line aside. Cap or plug line to minimize fluid loss.
  3. 3
    Disconnect power steering return line
Loosen clamp on return hose at the pump using pliers or screwdriver. Twist and pull return hose off pump inlet. Allow fluid to drain into pan. Plug or cap hose end to prevent further leakage.
  4. 4
    Remove pump mounting bolts
Remove the three 12mm pump mounting bolts while supporting the pump with your other hand. There are two bolts accessible from the front and one rear bolt accessed from below or side. Once bolts are removed, carefully maneuver pump out of engine bay enough to access pulley.
    Torque spec
    Pump Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove power steering pulley
Install the power steering pulley puller tool onto the pulley face. Thread the center shaft through the pulley and thread it into the pump shaft. Hold the center shaft stationary with a wrench and turn the puller body clockwise. This will pull the pulley straight off the pump shaft. Continue turning until pulley releases completely.
  6. 6
Inspect pump shaft and new pulley
Check pump shaft for damage, scoring, or debris. Clean shaft with clean rag if needed. Inspect keyway on shaft and inside new pulley to ensure they are clean and undamaged. Verify new pulley matches old pulley design and dimensions.
  7. 7
    Install new power steering pulley
Align the keyway inside the new pulley with the key on the pump shaft. Place pulley onto shaft and start it by hand to ensure proper alignment. Install the power steering pulley installer tool. Thread the installer shaft through the center and turn the installer to press the pulley onto the shaft. Press pulley until it is fully seated and flush with the end of the pump shaft. Do not over-press as this can damage the pump bearing.
  8. 8
    Reinstall power steering pump
Position pump back into mounting bracket. Start all three mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern to ensure even seating.
    Torque spec
    Pump Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect power steering lines
Install new O-rings on both pressure line fitting and return line connection, lightly lubricating O-rings with clean power steering fluid. Connect pressure line and tighten fitting to specification using line wrench. Slide return hose onto pump inlet and secure clamp.
    Torque spec
    Pressure Line Fitting34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reinstall serpentine belt
Route serpentine belt around all pulleys except power steering pump pulley according to belt routing diagram on radiator support. Rotate tensioner counterclockwise and slip belt onto power steering pump pulley last. Release tensioner slowly to apply tension. Verify belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.
  11. 11
Fill and bleed power steering system
Fill power steering reservoir to cold fill line with Toyota ATF Dexron III. Start engine and turn steering wheel slowly lock to lock 5-6 times while idling. Stop engine and check fluid level. Add fluid as needed to bring to proper level. Repeat process until no air bubbles appear in reservoir and fluid level stabilizes.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover by pressing down on mounting clips until they click
  2. Reconnect negative battery terminal
  3. Check for fluid leaks at all connection points

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no unusual noises from power steering pump
  • Check that power steering fluid level is at proper cold or hot mark depending on engine temperature
  • Turn steering wheel lock to lock and verify smooth operation with no binding or noise
  • Inspect all connections for leaks, particularly pressure line fitting
  • Test drive vehicle and verify normal power steering assist function
  • Recheck fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary
