Parts

  • Door speaker (6.5 inch front or 6x9 inch rear) × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
  • Plastic trim clips (if damaged) × 5 — 90467-09139 or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
  2. Roll down the window of the door being serviced slightly to provide access if door cannot be opened later
  3. Gather replacement speaker and verify correct size (6.5 inch for front doors, 6x9 inch for rear doors)
  4. Inspect trim panel clips and have replacements ready if originals are damaged

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove door pull handle cover
Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pry out the small cover panel behind the interior door pull handle. This cover conceals a screw. Work from the rear edge and pop it out gently.
  2. 2
    Remove door panel screws
Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw behind the door pull handle cover. If present, remove any additional screws at the bottom edge of the door panel and in the door pull handle cup.
  3. 3
    Remove door panel clips
Starting at the bottom rear corner of the door panel, use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully release the retaining clips around the perimeter. Work your way around the panel, applying steady outward pressure. There are typically 8-10 clips holding the panel.
  4. 4
    Lift and disconnect door panel
Once all clips are released, lift the door panel upward to disengage it from the window sill, then pull it away slightly. Disconnect any electrical connectors for power windows, locks, and mirror controls by pressing the release tabs. Set the door panel aside in a safe location.
  5. 5
    Remove moisture barrier (if necessary)
If the speaker is behind a plastic moisture barrier, carefully peel back only the section covering the speaker location. Do not fully remove the barrier unless necessary, as the adhesive may not reseal properly.
  6. 6
    Disconnect speaker wiring
Locate the speaker mounted in the door panel or door frame. Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the speaker by pressing the release tab and pulling straight out.
  7. 7
    Remove speaker mounting fasteners
Remove the speaker mounting screws (typically three or four Phillips screws). Note that some speakers may have integrated mounting clips instead of screws. If clips are present, squeeze or release them according to their design.
  8. 8
    Remove old speaker
Carefully extract the speaker from its mounting location in the door panel or door frame. Note the orientation and any spacers or adapter brackets that may be present.
  9. 9
    Install new speaker
Position the new speaker in the mounting location, ensuring correct orientation with the wiring connector accessible. If the new speaker requires an adapter bracket, install it according to manufacturer instructions. Insert and hand-tighten all mounting screws.
  10. 10
    Connect speaker wiring
Plug the electrical connector into the new speaker until it clicks into place. Ensure the connection is secure and the wiring is not pinched or stretched.
  11. 11
    Test speaker operation
Before reinstalling the door panel, turn the ignition to ACC or ON position and test the speaker by adjusting the balance and fade controls on the radio. Verify proper sound output and that no rattling or distortion occurs.
  12. 12
    Reinstall moisture barrier
If the moisture barrier was peeled back, press it firmly back into place ensuring a good seal to prevent water intrusion into the door cavity.
  13. 13
    Reinstall door panel
Reconnect all electrical connectors for power accessories. Position the door panel and hook the top edge over the window sill, then press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Reinstall all screws and replace the door pull handle cover.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim clips are properly seated and the door panel is flush with the door frame
  2. Verify that all electrical connectors for windows, locks, and mirrors are functioning properly
  3. Check that no rattles or loose panels exist when closing the door

Verification

  • Turn on the vehicle and play audio through all speakers
  • Use the balance and fade controls to isolate the replaced speaker and verify clear sound quality
  • Test speaker at various volume levels to ensure no distortion or rattling
  • Verify all door panel functions (window, locks, mirror controls) operate normally
  • Open and close the door several times to ensure the panel is secure and no clips are loose
