Preparation

    Disconnect battery
    Open hood and locate the battery. Using a 10mm wrench, loosen and remove the negative battery cable from the battery terminal. Secure the cable away from the battery post. Wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.

    From underneath the vehicle, locate the starter motor on the lower front side of the engine, between the engine and transmission bellhousing on the passenger side. You may need to work from both above (through engine bay) and below (under vehicle) for different connections.

    Remove engine under cover if equipped
    If your vehicle has a plastic under cover, remove the fasteners securing it to access the starter. Some fasteners may be push-type clips. Set cover and hardware aside.

    Disconnect starter electrical connections
    Locate the two electrical connections on the starter solenoid. First, remove the 12mm nut securing the large B+ battery cable to the solenoid terminal post and carefully pull the cable off. Then disconnect the smaller push-on connector from the S terminal by pulling it straight off. Keep hardware organized.
    Do not allow the B+ cable to contact any ground or metal surfaces, as it carries direct battery voltage even with negative disconnected

    Remove heat shield if present
    Some models have a heat shield bolted to the starter or nearby area. If present, remove the 10mm bolts securing the heat shield and set aside with hardware.

    Locate and access mounting bolts
    The starter is secured by two bolts through the bellhousing. Identify both bolt locations. The upper bolt is accessed from above in the engine bay, while the lower bolt may be accessed from below or through the wheel well opening. The long bolt typically requires a socket extension.

    Remove upper starter mounting bolt
    Using a 14mm or 17mm socket (depending on bolt head) with extension, remove the upper starter mounting bolt. This bolt threads into the transmission bellhousing. Keep bolt in a safe location.
    Support the starter with one hand as you remove this bolt to prevent it from dropping

    Remove lower starter mounting bolt
    Remove the lower mounting bolt using the same socket size. This bolt is typically longer and may require a longer extension to reach. Once both bolts are removed, the starter will be free from the bellhousing.

    Remove starter motor
    Carefully wiggle and pull the starter motor away from the bellhousing. The nose of the starter fits into a pilot hole in the bellhousing, so you may need to rotate it slightly while pulling. Lower the starter down and out from under the vehicle. Be prepared for the weight.

    Inspect mounting surface and prepare new starter
    Clean the mounting surface on the bellhousing with a wire brush if needed. Inspect the ring gear through the starter opening for any damaged teeth. Verify the new starter matches the old unit in mounting hole positions, electrical terminal configuration, and overall dimensions.

    Install new starter motor
    Guide the new starter into position, aligning the nose with the pilot hole in the bellhousing. Ensure the starter is fully seated against the bellhousing mounting surface. Rotate slightly if needed to achieve proper alignment.

    Install mounting bolts
    Thread both starter mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading. Start with the upper bolt, then the lower bolt. Once both are hand-tight, use a torque wrench to tighten both bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern.

    Reconnect electrical connections
    Reconnect the small S terminal connector by pushing it firmly onto the terminal until it clicks. Then place the B+ cable terminal onto the solenoid stud and install the 12mm nut, tightening to specification with a torque wrench.

    Reinstall heat shield and under cover
    If a heat shield was removed, reinstall it with the original bolts and torque to specification. Reinstall the engine under cover if applicable, ensuring all fasteners are properly secured.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reinstall the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and tighten the 10mm nut to specification. Ensure the connection is clean and tight. The vehicle is now ready for testing.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall wheel if removed and torque lug nuts to specification (110 Nm / 80 lb-ft)
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Double-check all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
  4. Verify no tools or parts were left in engine bay or under vehicle

Verification

  • Turn ignition key to START position and verify engine cranks smoothly and starts
  • Listen for unusual noises from the starter during cranking (grinding, clicking, whirring)
  • Verify starter disengages immediately when key is released to RUN position
  • Check that all warning lights on instrument cluster function normally after start
  • Test start the vehicle 3-4 times with engine cold and warm to ensure consistent operation
  • Inspect under vehicle for any fluid leaks or loose components after test starts
