This procedure replaces the timing chain, guides, tensioner, and related components on the 2AR-FE 2.5L engine, ensuring proper valve timing and preventing catastrophic engine failure from chain stretch or component wear.

Warnings

⚠️Improper timing chain installation will cause catastrophic engine damage. Verify all timing marks multiple times before cranking engine.
⚠️Support engine from above before removing motor mount. Engine falling can cause severe injury.
Do not rotate crankshaft or camshafts independently once timing chain is removed or valve-to-piston contact may occur.
Crankshaft pulley bolt is extremely tight (180 Nm). Use proper holding tool to prevent engine rotation.
ℹ️Work only on cold engine. Drain coolant and oil to minimize spillage when removing timing cover.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove valve cover
Disconnect ignition coils and PCV hoses. Remove all valve cover bolts in reverse sequence (outside to inside). Lift valve cover carefully to avoid damaging gasket surface. Inspect camshaft lobes and journals for wear.
  2. 2
    Remove crankshaft pulley
Install crankshaft holding tool to prevent rotation. Use breaker bar or impact wrench to remove crankshaft pulley bolt (clockwise rotation to loosen). Remove pulley from crankshaft snout. This bolt is typically single-use TTY type - verify service manual specification.
Do not use starter motor to hold crankshaft - use only proper holding tool to prevent flywheel damage.
  3. 3
    Remove timing cover
Remove all timing cover bolts noting different lengths and sizes (6mm, 8mm, 10mm). There are approximately 20+ bolts of various sizes. Carefully pry timing cover away from block using plastic pry tool at designated pry points. Do not damage sealing surfaces. Remove old gasket material and RTV completely with gasket scraper.
Metal pry tools may gouge aluminum sealing surfaces. Use plastic tools only.
  4. 4
    Verify and mark timing positions
Rotate crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) cylinder #1. Verify timing marks: camshaft sprocket marks align with cylinder head deck surface, crankshaft timing mark aligns with mark on oil pump body. Use paint marker to mark all sprocket positions relative to chain before removal. Photograph timing mark alignment for reference.
⚠️Accurate timing mark documentation is critical. Take multiple photos from different angles.
  5. 5
    Remove timing chain tensioner
Remove tensioner mounting bolt and carefully extract tensioner assembly. Tensioner is spring-loaded. Inspect tensioner plunger for smooth operation and replace if worn or sticky. Compress new tensioner plunger and insert retaining pin or 3mm Allen key to lock in compressed position for installation.
  6. 6
    Remove timing chain guides
Remove upper timing chain guide bolts and remove guide. Remove lower timing chain guide bolts and extract lower guide. Inspect guides for wear grooves, cracks, or missing material. Replace if wear depth exceeds 1mm or any damage visible.
ℹ️Guides with deep wear grooves indicate chain was already stretched - verify all components in kit are replaced.
  7. 7
Remove camshaft sprockets and VVT phasers
Hold camshaft with wrench on hex section (do not use chain or sprocket to hold). Remove intake camshaft sprocket bolt and remove sprocket. Remove exhaust camshaft VVT-i phaser bolt (noting that threadlocker was applied) and remove phaser assembly. Keep sprockets and phasers organized for correct reinstallation position.
    Torque spec
    Camshaft sprocket bolt75 Nm (55 lb-ft)
  8. 8
Remove timing chain and crankshaft sprocket
Lift timing chain off crankshaft sprocket and remove chain from engine. Remove crankshaft timing sprocket from crankshaft (may require gentle prying). Remove timing chain idler sprocket if part of replacement kit. Inspect crankshaft sprocket teeth for wear or damage.
  9. 9
    Replace crankshaft front seal
Carefully pry out old crankshaft front seal from timing cover using seal puller. Clean seal bore thoroughly. Install new seal using seal driver or large socket, driving evenly until flush with cover surface. Lubricate seal lip with clean engine oil.
  10. 10
    Install new timing chain components
Install new crankshaft sprocket onto crankshaft (alignment key in keyway). Install new timing chain idler sprocket if included in kit and torque bolt. Install new lower timing chain guide with bolts hand-tight. Install new upper timing chain guide with bolts hand-tight. Route new timing chain around crankshaft sprocket ensuring proper engagement.
  11. 11
Install camshaft sprockets with timing alignment
Verify crankshaft is still at TDC mark. Install exhaust camshaft VVT-i phaser onto camshaft, aligning timing marks per manufacturer specification. Apply medium-strength threadlocker to phaser bolt. Hold camshaft with wrench and torque phaser bolt. Install intake camshaft sprocket, aligning timing marks. Route chain over sprocket and torque bolt while holding camshaft.
⚠️Verify all timing marks align exactly per service manual diagrams before torquing any bolts.
    Torque spec
    Camshaft sprocket bolt75 Nm (55 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Install timing chain tensioner
Torque all guide bolts to specification. Ensure new tensioner is compressed with pin installed. Install tensioner and torque mounting bolt. Carefully remove tensioner retaining pin, allowing tensioner to apply pressure to chain. Verify chain has correct tension and no slack is present.
Do not remove tensioner pin until all components are installed and bolted. Premature release may cause chain misalignment.
  13. 13
    Verify timing alignment
Manually rotate crankshaft two complete revolutions clockwise (normal rotation). Verify all timing marks realign exactly at TDC position. Check that chain tension is consistent and no binding occurs during rotation. If marks do not align, disassemble and repeat timing installation procedure.
⚠️If timing marks do not align after two revolutions, do not proceed. Disassemble and verify correct installation.
  14. 14
Install timing cover with new gasket
Clean all timing cover and block sealing surfaces with gasket scraper and solvent. Install new timing cover gasket. Apply thin bead of RTV silicone to areas specified in service manual (typically where cover meets oil pan). Install timing cover and all bolts hand-tight. Tighten bolts in sequence from center outward: 6mm bolts first, then 8mm bolts, finally 10mm bolts to their respective torque specifications.
ℹ️RTV must cure per manufacturer specification before adding oil. Typically 1 hour minimum before filling, 24 hours before full operation.
  15. 15
Install crankshaft pulley and valve cover
Install crankshaft pulley onto crankshaft snout ensuring proper alignment. Install new crankshaft pulley bolt (if TTY type) and torque to specification using holding tool. Install new valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals. Position valve cover and install bolts in sequence from center outward, torquing to specification. Reconnect ignition coils and PCV system.
