Preparation

  1. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes with OBD-II scanner and record them for reference
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  4. Raise and support front of vehicle on jack stands at proper lift points
  5. Allow transmission to cool if vehicle was recently driven

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate the input speed sensor
    From underneath the vehicle, locate the input speed sensor on the driver's side of the transmission case, near the front. It will have a single electrical connector and is secured by one 10mm bolt. The sensor is positioned vertically with the connector facing outward.

    Disconnect electrical connector
    Press the release tab on the electrical connector and pull it straight off the sensor. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Clean if necessary with electrical contact cleaner.

    Position drain pan
    Place a drain pan underneath the sensor location. Expect approximately 4-8 ounces of transmission fluid to drain when the sensor is removed.

    Remove sensor bolt
    Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the input speed sensor to the transmission case. Keep the bolt for reinstallation.

    Remove old sensor
    Carefully pull the sensor straight out of the transmission case. Do not twist or rock the sensor as this may damage the bore. Allow any remaining fluid to drain into the pan. Remove and discard the old O-ring from the sensor bore.

    Clean sensor bore
    Use a clean shop towel to wipe the sensor bore in the transmission case. Ensure no debris or old O-ring material remains. Inspect the bore for damage or scoring.

    Install new O-ring
    Lubricate the new O-ring with clean Toyota WS ATF and install it onto the new sensor. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated in its groove and not twisted.

    Install new sensor
    Carefully insert the new sensor straight into the transmission case bore. Push firmly until it is fully seated against the transmission case. Do not cross-thread or force the sensor.

    Install and torque sensor bolt
    Thread the sensor bolt in by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Using a torque wrench, tighten the sensor bolt to specification.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Push the electrical connector onto the new sensor until it clicks securely into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked.

    Check and add transmission fluid
    Lower the vehicle to level ground. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. With the engine running and transmission in Park, check the transmission fluid level per the owner's manual procedure. Add Toyota WS ATF as needed to replace fluid lost during sensor replacement.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure sensor bolt is torqued to specification and electrical connector is fully seated
  2. Verify no transmission fluid leaks around the sensor after starting engine
  3. Top off transmission fluid to proper level on dipstick or through level check procedure

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no transmission fluid leaks at sensor location
  • Test drive vehicle through all gears to ensure proper shifting
  • Use OBD-II scanner to verify speed sensor is reporting data and no codes are present
  • Verify speedometer displays correct vehicle speed during test drive
  • Recheck transmission fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary
