Complete major tune-up service including spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, engine oil change, and inspection of ignition system components for the 2012-2017 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Engine must be cool before starting work. Hot engine components can cause severe burns.
Disconnect negative battery terminal before working on ignition system to prevent accidental shock or system damage.
Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for vehicle weight.
ℹ️Keep work area clean to prevent debris from entering engine during air filter and spark plug replacement.

Parts

  • Spark plugs × 4 — Denso SK20R11 or Toyota OEM equivalent
  • Engine air filter × 1 — Toyota 17801-0H050 or equivalent
  • Cabin air filter × 1 — Toyota 87139-06050 or equivalent
  • Engine oil filter × 1 — Toyota 04152-YZZA6 or equivalent
  • Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — Toyota 90430-12031

Fluids

  • Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil — 5 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Raise front of vehicle with jack and secure on jack stands
  4. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on perimeter clips
  5. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes before proceeding

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain engine oil
Position drain pan under oil drain plug located on passenger side of oil pan. Remove drain plug with 14mm socket and allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and sealing surface for damage. Clean drain plug and install new crush washer.

  2. 2
    Replace oil filter
Locate oil filter on front of engine block below exhaust manifold. Use oil filter wrench to remove old filter (expect residual oil spillage). Clean filter mounting surface with shop rag. Apply thin film of new oil to rubber gasket of new filter. Install new filter hand-tight, then turn an additional 3/4 turn.
  3. 3
    Remove ignition coils
Locate four ignition coils on top of engine. Disconnect electrical connector from each coil by pressing tab and pulling straight up. Remove single 10mm bolt securing each coil. Pull coils straight up with slight twisting motion to extract from spark plug wells. Inspect coil boots for cracks or oil contamination.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  4. 4
Remove and inspect old spark plugs
Use 14mm spark plug socket with extension to remove all four spark plugs. Turn counterclockwise with steady pressure. Inspect plugs for wear patterns, electrode gap, and deposits. Check spark plug wells for oil or coolant contamination which would indicate gasket failure requiring separate repair.
  5. 5
    Install new spark plugs
Verify new spark plugs are pre-gapped to 0.043 inches (1.1mm) specification. Install spark plugs by hand into each cylinder to avoid cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use spark plug socket to tighten an additional 1/16 turn (approximately 15 degrees) from seated position. Do not overtighten as this engine uses aluminum head.
  6. 6
    Reinstall ignition coils
Apply small amount of dielectric grease to inside of coil boots if available. Align coils with spark plugs and press firmly until fully seated. Install 10mm mounting bolts and torque to specification. Reconnect electrical connectors to each coil until they click into place.

  7. 7
    Replace engine air filter
Locate air filter housing on passenger side of engine bay. Release clips on both sides of air box cover. Lift cover and remove old air filter element. Clean inside of air box with damp cloth to remove debris. Install new filter ensuring proper orientation with ribbed side facing down. Secure air box cover and engage clips fully.
    Torque spec
    Air Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Replace cabin air filter
Open glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stops and lower fully. Remove cabin filter cover by pressing tabs. Slide old filter out noting airflow direction arrow. Install new filter matching airflow direction arrow (typically toward rear of vehicle). Reinstall cover and glove box stops.
  9. 9
    Fill engine with oil
Lower vehicle from jack stands. Locate oil filler cap on top of engine (front center). Remove cap and insert funnel. Pour 4.5 quarts of 0W-20 oil initially. Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle, then check dipstick. Add remaining oil in small increments until level reaches full mark between two dots on dipstick. Do not overfill.
Overfilling engine oil can cause catalytic converter damage and increased oil consumption.
  10. 10
    Reconnect battery and start engine
Reconnect negative battery terminal. Start engine and verify it runs smoothly without misfires or unusual noises. Check oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 3 seconds. Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes while monitoring for oil leaks around drain plug and filter. Check under vehicle for drips.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning clips and pressing down until secured
  2. Reset maintenance reminder system through vehicle information display if equipped
  3. Record mileage and date of service for maintenance records

Verification

  • Check engine oil level on dipstick with engine off - should be at full mark
  • Verify no oil leaks present under vehicle after 5 minute idle period
  • Confirm engine runs smoothly at idle with no misfires or rough running
  • Test drive vehicle for 10 minutes and verify smooth acceleration with no hesitation
  • Recheck oil level after test drive and top off if necessary
  • Verify no check engine light or malfunction indicators illuminated
