This procedure covers removal and replacement of the turn signal/multifunction switch assembly on the steering column of a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry with 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 90 seconds minimum before working near airbag components to prevent accidental deployment
Do not rotate steering wheel with switch disconnected as this may damage the clock spring
ℹ️Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key before beginning work

Tools required

Flat blade screwdriver (trim removal)Essential
10mm socket and ratchetEssential
Torque wrench (1-10 Nm range)Essential
Trim panel removal tool set
Flashlight or work light
Masking tape (for marking connector orientation)

Parts

  • Turn signal/multifunction switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition OFF and remove key from ignition
  3. Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 90 seconds for airbag system to discharge
  5. Ensure steering wheel is unlocked and in straight position

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column cover
Locate the two Phillips screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover. Remove both screws. Gently pull the lower cover downward and away from the column, releasing the retaining clips. Set cover and screws aside.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
With lower cover removed, locate the upper cover retention screws (typically 2-3 screws accessible from underneath). Remove these screws. Carefully lift and separate the upper cover from the steering column, working around the ignition cylinder. Note the position of any clips for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Access turn signal switch
With both covers removed, you will now have clear access to the turn signal switch assembly mounted on the left side of the steering column. Identify the electrical connector(s) attached to the switch - there may be one or two connectors depending on options (cruise control, wiper controls).
ℹ️Take a photo of connector orientation before disconnecting for reference during reassembly
  4. 4
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate the locking tab on each electrical connector. Press or lift the locking tab while gently pulling the connector straight away from the switch. Do not pull on wires. If connector is tight, use a small flat blade screwdriver to carefully release the lock while pulling. Mark connector orientation with tape if multiple connectors present.
Do not force connectors - ensure locking tabs are fully released before pulling
  5. 5
    Remove switch mounting screws
Locate the two mounting screws securing the turn signal switch to the steering column bracket (typically on top and bottom of switch housing). Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove both mounting screws completely. Keep screws in a safe location for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove turn signal switch assembly
With mounting screws removed and connectors disconnected, grasp the switch assembly firmly and pull it straight away from the steering column. The switch may have a locating pin or tab - gently wiggle if needed to release. Remove the old switch completely from the vehicle.
ℹ️Inspect the mounting bracket and column for any damage or debris before installing new switch
  7. 7
    Install new turn signal switch
Position the new turn signal switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning any locating pins or tabs with the corresponding holes in the column bracket. Ensure the switch sits flush against the mounting surface before proceeding.
ℹ️Verify switch lever returns to center position smoothly before securing with screws
  8. 8
    Install switch mounting screws
Insert both mounting screws into the switch housing and thread them by hand to prevent cross-threading. Once both screws are started, use a torque wrench to tighten each screw to 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft) in a cross pattern. Do not overtighten as this may crack the plastic housing.
Use proper torque specification - overtightening will damage plastic switch housing

    Switch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Align each electrical connector with its corresponding socket on the switch, ensuring correct orientation (refer to photos taken during disassembly). Push connector firmly until you hear/feel the locking tab engage. Gently tug on connector to verify it is securely locked in place.
ℹ️Ensure no wires are pinched between switch and column before finalizing connections
  10. 10
    Test switch operation before reassembly
Reconnect the negative battery cable temporarily. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Test all turn signal switch functions: left turn, right turn, hazard lights, high beams, and lane change function. Verify all functions operate correctly before proceeding with cover reinstallation.
ℹ️If any function does not work, disconnect battery and verify all connections are properly seated
  11. 11
    Reinstall upper steering column cover
Position the upper steering column cover over the column, carefully working it around the ignition cylinder and ensuring it sits flush. Align all clips and mounting points. Install the retention screws hand-tight first, then torque to 2.0 Nm (1.5 lb-ft).
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall lower steering column cover
Align the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column assembly. Press firmly to engage all retaining clips until you hear them click into place. Install the two Phillips screws and torque to 2.0 Nm (1.5 lb-ft). Verify both covers are secure with no gaps.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify steering column covers are properly aligned with no gaps or rattles
  3. Confirm negative battery cable is reconnected securely
  4. Do not rotate steering wheel excessively during or after installation

Verification

  • With ignition ON (engine off), verify left turn signal operates and dash indicator flashes
  • Verify right turn signal operates and dash indicator flashes
  • Test hazard light function - all four corners should flash
  • Test high beam operation and indicator light on dash
  • Test lane change function (partial lever movement) in both directions
  • If equipped, verify cruise control resume/set functions operate from switch
  • Start engine and retest all functions with engine running
  • Check for any error codes or warning lights on instrument cluster
  • Verify no rattles or loose components in steering column area
