Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure covers removal and replacement of the valve cover gasket on the 2AR-FE 2.5L I4 engine to resolve oil leaks from the valve cover mating surface.

Warnings

Allow engine to cool completely before starting work to prevent burns from hot components
Do not use metal scrapers on aluminum valve cover or head mating surfaces as scratches will cause leaks
ℹ️The valve cover bolt tightening sequence is critical - tighten center bolts first, then work outward

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool for at least 2 hours if recently operated
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent accidental ignition system activation
  4. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on front edge, then lifting off the rear mounting grommets

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove ignition coils
Disconnect the electrical connector from each ignition coil by pressing the release tab and pulling upward. Remove the single 10mm bolt securing each coil. Carefully pull each coil straight up and out of the spark plug tube. Keep coils in order if reusing (cylinder 1 is timing belt end).
  2. 2
    Remove spark plugs
Using a 16mm spark plug socket with extension, remove all four spark plugs. This prevents debris from falling into cylinders during gasket replacement and allows engine to rotate freely if needed. Inspect plugs for wear and gap.
  3. 3
Disconnect PCV hose and breather hose
Locate the PCV hose connected to the rear left side of the valve cover and disconnect it by squeezing the collar and pulling. Disconnect the breather hose from the front right side of the valve cover in the same manner. Move hoses aside.
ℹ️Mark hose positions if necessary to ensure correct reconnection
  4. 4
    Remove wiring harness clips
Remove any wiring harness clips or brackets attached to the valve cover studs. Typically there are 2-3 clips that slide onto the valve cover bolts. Carefully move the harness aside to provide clearance for valve cover removal.
  5. 5
    Remove valve cover bolts
Remove all valve cover bolts (typically 14 bolts) in reverse sequence, starting from outer bolts and working inward. Use a 10mm socket. Note that bolts may be different lengths - keep track of which position each came from. Remove any grommets or washers from the bolts.

  6. 6
    Remove valve cover
Carefully lift the valve cover straight up. If stuck, gently tap with a rubber mallet or use a plastic pry tool at the designated pry points (never between mating surfaces). Once loose, lift the cover clear of the engine and set aside on a clean surface.
Do not pry between valve cover and cylinder head mating surfaces - this will damage sealing surfaces
  7. 7
Remove old spark plug tube seals
The spark plug tube seals are pressed into the valve cover. Carefully pry them out using a flathead screwdriver or hook tool. Inspect the spark plug tubes in the cylinder head for any oil accumulation and clean if necessary.
    Torque spec
    Spark Plug Tube Seals12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Clean all mating surfaces
Using a plastic scraper, carefully remove all old gasket material from both the valve cover and cylinder head mating surfaces. Clean surfaces thoroughly with brake cleaner and lint-free rags. Ensure no debris falls into the engine. All surfaces must be completely clean and dry for proper seal.
Cover open spark plug holes with clean rags to prevent debris from entering cylinders
  9. 9
Install new spark plug tube seals
Press new spark plug tube seals into the valve cover by hand until fully seated. Ensure they are oriented correctly (lip facing down toward cylinder head). The seals should sit flush with the valve cover mounting surface. Light lubrication with engine oil can help installation.
    Torque spec
    Spark Plug Tube Seals12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Install new valve cover gasket
Place the new gasket into the groove on the valve cover. Ensure the gasket is fully seated in the groove around the entire perimeter and all bolt holes align properly. Install new rubber grommets onto the valve cover bolts.
ℹ️Do not use any silicone or gasket sealer - the gasket is designed to seal dry
  11. 11
    Install valve cover
Carefully position the valve cover onto the cylinder head, aligning all bolt holes and ensuring the gasket stays in position. Start all bolts by hand to ensure proper threading. Using a torque wrench, tighten bolts in sequence starting from the center and working outward in a crisscross pattern to 10 Nm (7 lb-ft).
Do not overtighten valve cover bolts - aluminum threads strip easily and gasket may be damaged

  12. 12
    Reinstall spark plugs
Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the spark plug threads (avoid getting any on the electrodes). Thread each spark plug by hand first to prevent cross-threading, then torque to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) using a torque wrench.
Always hand-start spark plugs to avoid cross-threading in aluminum head
  13. 13
    Reinstall ignition coils
Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of each coil boot. Install each coil into its correct cylinder position, pressing down firmly until fully seated. Install the 10mm retaining bolt and torque to 8 Nm (6 lb-ft). Reconnect all electrical connectors until they click.
  14. 14
    Reconnect hoses and harnesses
Reconnect the PCV hose and breather hose to their respective ports on the valve cover, ensuring they click into place. Reinstall all wiring harness clips and brackets to the valve cover studs. Reconnect negative battery terminal.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning rear grommets first, then pressing down firmly on front clips
  2. Double-check all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
  3. Verify all tools and rags have been removed from engine bay

Verification

  • Start engine and allow to idle for 5 minutes while inspecting valve cover perimeter for any oil leaks
  • Check for proper engine operation with no misfires or rough idle
  • After initial test run, allow engine to cool and re-check valve cover bolt torque
  • Drive vehicle normally and inspect valve cover area after 50-100 miles for any seepage
