Preparation

Procedure
- 1Drain engine coolantOpen the radiator drain plug at the bottom of the radiator (driver's side) and allow coolant to drain completely into the drain pan. Remove the radiator cap slowly to allow air in and speed drainage. Also remove the engine block drain plug located on the driver's side of the engine block if additional drainage is needed.
- 2Remove right engine mount and support engineSupport the engine using an engine jack positioned under the oil pan with a block of wood for protection. Remove the right-side engine mount bolts and raise the engine slightly (approximately 1-2 inches) to gain clearance for water pump access. Do not over-lift or strain attached components.
- 3Remove accessory drive beltRotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise using a 14mm socket on the tensioner bolt to release tension. Slip the belt off the pulleys and remove from the engine bay. Inspect the belt for wear and replace if showing cracks or glazing.
- 4Disconnect coolant hoses from water pumpUsing pliers, release the hose clamps on the coolant inlet and bypass hoses connected to the water pump. - 5Remove water pump mounting boltsLocate all water pump mounting bolts (typically 5 bolts on this engine). Remove the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to prevent warping the pump housing. - 6Remove water pump from engineCarefully pull the water pump assembly away from the engine block. It may require light tapping with a rubber mallet if the gasket has sealed tightly. Avoid prying against the engine block to prevent damage to sealing surfaces. Remove and discard the old gasket or O-ring.
- 7Clean mating surfacesUse a plastic scraper to remove all traces of the old gasket material from both the engine block and water pump mounting surface. Clean thoroughly with lint-free rags and solvent. Inspect the mating surface for any damage, deep scratches, or corrosion that could prevent proper sealing. The surface must be completely clean and dry.
- 8Install new water pumpInstall the new gasket or O-ring onto the water pump (verify orientation per manufacturer instructions). Align the water pump to the engine block, ensuring the gasket stays in position. Insert all mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. - 9Reconnect coolant hosesSlide the coolant inlet and bypass hoses onto the water pump fittings. Ensure hoses are fully seated on the fittings. - 10Reinstall accessory drive beltRoute the drive belt around all pulleys according to the belt routing diagram (typically shown on a decal under the hood). Rotate the tensioner clockwise and slip the belt onto the final pulley. Release the tensioner slowly and verify the belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.
- 11Reinstall engine mount and lower engineLower the engine back to its normal position carefully. Reinstall the right-side engine mount bolts and tighten to factory specifications. Remove the engine support jack.
- 12Refill cooling systemInstall a new drain plug gasket and close the radiator drain plug. Fill the cooling system slowly with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) mixed to a 50/50 ratio with distilled water. Fill through the radiator cap opening until coolant reaches the base of the filler neck. Start the engine with the radiator cap off and allow it to reach operating temperature while monitoring coolant level. Add coolant as the level drops during the bleeding process. Run the heater on high to help purge air from the system.
- 13Bleed cooling system and check for leaksWith the engine at operating temperature, squeeze the upper radiator hose several times to help purge air pockets. Continue adding coolant as needed until the level stabilizes and no more air bubbles emerge. Once the thermostat opens and coolant circulates (upper radiator hose becomes hot), top off the coolant level. Install the radiator cap and check the coolant reservoir level, filling to the FULL mark. Inspect all connections around the water pump for any signs of coolant leakage while the engine is running.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the engine cover by aligning clips and pressing down firmly until seated
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely
- Verify all tools and parts have been removed from the engine bay
- Double-check that all hose clamps are tight and positioned correctly
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to reach full operating temperature while monitoring for leaks around the water pump
- Check that the heater produces hot air, indicating proper coolant circulation
- Verify the coolant level is at the FULL mark on the reservoir when the engine is cold
- Inspect the area beneath the vehicle for any coolant drips after a test drive
- Monitor coolant level over the next few days and top off if necessary as residual air bleeds out
