Parts
- Tail light assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Trunk liner clips (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn off all lights and remove key from ignition
- Open trunk and ensure adequate working space around the tail light area
- Allow bulbs to cool if vehicle was recently operated
Procedure
- 1Access trunk interior panelFrom inside the trunk, locate the interior trim panel directly behind the tail light assembly on the affected side. This is a carpeted or felt panel covering the rear quarter panel.
- 2Remove trunk liner fastenersPull back or remove the trunk liner panel to expose the back of the tail light assembly. On most models, this involves pulling back the edge of the liner or removing 1-2 plastic push clips. Use a trim removal tool if needed to avoid damaging clips.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the back of the tail light assembly. Press the release tab on the connector and pull straight back to disconnect it from the tail light socket. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
- 4Remove tail light mounting hardwareLocate the three 10mm nuts securing the tail light assembly from inside the trunk. These are typically arranged in a triangular pattern. Remove all three nuts completely and retain them for reinstallation.Torque specTail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 5Remove tail light assemblyFrom outside the vehicle, gently pull the tail light assembly straight back away from the vehicle body. The assembly is located by pins that fit into rubber grommets. Apply steady, even pressure and wiggle slightly if needed to release the assembly. Do not pry against the paint.
- 6Inspect mounting points and sealsCheck the three mounting studs on the new tail light assembly and the corresponding grommets on the vehicle body for damage or debris. Inspect the seal around the perimeter of the tail light mounting area and clean if necessary to ensure proper weatherproofing.
- 7Install new tail light assemblyAlign the new tail light assembly with the mounting holes on the vehicle body. Ensure the alignment pins engage properly with the grommets. Press firmly but evenly to seat the assembly completely flush against the body panel. The seal should compress evenly around the perimeter.
- 8Secure tail light assemblyFrom inside the trunk, thread the three 10mm nuts onto the mounting studs by hand. Tighten in a star pattern (alternating between nuts) to ensure even seating. Final torque all three nuts to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specTail Light Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorPlug the electrical connector firmly into the tail light assembly socket until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked in place.
- 10Reinstall trunk linerReposition the trunk interior liner panel and secure any clips or fasteners that were removed. Ensure the liner sits flush and does not interfere with the tail light assembly or wiring harness.
Reassembly
- Ensure all three mounting nuts are torqued to specification and assembly is seated flush with body panel
- Verify electrical connector is fully locked and secured
- Check that trunk liner does not put pressure on wiring or tail light assembly
Verification
- Turn on headlights and verify all tail light functions operate correctly (running lights, brake lights, turn signals)
- Have an assistant verify brake lights illuminate when pedal is pressed
- Check turn signals on affected side for proper flash rate
- Visually inspect tail light assembly from outside vehicle to confirm proper fitment with even gaps around perimeter
- Verify no light leaks around seal and assembly is weathertight
- Close trunk and verify proper clearance with no interference
